For the way Homelander was Raised, it’s clear that he can never raise a Family, in fact there’s a Difference between Love and Care, Homie cares for Ryan only as a Extension of Himself but he doesn’t love him as a Parent should, all he cares about is to make a Legacy in his Image and he’s mentally Unstable that at any moment he can Snap, he’s also Jealous of William in a Weird Way as Billy is the Father Figure the Boy Needs, in the End Ryan will disappoint Homie and will go against him one way or another.
Totally agree with you. Homelander is not capable of truly loving someone. It's not even his own fault. He was literally raised in constant yearning of approval and affection, learning that love is only something conditional and a way of keeping others "in place". This misconcept truly messed him up and turned him - in combination with much other trauma he suffered and inflicted as well during the years - into the monster he is now. He loves the idea of Ryan, of being a good father to him and to do right - but we clearly see again and again, that he is simply incapable of truly loving and raising Ryan. Butcher's a far better dad - and Butcher is... well... Butcher xD
So far we only know that Honelander desire to be loved, never if he desire to love, we don’t really see him create meaningful relationship with any other character because 1) he’s got a huge ego and 2) nobody actually loves him and he knows that. He never sacrifice anything for anyone out of the goodness of his heart and I don’t ever see that he will.
I agree with that fact that Homelander sees Ryan in himself because of his powers and sees a chance to mold Ryan into another him. But, Homelander wants to keep all the spotlight to himself at the same time. He's just set in his owm ways that he can't shrug off. Thank you for this video and explanation. I have a feeling thay Ryan will fight Homelander to save Butcher
He is so possessive of Ryan that it may seem to some people that he loves Ryan. He is emotionally manipulative to Ryan to keep Ryan at his side. Homelander is so desperate for love and to belong to someone, for someone to want Homelander around. It is his greatest weakness--- being fundamentally human inside. But Homelander doesn't know how to love anyone (liked you mentioned, he lacked the proper attention and love, being isolated growing up). Without attention and love, he doesn't know how to love anyone. Any time we see him have any kind of relationship, it always comes with an edge of fear from the other side, but he doesn't always 'see' that at first and is always confused why this person will not love him, and he becomes a reckless, unpredictable bomb that may explode any second... its hard to love someone who you are afraid of---- he doesn't get this. He's been feared all his life, its his 'normal.' So, the way Ryan is afraid of him, doesn't want to be with him the same way he wants to be with his mother or Butcher at various points throughout the season, we see Homelander get incredibly angry and ask questions about this. He doesn't see himself clearly through the eyes of anyone else; "you scare me because I do not know if you love me at all. You scare me, because I wonder if one day you will kill me from an emotional outburst. You scare me--- thats all I feel but you want me to feel more so I have to lie to you all the time to save my own skin." He is stuck in the mind of a child from so many years of not being loved; that need to 'lean' on someone else emotionally is very big. He needs that surety and comfort the way a child does, but because he is a grown man he is forced to live in a way that goes against that need and tries to convince himself he doesn't need love at all.
Homelander doesn’t love his son, he loves the fact that Ryan is the first thing he’s done that wasn’t scripted. Vought never planned for him to have a kid, at least not yet and the first minute taste of freedom that came with it must’ve been exhilarating for Homelander. In addition, as much as he treats himself like a God, Homelander is just a man (a genetically modified man, but still). One day he will inevitably die, and like so many narcissist and maniacs throughout history, he is obsessed with creating a legacy to outlive himself. Passing on his teachings and even superhero title to his son would be way way to ensure his legacy lives forever. Note that throughout all of that never once did he think about what was best for Ryan or what the kid would want out of life. He only ever thought of himself.
There definitely is a part of homelander who is envious of the fact that Ryan basically got to have a normal childhood with a caring mom despite having the same powers.
As a child of a narcissistic sociopathic monster of a parent, I can attest that my own parent only loved me because they saw me as a clone of themselves. I wasn't an individual to them, I was clay to molded and sculpted into their sick and twisted idea of a legacy. I don't presume to speak on behalf of every single kid of every single similar dynamic, but I definitely can relate to it on a personal level. I know, beyond the shadow of any doubt, that mimicry of love and affection were heavily dependent on how well I mirrored them, and obeyed without question. If I deviated from what I can only really describe as indoctrination, the switch from seemingly loving and caring parent to tyrannical sadistic monster would be as quick as someone just removing a physical mask. It was scary. I'm in a better place now, but that's not something you just forget about.
I had a narcissistic mother growing up and throughout my life and healing from the traumas she inflicted on me and the constant mental and emotional manipulation, I can tell you rn that I side with you. Homelander MAY think he loves Ryan but he doesn’t because you cannot show love to someone if you don’t even know what love is. He also never received love so he had absolutely no idea what love is or what it’s even like let alone understand it within himself, feel it and show it to his son. Narcissism is an extremely complex mental disorder. Homelander grew up pretty much depraved of love. That can really fuck with someone.
I do believe Homelander seems to care about Ryan deeply, but the thing is him being a narcissistic sociopath and never feeling any semblance of love, affection and guidance in his childhood, never having a parental figure at least, only doctors that neglected him, tortured him, and treated him like a lab rat while at the same time fearing him because of his strenght just makes him inept of understanding how to love a person, or even parent a child. While at the same time yes he is doing this to toy with Butcher or to keep himself alive, the reason he tries so hard to keep Ryan close to him is that he has that conditioned need for love, approval and validation ever since he was a child, so he tries as you said to vicariously live through Ryan and tries to provide him the childhood he wished he had when he was his age, and he tries to basically mold him the way he wants to, however as much as he wants to be a loving father to Ryan, he just psychologically does not have the facilities for that and does not know what parental love even is supposed to feel like, which is why at the end of the day he manipulates Ryan in a way that he might not realise or even realises after he goes back to the lab that it is selfish, because he does not care about Ryan because he necessarilly loves him even though he might think he loves him, it is because he wants love from Ryan and wants Ryan to be extremely close to him because he never had a person like that in his life. But yeah it is pretty spot on.
crazy that after going to face his childhood, homelander learned nothing about what he actually needed. he is projecting his current perceived needs onto a child who needs what he needed as a child, instead he's giving ryan what he thinks he needs NOW, but even then he's missing the mark. beyond sad
I think Homelander wants to care about Ryan, but he doesn't actually care. It's like the difference between you wanting to do a good thing and you actually doing a good thing, but in Homelander's case he probably doesn't even realize he doesn't care for him, he wants to, so he thinks he does
He risked his life for ryan and gave up killing butcher for him in that fight. He definitely sympathizes with ryan because of his messed up childhood. I dont think homelander knows how to love someone, but he's not a psychopath, he's a narcissist. He does feel, he has guilt and regrets, and he needs to feel loved. Psychopaths dont need to feel loved or care about what people think
I think you're mostly right. And I don't think homelander knows how to love unconditionally. All of his bonds are conditional and based on mutual benefit. I do however think there's potential for the writers to show a side of holander we havent seen and make him actually care about Ryan enough to do at least one selfless act, maybe. It would certainly be a twist and could be explained within the plot imo but that remains to be seen
People who are going against the narcissist argument for Homelander, need to consider one thing. Remember the scene after Ryan kills Koy because he doesn't know his strength and Homelander comes in with milkshakes? Homelander thought Ryan was upset because he didn't do the save solo (i.e. Homelander projected his views onto Ryan). Once he found out Ryan was upset because he killed Koy, he lost all sympathy. He not only berated Ryan for how he felt, but also took the milkshake away, which was a symbolic and literal revocation of own sympathy. Homelander doesn't love Ryan, he wants to be loved by Ryan. Homelander can only understand others the way he understands himself, he doesn't view people as complex autonomous entities worthy of care or sympathy. The only reason he doesn't kill Ryan, is because to do so would mean he would have to face his own pettiness head on. It would also mean destroying his legacy, which is the only way Homelander actually seems to value Ryan. Not for who Ryan is, but for "what Ryan is" relative to himself.
In Season 3, Homelander says that if he had a child with Maeve they'd be 'twice as strong as Ryan'. This is a big clue that he doesn't really love Ryan and only values strength. ua-cam.com/video/79yHWTt3CRg/v-deo.html#t=1m49s
This I disagree Homelander Does actually care about Ryan, in his own manipulative fucked up way. When Soldier Boy hurts Ryan, Homelander was the first person to come to his aid, and even allows himself to team up with butcher to blast Soldier Boy. People can manipulate someone and still love someone these are not mutually exclusive How does Homelander giving Ryan more freedom, keeps him away from Butcher that literally the opposite of what would happen If Homelander was really only doing this to anger Butcher then I feel like he would gloating in his face a lot more like sending posts on social media of his perfect life with Ryan. In Season 4 Homelander is barely even thinking about Butcher while he’s raising Ryan he seams to just ignoring Butcher Lots of Parents reflect themselves onto there kids, it’s a pretty common thing, Homelander just takes it to the extreme When Soldier Boy is talking with Homelander and how much of a disappointment he is, Homelander is on the verge tears that wouldn’t make any sense to manipulate Ryan, especially when it comes to his own ego
Homelander wants to love and to be loved but he doesn’t know how to love anyone and no one can love him because they are too busy being terrified of the psychopath.
Homelander does love ryan however i don't believe homelander knows what love really is because he's never received it so he's just showing ryan what he thinks love is supposed to be
He doesn’t want Ryan to get taken by Vought and tested on, he doesn’t trust Butcher with him because he’s only human. Homelander can use his strength to buy some time for his son to grow and fight on his own, after that the father figure is out of the picture.
As a psychology major, I disagree. Homelander exhibits classic sociopathic traits. Sociopaths can love, but forming connections is harder because they prioritize themselves. They often see their child as an extension of themselves, leading to extreme reactions if the child is harmed. This is evident when Homelander snaps seeing Soldier Boy hurt Ryan and kills the man who assaulted Ryan. You didn't mention these instances.
Homelander is only for for himself he only wants a kid so they could be just like him and even that can get under his skin if they're too popular he's a terrible father bro😭😭
Homelander is the only character in history that truly gives me the creeps, guy has no morals, you can't reason with him, nothing, the slightest thing you could do could piss him off and make him laser you. Before I go to sleep at night, that part where your mind wanders into fantasy land, even if Homelander wanders into fantasy land there is no scenario where I get out alive, such an amazing character. The scariest thing about him is the fact that he is a man child, the slightest tantrum could mean your death, at least with characters like Joker for example, there is that chance you could reason with him, and the fact that he is killable too, but Homelander, what am I going to do to him, use harsh language?
He’s highly highly narcissistic, and they see their children as a part of them. He only loves Ryan because he came from him, and he loves himself above anything
A very bold take, but I have to disagree. He definitely loves Ryan, dude turned his back to a room full of enemies ready to jump him so he can bring Ryan to safety, and when Maeve did jump him, he told her to delay that fight. In any other situation he wouldn't tolerate it, not even slightly.
The writers say he cares,so its canon unless you buy the franchise and change it bro. Homelander doesnt have anything to gain by killing Ryan for the virus. He is at the point where he is aging and wants to leave his mark on the world with Ryan. Without Ryan he doesnt have anything to do. If Ryan died he would just destroy everything cause it wouldn't matter
Homelander only loved Ryan cause he see Ryan as one thing...himself. There are so many hints that Homelander never 100% cared about Ryan. Unlike Butcher
Homelambder doesn't love his son, He loves the idea of having a son. He talks about wanting a family but he doesn't understand familial love at all. If Ryan Grew up to be a better hamlender then he'd disposed of him without betting an eye. Atleast if butcher gets Ryan's custody he'd never want any harm to happen to Ryan despite his methods. He'd send Ryan away and would never let him join boys
He loves what Ryan is, an extension of himself and his legacy. That’s all.

I feel like that would break him especially since he REALLY loved Becca
I wouldn't be surprised if he does find out, and that's what causes him to fully turn against his dad.
The creators said he cares about Ryan that doesnt mean he loves him, honestly Honelamder is incapable of loving anyone even himself he wants to forge Ryan into a perfect version of himself but thats not going to work and eventually he will realize that.
you don't understand any matter of perspectives, & neither is this video...

The scientists were afraid of him but chose to torture him .. and they had to know that one day based on Homelander's history that he would come back for them.. something they knew when he showed up.. why not have a strong on duty to protect them?
I’ve had this thought as well. If they hired their fancy pants psychologists to trick him into needing to be loved so badly, why not have those same psychologists convince him that the experiments were necessary and for his own benefit? Lots of ill kids out there go through horrific medical tests without becoming so resentful towards others about it
For the way Homelander was Raised, it’s clear that he can never raise a Family, in fact there’s a Difference between Love and Care, Homie cares for Ryan only as a Extension of Himself but he doesn’t love him as a Parent should, all he cares about is to make a Legacy in his Image and he’s mentally Unstable that at any moment he can Snap, he’s also Jealous of William in a Weird Way as Billy is the Father Figure the Boy Needs, in the End Ryan will disappoint Homie and will go against him one way or another.
He never sacrifice anything for anyone out of the goodness of his heart and I don’t ever see that he will.
ice is water
You scare me--- thats all I feel but you want me to feel more so I have to lie to you all the time to save my own skin."
He is stuck in the mind of a child from so many years of not being loved; that need to 'lean' on someone else emotionally is very big.
Agree
Golfen What Ifs? I recognize your voice.
I feel like he did love Ryan .. until some fresh milk came along 😂
i think what he feels for ryan is about as close to love as homelander is capable of
Frankly I believe homelander will pull an Omniman the moment Ryan betrays him.
He never had a father figure so he doesn't know how to be one. Hes also lost all emotions to people like a dad wouod but he actually does care
Bruh Ryan could have been the key to slightly turn homelander into somewhat of a chill near pure evil person.

But yeah it is pretty spot on.
crazy that after going to face his childhood, homelander learned nothing about what he actually needed. he is projecting his current perceived needs onto a child who needs what he needed as a child, instead he's giving ryan what he thinks he needs NOW, but even then he's missing the mark. beyond sad
This doesn't prove he doesn't. Love, Ryan it just shows how hard it is to have issues and try to love someone
I think Homelander wants to care about Ryan, but he doesn't actually care. It's like the difference between you wanting to do a good thing and you actually doing a good thing, but in Homelander's case he probably doesn't even realize he doesn't care for him, he wants to, so he thinks he does
Homelander and homeboy
He risked his life for ryan and gave up killing butcher for him in that fight. He definitely sympathizes with ryan because of his messed up childhood.
I dont think homelander knows how to love someone, but he's not a psychopath, he's a narcissist. He does feel, he has guilt and regrets, and he needs to feel loved.
Psychopaths dont need to feel loved or care about what people think
I think he does kind of, all Homelander wanted was a family, but he's a sociopath and is interested in grooming Ryan to take his place.
I betcha that homelander kills Ryan in this final episode
People dont know what real love looks like and this explains why ppl ignore red flags they themselves and vice versa in relationships
In Season 3, Homelander says that if he had a child with Maeve they'd be 'twice as strong as Ryan'. This is a big clue that he doesn't really love Ryan and only values strength.
ua-cam.com/video/79yHWTt3CRg/v-deo.html#t=1m49s
I think its similar to when told maeve he loved her in his own way
In other news, water is wet
This I disagree Homelander Does actually care about Ryan, in his own manipulative fucked up way. When Soldier Boy hurts Ryan, Homelander was the first person to come to his aid, and even allows himself to team up with butcher to blast Soldier Boy.
People can manipulate someone and still love someone these are not mutually exclusive
How does Homelander giving Ryan more freedom, keeps him away from Butcher that literally the opposite of what would happen
If Homelander was really only doing this to anger Butcher then I feel like he would gloating in his face a lot more like sending posts on social media of his perfect life with Ryan. In Season 4 Homelander is barely even thinking about Butcher while he’s raising Ryan he seams to just ignoring Butcher
Lots of Parents reflect themselves onto there kids, it’s a pretty common thing, Homelander just takes it to the extreme
When Soldier Boy is talking with Homelander and how much of a disappointment he is, Homelander is on the verge tears that wouldn’t make any sense to manipulate Ryan, especially when it comes to his own ego
Homelander wants to love and to be loved but he doesn’t know how to love anyone and no one can love him because they are too busy being terrified of the psychopath.
Casual take. I get your channel name now
Bruh, I've been saying this for a while now lol.
boys is a big family drama
Homelander does love ryan however i don't believe homelander knows what love really is because he's never received it so he's just showing ryan what he thinks love is supposed to be
See something say something
'I can wait several years more, make another kid.'
He doesn’t want Ryan to get taken by Vought and tested on, he doesn’t trust Butcher with him because he’s only human.
Homelander can use his strength to buy some time for his son to grow and fight on his own, after that the father figure is out of the picture.
You are talking straight facts in this Homelander/Ryan video
As a psychology major, I disagree. Homelander exhibits classic sociopathic traits. Sociopaths can love, but forming connections is harder because they prioritize themselves. They often see their child as an extension of themselves, leading to extreme reactions if the child is harmed. This is evident when Homelander snaps seeing Soldier Boy hurt Ryan and kills the man who assaulted Ryan. You didn't mention these instances.
I think he wants to try to be a good dad, but doesn’t know how.
Homelander is only for for himself he only wants a kid so they could be just like him and even that can get under his skin if they're too popular he's a terrible father bro😭😭
If Ryan had no superpowers he wouldn't even acknowledge him😒😒
Homelander has no redeemable qualities whatsoever.
With How Homelander "raises" Ryan in season 4, I don't think he does care about his son (spawn).
True
Homelanders ego is having a manger breakdown and he wanted the spotlight and if the virus goes global it's homelander first for himself
He’s highly highly narcissistic, and they see their children as a part of them. He only loves Ryan because he came from him, and he loves himself above anything
Homelander is the abusive dad
A very bold take, but I have to disagree. He definitely loves Ryan, dude turned his back to a room full of enemies ready to jump him so he can bring Ryan to safety, and when Maeve did jump him, he told her to delay that fight. In any other situation he wouldn't tolerate it, not even slightly.
I once heard that, psychopath love their children as they see them as an extension of themselves
Homelander doesn’t love Ryan like at all and if Anything he would kill his own son the second he got the virus literally.

He loves Ryan but not like a true dad. He doesn’t want him to be better and not make the same mistakes he did.
No, absolutely not. Homelander is WAY too selfish to share the spot light
I believe homelander loves his son I mean I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t but season 4 really makes me believe he does
Homelambder doesn't love his son, He loves the idea of having a son.
