Ok, several people started comparing this with Dan's video - a video that I was totally unaware of (so thanks for sharing this- I love Dan's videos!). However, I would suggest you watch the video before jumping into conclusions. Even from the first minute you will realize this has NOTHING to do with Dan's video. It's about me sharing my experience of working in the music business for over 20 years- and how I navigated the loudness wars when you *DID* need to make things insanely loud. This was *before* UA-cam and *before* even LUFS were a thing. We were talking RMS levels back then. And you needed to be loud if you wanted to make a living as a mastering/mixing engineer and producer.
So please, before commenting without watching the video at all, watch first and you will realize this is not a relevant video to Dan's. But the title is still relevant.
    Lots of love,
    Dom

    Excellent info and demo, thanks.
The Invisible Limiter sounds very clean despite the clip mode and super high input levels. I don't have it yet, as I've never heard of it. For now, what I'm doing is clipping followed by a brick wall limiter, with the LVC Clipped-MAX into the Venomode Maximal 3.
I like to ride the fence on having some dynamics and somewhat loud.
    Nice color changing shirt too.

Thanks, Dom! These plugins are fantastic tools. Creating a melody, crafting lyrics, and producing great music with 100% amazing instrument support is the most challenging part for song and music producers. If a track gets over 50 million clicks, then you're in the game. 😊 Currently about 150.000 new music tracks are released on YT alone per month.. A lot stuff needs to be mixed and mastered. 👍

The video is not about LUFS at all ;) I share my real-world experience when LUFS were not even a thing and people wanted masters as loud as possible. In my opinion going for extreme loudness this days is a moot point. Just wait for the video to be out ;)

The mastering chain in the "loudness wars" days 😀,
the crazy ways to obtain updated information 10-15 years ago, so so true in hurts :) As a sound designer for 2 decades, this video really made me smile and remember the victorious feeling and satisfaction once I found my ultimate output plugin/s that really "did the job" and enabled the desired RMS on a song or soundtrack without squashing the mix. I had a very similar experience with my growing clients community once I won the loudness wars, so maybe it is true to say that you should never compromise on your mastering and always aspire to improve your sound methods.

    • @DomSigalas
      @DomSigalas  10 місяців тому +2

Very well kept secret. Everybody back then was suggesting Elephant and some other limiters. I honestly believe that people were trying to mislead people because the loudness wars were so aggressive. Also, Invisible required a bit of research in order to get the most out of it so some people would not get past the ugly GUI :)

The Loudest master I ever heard is coming from Donny & Katharsys - Panic EP. it has some insane values, it hits at some point the -0.9LUFS mark :o The whole process is not only the last limiting stage but the entire process that make the production super loud. Im using Acustica ASH in combination with Ozone 9 Maximizer as final limiter but I am going to try this Invisible Limiter G3. A lot of top mastering engineers like Streaky, Luca Pretolesi and David Gnozzi are recommending use final brick wall limiter with good amount of oversampling but without true peak function enabled - as true peak algorithms somehow smear transients in unpleasant way... Thanks for another great video Dom!

Hey Dom! you said you're using now a macbook pro. Can you do a stress test on your mac just as you did with your pc. It would be highly helpful to choose with the right one. What's the configuration of your mac system?

Thanks for sharing. You said not for piano ballads. I mostly do solo piano. And i find it really hard to come to the 14LUFS and sound good on all systems without compensating the feel of the recording. What would you recommend for doing solo piano limiting? Thanks for sharing all your wisdom 🙏🏼

Pianos are hard to compress/limit. They are so rich in resonances, overtones and cover a super wide range of frequencies with very percussive midrange. I would suggest first, filtering the sub low end and taming any nasty resonances with dynamic EQ. Then add mild compression in stages and if you have a vocal definitely use sidechain dynamic EQ on the piano on it (watch my video on my no.1 mixing trick- this is the no.1 thing I do with pianos :) ). After this, limit on stages on the master bus. Avoid distortion or saturation plugins. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your ideas Dom. For Piano I now use Soothe2, The Softube Summit Audio Grand Channel and Softube Tape to smoothen things out and then use the God Particle to do some magic and use some Weiss mastering stuff at the end. This works quit well. Thanks again for your enthousiastic videos. Love to see a guy as crazy about music and VST;s as myself. @@DomSigalas

Have you managed to compare it to Sonnox Oxford Limiter? Or even Massenburg's MDW DRC2 :) (I would be really curious to see how these compare!)

Grazie Dom, sei sempre molto preciso e corretto nelle spiegazioni ..... ma volevo provare invisible limiter G2 ... ma non c'è modo di installare il plung in in Tray mode ... che tristezza Grazie

It's odd I randomly had the same thought recently about music production in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Everyone kept their cards close to their vest. Not many wanted to share. And indeed there was a ton of misleading and diversionary thoughts perpetuated in online forums back then.
Today producers and bedroom studio engineers really don't know how great it is today versus any other time in history for learning and sharing of ideas. We have sources such as Dom, willing to show so many tips and tricks that wouldn't have been shared before. You either had to have an in at a studio or learn through trial and error. Mostly trial and error.
UA-cam is really helpful but we still have to sort wheat from chaff. Lots of newbies pretend they're an expert. So please keep mind and stick with sources such as Dom that have actual production chops in real studios and do production/mixing/mastering work for a living.
