Fast or Built to Last? Do Dual-Sports Stand a Chance Against Enduros?

- Can dual-sports handle hard trails, or do enduro bikes always win? In this video, I compare budget-friendly dual-sports like the CRF250L, CRF300L, WR250R, and DRZ400 to high-performance enduro machines like the EXC 500, CRF450L, and FE 350.
Lets break down the key differences in weight, suspension, tires, speed, durability, and maintenance costs to see if dual-sports can keep up when the trails get tough. Are they just slower, or can they hold their own with the right upgrades?

Good talk !
Cheers from Down under. KLX400e+ for weekend trips/rides & a Himalayan 450 fitted out for long distance, dirt road & desert touring. The right tool for the job was my training as a young tradie.
People need to keep in mind their designed uses. I got a crf300l because I wanted an exclusive off-road bike, but I don't have a trailer. It's a bit heavier than an Enduro but at least I can ride it to the trail. It's also nice if I want to do anything like a BDR
Good explanation on many key points given succinctly. As a newer rider with a KLR considering a lighter dual sport like Drz, wrr or even dr650 vs 525 exc as the next purchase, this is very helpful.
The KLR is a good bike for my goal to explore if I’m more of a pavement or off road rider, but I quickly discovered the off road challenge of the weight of KLR, especially after riding a KLX300. What a difference 130lbs and more aggressive tires makes! I am swapping my KLR’s 50/50 tires for 70/30 Tusk Waypoints to see the difference that makes, but seriously considering having a dual sport/road legal enduro dedicated to the trails for safety and fun reasons, and getting a cruiser or more road focused machine dedicated for on road.
An experienced rider seems to be the key to these compromise bikes allowing one to split the difference between on/off road capabilities, but for newer riders the compromises make learning more challenging.
The KLR is awesome, honestly I think it's a lot better offroad than most people think. It is definitely harder to learn on a heavier bike though, more commitment involved.
My current setup is a gen1 KLR for longer rides and a DRZ for trail riding. I'd rather have two cheap bikes that cover all my ridding than one nice one.
I loved my worked over 2010 KLX300r, it was a jack of all trades. I replaced it with a low K 2006 KLX400r witch I will do worked suspension + tank + seat (maybe) & all the other bits n pieces to get the best endurance out of it (for me & the bike). Cheers.
MT21 front Tusk D-sport in the back. Best set up I’ve tried on my DRZ. Great on the road and trail.
I'm also a fan of the MT21 up front.
High performance enduro machines like the KLR650. This is a great video! We should do a comparison between the DR and KLR
100% The KLR is a race bike. We will have to swap bikes on one of our next rides.
Agree with everything you said , now the question is do I wait for the KTM 390 ADV R or just get a Honda or Yamaha and trade it in 5 months from now ?????
If it were me, I’d go for a 250L or 300L Rally. More time on the road and less time at the dealership. However I do like the way the new 390 ADV R looks.
What are you wanting to do? More road oriented go with the Honda 300L/Rally or DRZ. More dirt focused go with the WR250R. I currently have a T7, WR250R and a YZ250FX. T7 and YZFX are good for their respective riding classes, but the WRR is a bike I can do both on albeit a bit slower/less comfortable.
@ Id argue the DRZ is a lot more dirt oriented than the CRFs. Way better suspension offroad but the gearbox sucks on road. Really needs that 6th gear...

I need the extra ponies for the Hwy , 15 to 20hp more goes a long way . Plus not sure if the flameouts or stalling issues are resolved yet on the 300L . The dealership said they can't do the 550 performance ECU or aftermarket exhaust so I would need to hunt a place down to do that . That's what I would want to do if I was planning on keeping it for some time .
An Enduro machine is a great bike for literally EVERYTHING...
Uh....Except the road and long distance fuel economy.. But everything...😄
