Yamaha Super Tenere No-Start Issue Fixed

  • My Yamaha Super Tenere would not start when I took it out of hibernation yesterday. That's odd because I always fill up the tank and add stabilizer and keep the battery on a trickle charger. My other Yamaha, filled with the same gas/stabilizer, started up fine.
    The battery seemed okay. The engine cranked and was trying to fire. Eventually it did start and run. I drained the gas tank and checked the air box and wiring for any signs of mouse infestation. None. It ran fine with the new gas.
    Not sure if it was a gas issue or not.
    Bill's excellent video on accessing the air box and changing the spark plugs:

    Glad you were able to get it started . The S10 hard start issue has extensive debate on the Tenere forums out there. The air filter oil is from the engine vent running into the air box. Some people run the minimum engine oil amount to reduce that, but it's not a serious issue. Good job 👍

      thanks for the reassurance on the oily filter Michael! I better get to the Tenere boards and get some research done.

    I'm surprised the fuel went bad. In 38 years , I never had that issue. However, I had a 83 Honda CB 1100F that require a fresh set of plugs every time the bike would sit for a few weeks.
    Glad to see the Tenets us up and running!

      I still am not sure of anything. I've never had a bad gas issue either and I did use the exact fuel and stabilizer on my other Yamaha, which started fine. I'll have to keep an eye on it and see what happens. Thanks for the comment!

    Going to reiterate what another person (Neil Barnwell) posted a few yrs ago:
    1) Enable Kill Switch
    2) Turn Ignition ON; All electronics will turn on except Fuel Pump (Fuel Pump will not turn on with Kill Switch enabled; this is the goal!)
    3) Disable Kill Switch
    4) Open Throttle all the way and hit Starter Button
    P.S. A bit of Marvel Mystery Oil at every other fill up is a good, affordable and safe way to keep all the slides, injectors, etc lubed and functioning properly.
    That is all. Enjoy!

    Got that fooker started. Just like you said I just kept cranking it. I started and gave it some gas at the same time and it sputtered. Then I had to keep trying and a few times hit the starter and gave it lots of gas. Did that several times and it seemed to get closer and closer and then fired up. Let it run for a long time. And it seems to be running now. Never have had it do this before after sitting the winter. It is like it wasn’t feeding the gas thru just on the start without giving it gas. My friend said his 4 wheeler has done the same thing. Thanks for the video. It helped.

    Glad she is up an running again! When you fill it up at the end of the year make sure it is so full that you can see the fuel otherwise you can still get condensation. Just thought of this but you may want to check your plugs now too as they may be a bit foul.

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  6 років тому

      I typically fill the tank to the top thinking that will limit rust. I didn't check the plugs because it seems like a pretty involved job. But I may have to go there if this continues.

    Keith I don't think it was stale gas. I had the exact same problem this winter with my 2017 Super Tenere. Mine was not in storage I was in Florida, driving it regularly and the fuel was fresh. It only occurred once and the only thing that was different was that the day before I had been fitting some auxiliary lights and had started the bike a few times and cycled the ignition a few times during the process. I have to assume that this either drained the battery a bit or flooded the engine. When it wouldn't start I just continued to crank with the throttle wide open and eventually it started. When it did start there was a strong smell of gas. Hope this helps. Keep up the great videos.

      @AdventuresWithMe00  6 років тому

      Thanks Jim. Maybe I tossed out $18 worth of good gas! The funny thing is that I only turned on the key to adjust the clock the night before. On that video that was literally the first time that day I turned the key on, to try to start it. We'll see if it happens again.

      Thank You JF, I have put 22,000 mile on my Super Tenere since I bought it in January of this year. I hadn't ridden in a couple of weeks, but was showing a nephew different things on my Tenere and must have flooded it. Luckily I found this video again and read this post. My bike is now running thanks to your post.

    to avoid that fuel issue I topped up the fuel tank, used the stabilizer (as you mentioned), connect the battery tender and every 2 weeks I turn it on for about 10 minutes... (I live in Toronto, but my garage is underground and temperatures never go under the freezing mark (40F or 0C) nice video!

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  6 років тому

      Thanks Serguti. I do all of that except start it in the winter. I have been conditioned to think that needlessly starting and running the bike at idle creates unneeded wear. But it might be worth a shot.

    • @andrewkitchenuk
      @andrewkitchenuk 6 років тому

      I agree about regular(monthly) fire-up if you take a bike off the road for the winter although it needs to be brought right up to operating temp to avoid condensation issues. Modern vehicles (cars too) are designed to be used & don't take kindly to sitting around.

      I'd watch out for water damage to your exhaust system if you only run the bike for short periods. If possible get out on the open road for half an hour to let the system get properly warmed up so that any water will evaporate.

    Mine started fine for the first ride this season. I rode 150+ miles to drain the fuel tank down for some maintenance. The next day I had some work to do on it and replaced the side stand switch. After replacing the switch I started the engine and then tested the switch , it worked shutting off the engine. Then I tried starting again and it cranked just like yours in the video. I think it was because of shutting it down immediately after starting when I tested the switch. I'll be watching this issue as well, hopefully riding today after work again.

    This is a known issue. Have experienced the same on my Super Tenere (2014) as has my colleague who has the same bike model. I can reproduce it with a cold engine: Turn on ignition, allow pump to prime. Then hold the starter button in for 2 seconds but release it before the engine starts. If you then try to start the engine it will have the same symptoms you describe. For me the 'fix' was to make sure the battery was fully charged then hold the starter button in for a full 40-60 seconds (yes, I'm aware this will strain the starter) and the bike will then start. However, this problem is a very rare event to happen on its own.

    I had the same issue a few months ago. After doing everything that was stated in this clip I still had a bike that turned over but did not start. So I took out ignition coils and smeared some vaseline on the metal banding and a blob in end where the spark plug is housed, put it all back together and hey presto the bike fired first time.

    Glad I could help but this is known problem on super10.
    It usually happens after you turn on/off the bike quickly a few times. Somehow the computer gets confused and runs the bike rich.
    It happened to me when I was installing aux lights and adjusting them. Now everytine I start bike, I let it run for a min or 2.
    It should be the first thing to look up for before battery or gas issues!

      @@AdventuresWithMe00 I've got 45000 miles on mine. I've had 3 or 4 hard starts. At first I thought I was letting off the starter button to quick. But that may not be the case. It has always finally started without doing anything other than letting it sit a few minutes. Last time It happened. I was riding along and it looked like rain. So I pulled over and 5 minutes later it didn't want to start. SHIT. So when I got home. I decided I was gonna make it do it again. I have cold started and killed it and couldn't get it to do it. I have tried and tried. WEIRD. My bike has been flashed with a header and pcv. It's been over 2 years since the last one. It'll fire right up at 35 degrees. I see alot of people running octane booster and premium. I run mine on reg and never had a knock or any fuel problems. I've changed plugs twice in 45000 miles and they looked great.

      Did you hear any idea about this issue?
      OK, I understand the root cause is the petrol, but WHY?
      usually, the fuel injector systems are not too sensitive to petrol.
      My opinion: Is there too much ethanol in a petrol?..

  • @richardmourdock2719
    @richardmourdock2719 5 років тому

    I had this issue once with my 2013. FWIIW, I had been in Canada and had a few stops that did not allow access to 91 Octane so I carried some octane booster. When I got home I still had about a third of tthe bottle of octane booster and poured it into the tank to use it up. At this point the engine was turned off, I was home and I didn't get back to the bike for several days and then it didn't start. The octane booster was a liquid heavier than gas and I think went right to the bottom of the tank and didn't have a chance to be shaken around in the tank to fully dissolve it. I bought some 93 Octane, added it in and shook the bike from side to side for about fifteen minutes and it finally started. Don't know if I'll ever use octane booster again, but if I do, it won't be at the end of a ride when the bike is about to sit for a time.

      That's interesting Richard...I've never heard of that before. I do use Sta-Bil on the bike every winter, but I have used it in all my bikes for 14 years and never a problem. It will be interesting to see what happens when I put the bike back into hibernation in December and then try to start it in the spring. I've been riding all season, the bike occasionally sits for 2 weeks, and it has never failed to start since this video.

    Winter is not as long in SW Indiana as your part of the world, but the only time I used a gas stabilizer, I had a similar problem. Never again. Henceforth, I just roll it out the garage door a couple times each winter and fire it up for ten minutes or so. No problems since. And oh yes, of course, DO NOT touch the throttle after you turn the key to on and the computer is booting up. Only when it starts to fire should you give it a small bit of gas. That a lesson learned on both of my two Super Teneres over the years.

      That's great advice Richard. I didn't have the problem last year and it was the only time I've had an issue like that with a bike. I will try the Sta-Bil when I put the bike back into its hibernation in a couple of weeks.

    The FJR's can do the same thing. They don't like to be cold started & just shut off. Just hold the throttle wide open while turning over and it'll start. I think it may be a Yamaha thing. I always let the temp come up when I start the bike.

    try this:1. ignition off. 2.both display buttons press and ignition on,the buttons further 8 seconds hold the display show "SCU". 3. Press TCS, button change "ECU" on display. 4. Again press both buttons ( TCS and Reset ) a long time.5. In the right display show you now " Diag". 6.Now turn up the throttle fully and push the start button for 4-5 seconds. 7 Close the throttle and ignition off. ignition on and start the Supertenere now if should works. I wish you lots of nice Trips with your Supertenere

      I'm not sure about your situation, but with mine the fuel lines that I pulled off were simply the breather lines. I followed them down to the skid plate, pushed them up towards the tank, and that gave me plenty of slack to attach them and reinstall the tank. It was easy once I took a minute to trace down the lines. Good luck!

      What, my bike threw a hissy fit when I returned after 5 months gone. Even though winterized, and my talking to her about what was going to happen, I came back to issues. Just like a dog left alone too long she had leaked a little fluid, and then, even with a good charge, it took a long crank and a lot of sweet talking to get her to fire. Then she was sluggish till I burned off enough gas to get some fresh into her along with a healthy dose of SeaFoam (Walmart). Then we went for a 3k ride to Idaho and back to NMexico before she got put back to bed. Unfortunately things were rushed this time and the battery wasn't disconnected, so I got to buy a new one before prepping her for a ride to Panama via Phoeniz, AZ 6 months later (crossed into MX the 29th of Dec'18). A little wet, but we get to have an almost daily visit together without that other lady of mine getting in the way. Oh well, My Kawa XII hasn't learned to cook yet, but there is always hoping. :)

    Too much oil in the crankcase will produce additional vapors and release into the air box contaminating a sensor. You can tell by oil on filter (your filter needs replacement) Also ,jump starting from a automotive charging system can do damage to a bikes electrical system.(use only in a emergency) Good Luck.

    I was trying to test ride an older 2012 Tenere, and first they said the battery was dead, come back in 3 hours, so they called me and told me that they couldn't get it to idle, it could be older gas because its been sitting for a while. Now it's been a few days they are "Diagnosing" the problem still... I already rode the Africa twin, it didn't really impress me too much, i have my eyes on the Tenere mainly for the reliable shaft drive... But if a little less than one year old gas can stop this machine, oi!

    • @AdventuresWithMe00

      I don't know about Canada gas, but the corn they put into US gas is really causing a lot of engine problems if left to sit, even a few weeks. I am down in Latin America now and you can let the gas sit a long time before issues (generator). My bike never get's to sit more than a week unless I am gone, but my wife's doesn't get ridden unless I do it (4 rides in 7 months unless behind me). She loves it, but just doesn't take it most of the time. We are in the rainy season right now, but that is only a minor issue as most days you can ride in the morning. I will look and see if they even sell Gas Stabilizer here???? Just saying that even with the Stabil, maybe cycling the gas out of the small parts and tubes, not just the tank might help. Just a thought.
