Hyundai i20N In-depth Review: Should You Buy One?!

- Hello and welcome back to Life In Motion!
In today's video, Hyundai very kindly invited me down to drive this Hyundai i20N. This is the very first Hyundai I have driven and let me tell you, I have a LOT of fun!
You will see me go around the outside and inside of the i20N, really focusing on the quality and useability of the car. I then take the car for a drive to find out whether it's worth the £25,250 that Hyundai ask you for.
Performance wise, the i20N packs a 1.6 producing 204 PS and 275 Nm of torque propelling it from 0-62 in 6.7 seconds.
I hope you enjoy the video and I look forward to releasing more Hyundai videos...very soon!

I have one of these, great little cars. It's the closest car I could find that resembles the old hot hatches of the 80's and 90's that I grew up with. This very much reminds me of my first car which was a 205 Gti 1.9, at low speeds it's not a particularly pleasant car to drive and just wants to accelerate all the time. That can be quite tiresome but fantastic when you get a bit of open road. Ive always said that 200-250bhp is the maximum you ever need on the road for proper enjoyment, i've had much more fun in this than I ever did in some more powerful cars.
Thanks for this! I do agree with more than 200-250bhp does seem to be wasted on the public roads some times - enjoy your car
How's the build quality inside looks a bit cheap in places. But it is 25k and not for luxury. Just wondering
@danloki618 @ian7675 will have an opinion but when I spent my time in the car, I was really impressed. It doesn’t feel like a cheap small car. It feels on part with a Fiesta ST
@@danloki78 reminds me of Japanese cars from the 90’s, looks cheap but seems to be robust. It really is solid enough, the only irritating thing has been a knock from the rear seats which is a common i20 issue. Apart from that it’s been great, mine has now done 36k miles so it’s lasting well.
@@ian7675 cracking motor, enjoy lad!
I work for Hyundai and ordered mine a few days ago delivery from now is 5-6 months, totally worth the wait and happy to add it to my fleet with my 335d touring! Awesome review mate👍🏼
Awesome to hear, all the best when it arrives! Thanks Jack, appreciate it 👌🏻
Great review of the car, I have one in all white and love it.
Useful review, thanks. Your enthusiasm shows you clearly not just liked, but enjoyed the car.
Really glad you enjoyed it! It’s absolutely a car that can enjoy, not just like
Greetings from Poland. My copy in a discreet, gray color as a mouse is waiting for me in the living room. I'm picking it up in a few days. I can not wait :-)
Great car the color I’d go for would be the polar white....
I've ordered the same colour patiencely waiting for July delivery second colour choice was White 🤞👍
Great review mate! Loved the quality you put into it throughout and it really was a great car to drive on the day 👍
Thanks Sam! Appreciate it 👌🏻 was a proper car wasn’t it
Sometimes in life less is more, so with this car, there doesn't need to be some crazy horsepower that will make you smile...As long as there is the recipe for success: light body with good chassis, right horsepower - torque and a very good setup for the road... and that was it!
A point well made!
really tempted to buy one, seems like it was made for me.
Go for it! A proper car
Nice review, first time visitors, I've ordered the Silver delivery July 🤞,perfect timing for Spring weather here in Western Australia 🇦🇺 will subscribe Cheers Mate 🍻
Thanks! Enjoy your car when it arrives :) really appreciate the subscribe 🙌🏻
One of the most comprehensive reviews mate - many thanks!
I ordered mine a few days ago after a good long test drive - fantastic car!!) - long wait I know, but will be worth it! From comments here it's a bonus to hear that you can also get reasonable economy out of these cars when you're not so heavy on the right foot and yet still have the the performance in reserve to really enjoy! - economy and fun - brilliant combination!
I’m glad you liked it! It will definitely be worth the wait, enjoy when it arrives 👌🏻
I've ordered mine over a year ago now, still waiting :D
Wow! Hopefully it arrives soon
The difficulty will be to actually drive it conservatively. It seems like the sort of car that eggs you on to get on the pedal.
@@BobFlocker You're right, and you do have to exercise some constraint! Having said that, when you overcome the temptation and drive sensibly in eco mode, it's easy to get over 50 mpg on a long run, which is quite a bonus for this type of car. Also, fuel prices these days do tend to rein in the tendency for spirited driving!
I have the Indian version of the i20 n-line. Only 118bhp, but it's my first car, so I'm happy with the power. Love it!
The n-line is a great car! Enjoy
The n-line is a great car, enjoy!
The n-line is a great car, enjoy!
@@LifeInMotionuk thanks! It's really a lovely car.
Great review , just bought the last one available in Ireland today , uk prices are so good compared to here , € 43,000 is the price here which converts to £ 37,540
Wow that’s not cheep at all! I’m glad you enjoyed the review
Wow what a fantastic car and loved your review and your obvious enjoyment of this truly special little beast 😁😁😁
Thanks Claudia! It was great fun, I was thoroughly impressed 👌🏻
@@LifeInMotionuk I'm getting one😊😊😊
@@claudiadavies5110 superb, when does it arrive?
@@LifeInMotionuk originally early February this year and, like for a lot of people at the moment, everything went a bit messy and it's almost certainly going to be in about two or three weeks from now😂😂😂 It's a crazy time to buy a car!
@@claudiadavies5110 it really is! Enjoy it when it arrives 🎉
Great review I ordered mine a week ago and expecting a wait of anywhere between 4 and 8 months for delivery here in Australia at the moment.
Thanks! Oh wow, hopefully more 4 months than 8, enjoy it when it arrives 👍🏻
Same boat.. ordered two weeks ago.. was told 6 months but who knows
@Epic Over Fifty How's your delivery goes? I waited for ordinary version for more less 3 months.
Ok, I’m at the end of your report now and let’s talk fuel economy. When I drive mine ‘enthusiastically’ I get more like 25mpg (certainly nowhere near 35). However, if I do motorway miles it’s pretty easy to get 50+mpg and you can still overtake easily). Your 35mpg is more likely to be its average total mpg.
I would also add that it’s got extremely good corner ‘bite’ and really amazingly resistant to understeer.
So on the day, I was doing some mix driving but I was driving ‘harder’ and it seemed to say my average was 35mpg…but I will say I wasn’t the only one driving the car that day
Just got one faking awesome
Awesome! Enjoy 👌🏻
I'm gonna get a call sometime this week to lick up my red i20n. Can't wait to drive like a hooligan!
I ordered mine in January, current estimate is end of June. The dealer said he could get me one by the end of February because there were three in the country, but that was a lie to stop me shopping elsewhere. Anyway the deal and partex were decent so I'm in the queue.
ah not great when a dealer is genuine, but good news on the deal! Enjoy it when it arrives
MUCH PREFER THE i20 N over the i30 N hands down 💯👍🏻👍🏻 I can’t wait to buy one but I won’t be in a position to do so for another 12 months or so , until then the reviews will keep my interest peeked! Great review 🤘🏻
I must admit I had a blast in the i20N! the i30N was good but, the i20N had something about it
Hi all, the i20N goes from 0-62 in 6.2 seconds, the same 0-62 as the Automatic Mini John Cooper Works! It's a properly quick car
You're actually right - it's 6.7s 0-100km/h (62mph) and 6.2s for 0-60mph. The big difference is because it tops out at 98km/h in 2nd and needs an extra gear change to 3rd.
I've had mine since January and loved every drive (even the boring daily commute!). Literally my only gripe is the tank size - I've got my average up to 40mpg, though if I really baby it I can finish a journey over 50mpg, but it still only takes 36L from near 0 range, which means I just about don't make 2 full weeks of commuting before having to fill up again.
The fact that Biermann has now retired means this could well be the last ICE-powered N car, too!
@@Jo3yPropane ah thanks Luke! I’ll change my comment! So on the tank, how many miles do you get out of a tank, on average?
@@LifeInMotionuk No worries, mate - Hyundai didn't do a very good job of making the distinction between the Euro and UK specs sheets... which is why a lot of us were confused why our cars didn't have BLIS (which is included on Euro cars)!
If I spend a decent amount of time in Sport or N Mode, i'm usually getting to 270-280 miles before the range is in single-digits and i'm getting nervous about what garages actually have fuel haha. A bit more tame with the right foot and 310-320 is probably the average. 335 miles is my absolute record, and that was with an average of 46.8mpg.
Ah okay, good to know!
Interesting mileage but yes, quite a small tank! I had a JCW that would see about 33mpg average and did around 340miles on a tank so not too dissimilar
@@Jo3yPropane I think you'll find that you can get 62 mph in second gear and switching off ESP will achieve the best time. Of course overall this does not matter on the road it is a fast car no doubt.
Would like to see a comparison with the non hybrid Suzuki swift sport, another vehicle that's more fun and faster than it's spec sheet suggests.
Would be an interesting comparison!
Good job... ;-)
This or a fiesta st ??
i really wanna like this car. it takes me back to smaller gti cars like I used to like growing up. But I can't find one to test drive, and I'm bit worried bout 2 things, rev hang and ride quality on my bad country roads. It does look nicer outside than the i30n
It’s 100% worth a test drive! That should answer your questions - personally, it rode nicely
I've been on two test drives in the i20N around town, slow roads, country roads, motorways, and I was allowed to drive how I wanted 🤪 I never noticed rev hang the ride its not a problem at all it's very comfortable seats are 100% brilliant
@@philliz2629 same experience I had. Local Dealer finally had a demo car and a freshly delivered example. I had a decent drive on a mix of roads. Impressed. Went back 2 days later and had another test drive in the heavy rain. Zero issues. Ordered that day. Took delivery the following week. Currently running in. 500 miles done. It's pure magic!
Great video I had a fiesta st with a diff I found the steering was strange as the it followed the road a lot what was the I 20 like with the diff ?
Thanks! The car drove very well. It had good feel to the road with very minimal torque steer. Perhaps a little light on the steering but that may be personal preference there
Your controversy opinion is reasonable. Just look at fiesta ST and Focus ST. Same feeling, different car.
Agreed!
I have one... Its amazing.... Talk to me about your experience with the lsd/wheel /tyre noise on the full lock, slow turnings.
All forums say its a known hyundai thing and made worse with the tyres that come as standard, but in no review has anyone ever mentioned this. Keen to get your thoughts.
Great to hear! I must admit it the driving on this day was done on mainly faster roads and so little slow turnings. Saying that, I did do some parallel parking and town driving and it I wouldn’t say it was any worse than my previous Mini JCW! I suspect it I had done more town driving, I’d be able to give you a better view
It is called the Ackermann effect , is how the suspension is tuned for better handling.
Many sport cars have this, also nothing to do with lsd
I found that with cold tyres/wet more prevalent
its not 6'7 tho what you talking about?
did not know Harry Potter reviews cars :D just kidding, good review mate
Some say I’m a wizard 😉 thanks mate!
Hey mhan just want to know is it possible that I can use small parts of this video ( to create a short?) - not using your face and words - just few seconds of interior and exterior ? Will obvisouly do a mention in the description.
Hi there - thanks for the comment. Please can you drop me an email :)
Matt from CarWow did 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds flat!
Better then i30 N and a lot of other hot hatches!!
I did enjoy the i20N more than the i30!
Just waiting for my delivery, ordered mine in performance blue, black roof, jbl speakers back in beginning of March...Brilliant video...why doesn't anyone know if it comes with blind spot mirrors 🤔😳
Very nice! Enjoy when it arrives 👌🏻 and re blind spot mirrors, I unfortunately can’t recall if it did! Worth a pop into the local dealer to see I think
I ordered mine in December of last year and still waiting for it! 😔
When I attend the Hyundai event, they did explain because they control a lot of the supply chain (including their own ships), their lead times should be better! However, these silicon chip shortages have hit everyone
@@LifeInMotionuk yeah I was told that about the chips. Just got to be patient 😌
Ordered mine in mid-Jan (blue with blue roof) with a promised delivery in March because they had three available in the country, but they vanished after I ordered it, so then they said delivery was promised in April, now June. I'm still waiting. I think the dealer was taking the .... by promising quick delivery to get my order, but I still want the car asap.
How about the suspension in normal or eco mode for daily use? it changes a lot in sport mode and n?
I think we'd all like to know that! I love everything about it but when he says it's not good as slow daily speeds that makes me nervous
No suspension change with modes. Fixed rate springs and dampers. Excellent compromise IMO
They look amazing but I kind of wish they didn't bother with the spoiler, each to their own, maybe would of been better ro have the spoiler as a cheap optional extra
Definitelt "eah to their own". I absolutely love the rear wing. Decided against the Black roof and think the wing and aerial look even better as contrast
This is the car tp get performs like a bit of a lunatic but fuel consumption not that bad either.
wonder how it is compared to my jcw gp2. figures are more or less the same
Nice video. What watch are you wearing ?
Thanks! That’s my Tag Aquaracer - a favourite watch
Carwow did 6 flat in the i20n
Do you prefer this or latest fiesta st?
I’ve not driven the ST, however looks alone I prefer this!
This or the fiesta ST I can't choose
I want to get behind the wheel of an ST - have you driven both?
@@LifeInMotionuk noo not yet, been waiting to try out both cars, but I can't choose from what I've heard they are both good
I’d say it will come down to the test drive!
I’d say it will come down to the test drive!
Good car but when the tyres are cold it tyre hops. No one seems to mention this.
Didn’t notice this, but good spot
This isn't just an i20N issue. Let the tyres and the rest of the car warm up a bit before 'giving it the beans'. Simples! 😇
In a straight line, it wouldn't know which way a jcw went.
Europe gets all the best cars
Maybe I can afford one after 3 years of depreciation
Good plan! Prices seem a bit all over- fantastic car
why are you wearing a cap for a review - it aint sunny
You need to slow down. You are speaking too fast and sometimes it is unintelligible.
