I am from Alabama, and the state is very much still racist. I am called the black sheep of my family because I am not racist, homophobic, etc. I am about to graduate with my nursing degree and my fiance and I cannot wait to get out of this state.

Robyn Price I am also from alabama and while my whole family isn’t racist I do have racist family members. I remember going to one of my family members retirement party(who is racist) who had African American coworkers speak about how much they’ll miss them. And I just felt so sad for them because they had no idea that this person wasn’t even their friend. I’m grateful that my immediate family isn’t racist so I didn’t grow up with those same values instilled in me

But I'm that family member that would've set that retirement party on Fire I would've blasted whoever the family member was💯💯 I swear I speaks up for Black or white rite or wrong that's why history will repeat itself because people won't call folks on they bullshit so they'll stop‼️

@Mia Smith hey, as a brown girl: don't stress yourself. Rule of thumb would be to treat poc like any other person. Being nice and polite with poc is a good thing, you're not being racist there. You're definitely overthinking a bit though 😁 Unless you go out of your way to purposely be rude to a poc, likely nobody will think you're racist.
I also live in a very white bread country, where I know many people are somewhere between kind of racist and very racist, but until somebody is actively shitty to me or another poc for bullshit reasons, I don't usually assume they're racist.
I know on the internet people are very specific about things sometimes, but in real life you usually can tell when somebody has good intentions (which i feel like you do), so don't worry too much

You are such a good storyteller. I love your history series. As an American, I cracked up when you talked about the "superiority of the American race". You are right, it is such an American attitude. And so ridiculous, lol. I feel like we slammed the door shut forever after on any claim to anything remotely close to superiority when we elected Trump. The Tuskegee experiment needs to be talked about and I am glad you covered it. There are still many, many people here in the States who claim that it never happened. Racism is unfortunately very alive and well among the "superior American race". God, how do people put up with we Americans, lol. So embarrassingly arrogant.

I learned a lot about syphilis in my history of public health and medicine class (the professor I had for that class specializes in the history of syphilis, if you can believe it) and I couldn't believe that anyone allowed this experiment to happen. I'm also baffled by the fact that some aristocratic people (mainly men) in the 1600s and 1700s viewed syphilis as a "badge of honor" and congratulated each other when they got it. It seems like syphilis was not taken very seriously in the past even though it had really terrible consequences. Most people tried to cover it up.

To say medical ethics have changed since then is an understatement. If you are withholding a treatment it can only be done when the participants know in advance that they have a 50/50 chance of being in the control OR treatment group. Furthermore, if a treatment is known to be very effective it cannot be withheld from the participants. This is why studies are halted early sometimes as it is considered completely unethical to withhold an effective treatment.
Also, participants are no longer known as subjects, since they are considered to play an active part in the research.
Finally, ethics committees can go to the other side and be extraordinarily pedantic. When you first send your research proposal in, they send it back after making amendments, and then make you re-submit over and over until they are satisfied. And these amendments can seriously be as small as them asking you to change grammar on your study advertisement. 😁Times have changed so much!
    Great video by the way.

This reminds me a little bit of the strange case of Henrietta Lacks (a poor African American lady) She went to get cancer treatment and the doctors found she had some strange anomaly in her cells where they reproduced like mad. But instead of the doctors telling her all this they hid it from her and came up with a ruse for her to have to keep coming in so the doctors could secretly experiment on her. She died penniless and totally unaware that her body’s anomaly would help to become one of the biggest medical advances in recent history. Scientists made millions off of her body and her kids didn’t even have the money to give her a proper burial. I was literally sick reading the book about her and how she was taken advantage of by the medical staff.

You always have such diverse content on your channel. Thank you for that. Many channels like this have no diversity and I've never understood why. I had never heard of this before watching your video a month ago and I went and did some research on my own afterwards. So many people are now talking about this as something millions of people have never even heard of. I'm horrified and sickened that so much of history on black people has just been looked over. We weren't taught any of this. No one spoke of it. I didn't even know about Tulsa until yesterday.

An uplifting historical story I'd love for you to cover is the "Lesbians and gays support the miners" story (most people heard of it after the film Pride in 2014). It would tie in great following your AIDs crisis video. It's a really great story about unity between marginalised groups. Would also love to hear your take on Thatcher's Britain which is another reason I'd love you to cover this topic! x

Georgia you are an amazing voice for the downtrodden members of our society. Keep making these awesome history videos. You remind me of all my 4 daughters! My eldest was born in '95. My girls are very vocal in their support of people who are mistreated because of their race or gender, etc. You are one of my favourite Utubers! 😊💜

Loved this episode. As a new subscriber, I dont you if you have done a episode on Helen Duncan? She was a medium and was the last person to be jailed under the witchcraft act. This happened during WW2. very interesting.

Suggestion: cover Rosa Parks for something 'uplifting'. She was fierce, determined and a total badass! Also little is known about her work with black sexual assault victims, would love to see her full story covered. Little fact: she was born in Tuskegee

think you should cover the Windrush Generation. Such an important topic here in the UK, but no one speaks about it in detail or from an educational and honest stand point. I think you'd be great at highlighting all of the details and injustices that people are still facing today!

In Canada as far as the 90's they had Canada's version of the FBI folllowing around gay people who worked in polotics. Like just being gay was a crime. ( it was legalised in 1969)

A couple of other videos I'd like to see would be the Triangle Shirt Factory disaster and an expose of James Marion Sims, who experimented with gynecological surgery on African American women without anaesthesia (!). A more positive history subject would be the history of Islamic medicine.

This experiment is something I've heard about my whole life especially because I live in the neighboring state. Every time I hear about it my mind can't seem to comprehend how this was allowed to happen. Horrible horrible racist treatment of men who were doing more good in society than bad.
