More than 4K controversial guardrails remain in Arizona after they were removed from approval list

- Two teens crashed into a guardrail with a known controversial history, one died and the other lost a leg. Now the survivor wants the guardrails changed.
This is really sad. I’d like to see @SteveTheGaurdrailGuy on this. We need to remedy safety issues when they’re identified as soon as possible.
Back in the 70s when cars were big steel boats from Detroit, they didn't have all that sophisticated junk on the guardrails in Arizona back then.
Most of the guardrails I saw along interstate 40/US 66 were standard guardrails with either the rolled rounded end, or they started off flush with the ground and came upwards from the shoulder to join with the regular guardrail.
Many sections of the guardrail back then was natural rusted metal color. Also a prominent amber object marker 8 x 24 was at the leading edge with a black background displaying three 4" square patches. Highly visible in snow, or sandy locations.
Definitely not the best choice. Washington state uses the lines of plastic cushions
ADOT had computer database in 1997 that tracked accidents and had all the risky road areas data then.
Az would rather give tax breaks to corporations, police and private schools than actually help its citizens.
Explains why we have such a half-assed infrastructure. Smh

First time I saw a guard rail that terminated by gradually sloping into the earth, I thought that was a good idea.

Yeah I heard about the wooden stand guard rails and what they do to regular trucks and it’s scary when I see them I’m confused because I thought they were supposed to be gone I see them on the north 17 and south 10😟

Why do I feel like this has happened somewhere else? I am sure that this has killed lots of others. Why the hell is anyone stopping a product that has a flaw being recalled or fixed on site? COMPANY NEEDS TO PAY FOR ALL REPLACED. Are you serious?

Everytime i see one of those guard rails damage i say good, that could been an innocent person getting hit by a drunk someone on their cell or that fall asleep, those people should have not been on the road at that time

This seems like a liability with company that made the rails. But if state doesn't address proven safety concerns, risk, known hazards that can and have caused damage and death? This seems like someone is dragging feet why? Some lining pockets from this somehow? Just saying seems someone would get states together. At least show the public that these guard rails are safe. There i enough evil in this world. Life is not this hard unless something is not being done or someone is making money. Well either way I guess they are golden! They get paid either way. Why do we not have community goal list ? Man cause just imagine how much time and money are wasted. Thanks for waking us up to the fact that this is not being done. Anyone tested theses things? Labs, talk to more families of those that died or got hurt. Can you imagine? Families start calling folks in charge until they don't have a choice but to remember you. Sometimes to do the right thing in life for the big picture. Well sometimes we might get cussed when our feet hit the floor in the morning. But we are the people. Most have just forgotten what that means. Let them cuss you. I would rather stand up for the right thing than never be given a choice. Make your day amazing and never stop moving forward!

With no disrespect for any loss of life ever, this story fails to prove the exact nature of the guardrail failure.
At 1:53 there is a drawing and explanation of the "intended" energy absorbing design of these rail ends. Compare that to the images seen at 1:43. The upper left picture does appear to show the rail has been flattened and rolled out the "extruder chamber" as described, but much of the energy is clearly spent folding the rail into two or three layers. Clearly, they are reducing the velocity of a heavy object, which is the job they are intended to do. Compare these to the cash vehicle which I might add meets dozens of Federal safety standards with full airbags side impact doors (which are several times stronger than the car you rent anywhere outside the USA), Antilock Brakes, Traction Control, etc. Where is the end cap in question? This accident involved a lot of mass and velocity, add the side on impact and you have F1 energy to dissipate. Can it be done? Sure, just like F1 does it. But Karen will never let us stack 60 used tires bolted together everywhere the speeding phone using public might decide to crash.
My condolences to the families, but I'm not convinced the guard rails are not doing the job they were intended to. Everything can be improved, and it will happen sooner if the companies who tried to help are *not* bankrupt.
They are GUIDRAILS! Stop calling those things Guardrails. The end terminal is ridiculous. Throw some cables on the end, send cars rolling into the roadway.

let people hit a wall .. maybe they will learn to not speed , speeding kills as for tire blowouts az should have yearly inspections on every vehicle on the road... ive seen people literally drive at 90 with bald tires ..but yet they just passed a car inspection... tires arent even looked at during car inspections.. all the do is plug in a obd 2 and thats it every 2 years..

I drive on Arizona roads all the time and have noticed they are full of pot holes from lack of maintenace. They used to be taken care of when we had a republican govenor. They must be taking the money now and giving it to the homeless and lazy people. Anything for a vote.

On the other hand, I have seen innocent people hit from the side by wild lane-changers and forced into guardrails!! Our out of control freeway speeds in AZ seem to add to these "pinball-machine" crashes!!

No, the whole point of guardrails is to protect vehicle occupants in the event of a crash. It would make sense to have ones that aren’t dangerous. You should watch the segment again.
The end cap rail IS supposed to collapse and curl up on impact and NOT slice through cars and YES ENGINE BLOCKS TOO. They are defective.......
If another vehicle collides with you, causing you to lose control of your vehicle and now you're impaled on an unsafe guardrail, increasing your chance of serious injury, you will understand what the problem is.
