Here in South Africa we had load shedding daily for 8 hrs( 4hrs off 2hrs on then 4hrs off again) so much that we lived prepared for yrs and still do. Your bath water bucket becomes your toilet flushing water, your food planning does not include stuff that needs refrigerating. I listen to all the channels that are affected by the aftermath of the storm and think maybe living in our country made us resilient. I pray for your communities and people who lost loved ones because that is the one thing that really cant be replaced. ❤❤❤❤

Getting nutrition from processed & canned food is impossible. It’s better to grow veggies in that situation to fill in those gaps in nutrition. Quinoa and other ancient grains can help a lot too. But be careful with the idea that store bought can food & dry box food has vitamins & enzymes you need because it really doesn’t. You’re right that the lifestyle change is a good habit to have but our modern world has given us some false ideas about the details of it. I’ve been doing this stuff for 40 yrs for frugality & saving the planet. So I found out the pitfalls a long time ago. But even after all this time I still learn new things all the time & adjust to make processes more efficient & healthy. I am now into Moringa & want to grow several trees. That & Jerusalem artichoke are terrific survival food. Moringa has super nutritional benefits. It can be dried & powdered too for about a year of storing. Then it doesn’t matter if you only have store bought canned foods & dry mixes. I’m always looking for new sources of nutrition. ☮️

It’s my theory that one reason people are acting so angry and out of control is bc (as a society in general) we are all over stimulated and when the constant stimulation goes away they don’t know how to cope. It’s probably been literal years since most people have been alone with their thoughts. Unless they are regularly meditating or journaling or something. I’m talking about the ability to cope with hardships/tragedy/etc. Maybe that’s part of resilience.

Being prepared is about food, water, medical, fuel, shelter, protection and more. These last 2 storms have reinforced that. Unfortunately in the western part of our state, NC, being prepared wasn’t enough when unexpected and unforeseen flooding wipes away everything for some. So sad. 🙏

I think she has an ability, even in a rant, to say things that the people need to hear, and listen to, without being condescending.
I've watched her grow on her channel from her very first post and they have built a wonderful life through all the mistakes and all the triumphs.
They have worked hard and earned everything they have... and living in a glass house ain't easy.
      Much love everybody! ❤️

We live 100% off grid in the high desert of Oregon, I have lived in 14 different states and 1 foreign country.
. I was raised in the military, I am also gen X. I appreciate you guys "educating" the generations that don't know life before the internet. It will definitely lesson the strain on those of us that do know that life. I have been through hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes..... no matter what there is always something to learn, even when you think you have seen/know it all. I thank you guys for helping those that have "no idea."

I can appreciate you guys for your content and saying that people need to take responsibility for themselves. And not like some of the other channels that want to blame everything on the government. Yes, the government should help but your first responsibility is for you to be prepared to take care of your family. So when you’re not prepared, it’s not the government fault is your fault. Thank you and stay safe.

Part of being prepared is having a supply of paper cups, plates and bowls, and even some plastic silverware, paper towel and paper napkins.
We only use it in emergencies. In our everyday lives, we use cloth napkins.
But I have now ordered a foldable camping toilet with plastic bags, and hand-washing plunger we can use if we need to wash clothes.

I was talking to someone about the storm, all the damage and hearing stories of communities coming together to help each other (grilling thawing meat and sharing with everyone) and the person I was talking to says “yea that’s nice but if I were in that situation I’d put on my own life preserver and oxygen mask first” and while I understand that train of thought, I hope that I’d be helping my friends and neighbors with their life preservers and oxygen masks while making sure ours are on as well. Community is what will build those people back to where they started. My heart just breaks for all those affected by the storm. It’s a real eye opener for those of us who still have our homes, power and food. I can’t fathom losing it all. Glad you guys are ok, praying for everyone! ❤

It didn't change until I graduated college, still living with a career, on a farm, milking a cow, raising a daughter, there is no better life. If I was in good enough health, I would still be living that way because I love it!

A newbie here! Love Jess! It is good to see her smiling and laughing. It is hard going without electricity, esp when kids are involved.
As I strolled through comments, I saw some very negative ones. Sad that people don't get it when people are just trying to make the best of a situation. I always try to find positive things to overcome the negative. Sometimes, all one can do is pray for others.

Ive been adamant about being prepared for years my friends are not so interested and want to know why i try to prep for my family and then keep going for more and my answer is every can i put up is one more can on a grocery store shelf for someone else who didnt prepare ahead of time. if i dont need the grocery store someone else gets to have those items. I never want to be in a position where if i go to the store to make sure my kids are fed i might have to fight another person also just trying to feed their kids i would rather put work every day into making sure my we and as many close friends and relatives are covered as possible.

We have city water and septic, we also have a bucket toilet, urine containers, a camp shower plus 4- 55 gallon drums. In the summer we have 4- 300 gallon IBC totes for watering gardens, we also have a berkey style water filter, lanterns and batteries, candles, paper plates, etc. Also have 5 ways to cook with extra propane tanks. Mr Buddy heater. Have a whole house generator. I hope we are doing pretty well being prepared.

We had two weeks without water when all the water lines in our house needed to be replaced. We are in the middle of Tucson Arizona. Residential area. I made an outdoor shower out of a hula hoop and two shower curtains from the $ store. I hung it from our clothesline. And we used the hose to wash off! Bought one of those toilet seats that fits on a 5 gallon bucket. It is funny how we are so used to just turning a tap or flushing a toilet… Losing Electricity that would be a whole other kettle of fish!

The deep freeze in Texas made me realize we needed water. I also sat and wrote out what I would need for a hurricane. We were prepared for Beryl. We did not have power for 8 days. We ran our generator the whole time. We have a tri fuel (natural gas, gasoline and propane) it was awesome. It would run a small air conditioner and all my freezers and refrigerators. I was fortunate

Thank you for this view on the current state of affairs. We are from California, so we are an earthquake away from disaster, BUT we don't have an earthquake season. So, all of us have an emergency plan and supplies at the ready. Our hearts go out to the areas that have been destroyed. There is a light at the end of that dark tunnel, but man it is defeating. The community will come together for success.

Someone showed (for apartments etc,) clearing the water completely from the commode and putting a large sturdy garbage bad in the bowl (duct tape it on the back) then add another in it (that’s the one that gets tossed). They had a type of cup (used to measure ruin in hospitals, etc.) at the front for urine and had saw dust or cat litter in a bucket beside the commode for the rest. But you do have to prep for that, to have what you need. OR just us eat bags and a plastic container w/o the saw dust/litter in a pinch.

Losing power last winter did the same for us. I've been working all year to reduce reliance on the freezers. I've freeze dried and canned most the protein and veggies. I'm still not 'there' yet, though. It scared me so badly when the power went out. We're on well for water and that's my biggest hole. I am juggling different ideas around whether it is an underground catchment or above. I'm told deep well eliminates manual pump bypass. Solar? I appreciate your sharing.

We have a free flowing septic with 4 walls. Great investment, i encourage others to look into that along with solar for a well but more importantly hand pump well for house water.
I also can almost everything... meats, butter, sauces, garlic, soups etc etc than I keep in my freezer. I also keep propane for cook stoves. We also keep solar lights and have wood to burn for 7 years lol. Easy to open a nice home cooked meal in a can and heat than cook during times of such.
Another tip, if power goes out all the meat in the freezer can be easily canned over fire or propane so it doesn't go to waste. I hope this helps, and thank you all for all the advice I've learned from all of you. God bless.

I’m glad you are keeping your Humor up and am not in any way making light of your situation… just made me laugh when Jess said it was 78 - I do wish you had a fan… and power. Prayers and love to you…

So sorry everyone is going thru this! I am glad to hear Jess still laughing. I have a question for Jess…you made a remark about folks having plumbing problems because they used their toilets. I use mine when we have an outage. We just dump water in the bowl when are ready to flush. I suppose you could also fill the tank and flush like normal? Why would this be a problem?

      @WillowBrookHomestead  Місяць тому +2

It’s only a problem when your septic tank is on higher ground and you use an electric pump to pump it from the house to the tank.

We have a Joolca and love it. I understand it may be more expensive than some can afford at the moment, but we feel it’s worth it. It is a portable shower/ kitchen sink system with a portable instant water heater. The pump has a small filter on it, so you can throw it off in a bucket of water and have a hot shower or hot sink of water for dishes. It all packs away into a small tote. You just need a propane tank , 2 D batteries, and a car cigarette lighter/12 volt access. They do make a battery pack that takes the place of the 2 D batteries and the 12 volt outlet, but that’s an additional cost. We lose water quite often in our town. My husband’s a mechanic, so going to bed without a shower isn’t an option. We have thrown the hose off in one of my water catch tanks for the garden and enjoyed a nice hot shower when our town’s been out of water for days. We also have some property that’s 4 miles from the nearest water tap or electric meter, we take this system with us when we know we need to burn brush, we just don’t hook up the water heater. This gives us a way to put out the fire if it gets away and we can take it on the side by side as long as we have a tank of water to pull from.

"The Nomadic Movement" is a family starting from scratch in Panama. They built a ram pump that brings water from a creek quite a long way away to their catchment tank without any electricity. They just built a bathroom after three years, previously always using a hole in the ground with a seat and an outdoor shower. They use catchment for their water, combination of rain and water from the creek, depending on the season. We are on a well, but have two generators and keep gasoline around, as well as a propane stove and a wood-burning stove we use in the winter. We are mostly preparing for bad snowstorms here in the Colorado mountains and wildfires, one of which caused our evacuation earlier this summer (no damage to us). We had a terrible flood back in 2013 and I had never seen anything like it - we were too high up for it to affect us directly, but the city below was not so lucky and they used horses and ATV's for weeks to help those trapped up in the river canyon because the only road was destroyed in multiple places. It is a sobering experience.

Poor people’s ac from my experience long ago. Need large, clean, flexible, medium dishwashing container, dry ice is best but ice, in bucket with fan blowing over it. Might need to think how each of those (3 I think) parts can be accomplished.

@WillowBrookHomestead I see people so reliant upon freezers... and I know from experience that is not sustainable in any real disaster.
Root cellars, canning, dry curing, hard cheeses, dried, smoked, etc... are the best methods of creating a resilient food storage system.
Freezers are great until there's no power.
Simple, independently powered systems that are off grid are far more reliable for powering things like wells, pumps, and freezers for long term for sustainability.
One can do a lot with old school tech.

Were in Canada so we do not have the same risks you guys do. Im heart breaks for everyone who has lost someone, animals, homes, etcetera but also for those struggling with the discomfort of going without from not being prepared. I do hope this is a slight wakeup call for a large population that they should at least have their food and water source systems down. Have you all looked into the portable powerstations? With some of the damages ive seen I doubt a full solar system would have been helpful. But a few pannels, inverter, and battery stored so you could pull out during something like this that could run the wells, septic, freezers might be a good thing to have on hand. There is also bison pumps people can get put onto their water wells which allows you to have access to the well without power, they are essentially like a hand pump. Water catchment off every static animal structure is also smart in my opinion and something we will be doing as we rebuild our homestead on our new property, even though we're totally solar having some redundancies are a good thing!

I feel so bad for y’all. I have been there with a few hurricanes and tropical storms in my past being that I live in Houston Texas. I remember not having power maybe a week but it was horrible and it was hot. Just kept taking baths and David was my husband was cooking outside because we were starting to lose our food and we had to feed the neighborhood and barbecue everything we can. I did prepare with charcoal cats Bad I remember I probably went through about three bad ones maybe four in my lifetime hearing you and the system is not right as far as getting out there soon enough to help with food and water and powered back on you said a lot so we still have CenterPoint going to Neighborhood cutting trees down and just did the tree across the street. They butcher the hell out of them but because they don’t want trees to fall with any more future hurricanes, I guess they’re hoping that we don’t lose power next time
