      As an HVAC tech, I have cleaned this very type of unit (RUUD) many times and I can tell you that he just didn't do enough. Between the outside of the coil and the coil cover holds a lot of debris and needs to be removed to properly clean that out..also a little pink (acid) coil cleaner (obtainable from HVAC parts stores, or online) works much better than that canned crap you get at Lowe's. The acid doesn't need to be strong but does need to be rinsed throughly.

    • @DH18591

      @@mitchross8614 This cleaning is more than sufficiant considering most home owners doesn't even clean their unit, or at most just hose them down from the outside once in a blue moon. He for sure did enough, you can spend 30 more min and do it to a 100%, but this was 98% clean, as an Hvac tech, you should know that those last percent wouldn't do much if anything for head pressure, i can bet on it.

      @@DH18591 I've seen differently. The average can cleaner (and most commercial strength) does a poor job at lifting dirt from deep in the coils. The area in which I live has cottonwood that settles deep into the fins and an average cleaning like this would never suffice; the coil would "look" clean but too much junk still present in those fins. I have seen it a lot in my 20 years of service. He does fine but as an actual professional I differ in this definition of a "professional cleaning". I have had to spend several hours cleaning coils that were already cleaned; dismantling over-engineered frames and panels that trap dirt like these RUUD condensers or those darn Trane RTUs with double stacked coils and many more models. He (and you) [no disrespect intended] can clean however you deem sufficient. I just see it differently.

    HVAC Service Tech here, this is great to do once every couple years or so, but DO NOT do this too frequently. If there is no material,(Dirt, lint, debris, etc.) for the coil cleaner to remove, it will start to strip the aluminum fins. It WILL cause the fins to degrade significantly faster if done too often. Otherwise, fantastic video!

    That coil cleaner is normally available at Home Depot and is designed for evaporators but I like to use it for condenser coils too. You have to rinse the cleaner off of the condenser coil because condensation does not form on the outside coil during the cooling cycle whereas the evaporator coil will condense water out of the air and self rinse the cleaner off of the indoor coil.

    This is an outstanding video. Our company has cleaned tens of thousands of commercial coils in 16 years, maybe even 100k. We specialize in nothing but filters and coils. This video is spot on.
    I'd add that we have tested different coil cleaners on fins at the microscopic level. The coil cleaner you used in this video uses butyl and sodium metasilicate. Those substances are a "safe" combination and work moderately well.
    However, many over the counter coil cleaners your viewers might pick up have "sodium hydroxide". While SH is a good tool to have to clean evaporator coils that have buildup of cigarette smoke or kitchen grease, it is rare that such a caustic mix is needed to clean a condenser coil.
    Sodium Hydroxide at coil cleaning spray levels actually burn small streaks in the aluminum fins that can only be seen with a microscope. These streaks, studied after a year of operation, show that dirt collects within the streaks, further limiting the ability for the coil to extract heat.
    So check the ingredients and I would not use a spray coil cleaner with SH on a condenser.
    Dawn detergent (and almost any soap) usually has light levels of SH (this was formerly called "lye" and has been used to make soap for centuries). On condensers, Dawn will usually lift up most contaminants without harming the fins.
    The best way to clean condensers is to clean them at least once per year with nothing but water, and enough pressure to go through the coil starting the first year the unit is installed. This ensures that there is no microscopic scoring of the fins that reduce its capacity.
    Lastly, contrary to popular belief, fins can be cleaned with pressure. We use equipment as high as 4000 psi in some cases, but that is with trained technicians.
    For most homeowners, a garden hose, used exactly the way you used it in this video, is sufficient.
    This is a great video and thank you for making it.

      @@LifeisGood863 oh. I see your point now. We live in south Texas and we usually set our AC at 74 in winter because the high is still in the 70s and lows in the 40s. But in the summer we usually do it around 70 because it’s usually around highs in the 110s and lows in the 90s but last summer the indoor unit furnace thing went out so we had to replace the 40 year old thing and this year the outside one started to go out in the winter due to a Freon leak in the outside condenser thing but since it would be like 3k to replace it my parents were like meh and waited for it to go out completely so the home warranty company could fix it so now we are without an ac in the summer again trying to replace a really old unit in the dead of summer through a home warranty company that doesn’t give a crap about us and is takin for for ever all because they didn’t want to at least save a few hundred a month for this to be able to just outright replace it ( believe me I know they have the money to replace it judging on the frivolous things they buy and their income ) instead they decide to plan a trip to Alaska. I’m just so annoyed with this because my ceiling fad don’t even work right and it’s like 85 in the house and all this is because they can’t get their priorities straight. Like it should be simple to not go spend 500 on clothes and bath and bodyworks this weekend when you already have soap and clothes that can work and instead you should save for the AC unit and I’m only 17 and have 1 more year of high school so even though I can technically move out in the falls When I turn 18 it’s not smart to do so in my case. It make sense and good idea to check all connections, wirings, insulation coverings, and capacitor while doing this since you already have removed the cover.
    Stack up on capacitors, they are cheap online and easy to replace. You don’t want your system down in hot summer waiting for delivery, or cough out hundreds of dollars for a technician. Most havac stores won’t sell you parts without an hvac license or certification. You’re better off ordering online. Get USA made quality capacitors, not those cheap chinese knockoff. (Be careful and research videos on how to properly replace capacitor)
    Also, using those foaming chemicals is just a waste of money, hosing it thoroughly does the job without it. Those foaming chemicals are intended for attic or indoor use without rinsing.
    I’ve been doing these HVAC services for more than two decades.

    If your unit’s guards aren’t so tight as this one, in order words, if the fins are more easily visible from the outside, you can avoid taking the fan out. I just use a propane torch to burn off cottonwood, dirt and lint. Sweep the flame around quickly and without ever stopping in one spot. It’ll disintegrate all the filth on your coil. Then spray with very mild pressure from the hose from the outside in, the water should go freely through most coils. Do it once per month during the hot season. If you keep the routine, you’ll never need to spray any chemical or spray from the inside of the coil out. If the unit is very dirty, do it like it shows here. Great video.

  • @Jessev7742
    @Jessev7742 3 роки тому +8

    I would spray up and down going with the fins of the coil, some units are flimsy and the fins can bend easily if you’re spraying side to side. Simple green can do the job just as good as well

    • @xex2kok
      @xex2kok 2 роки тому

      Be careful using simple green depending on your coil material, most are aluminum and simple green eats them. So while it may be cleaning it is also damaging your unit. As long as you rinse it before 10 minutes damage should not happen but in my opinion I would use a cleaner that I don't need to watch like a hawk to not destroy my unit first.

    Good maintenance. My area has cottoonwood trees which puts fluff (seeds) into the air. Washing down the coils from the inside doesn't give sufficient energy to remove the fluff stuck to the coil outsides. I have to loosen the outer metal grille and peel the fluff off in sheets. It's like a layer of felt. So sometimes you have to go further to get the job done.
