  • Join me on an epic and heartbreaking journey with my RC B-58 Hustler in this comprehensive build & flight video! You'll laugh (maybe), you'll cry (definitely) and maybe pick up a tip or two in the process of building and flying this iconic supersonic bomber. I do wish that this project had ended differently, but unfortunately mistakes do happen even to the best of us (I can only blame myself for the crash)...but I WILL build another one and I will NOT repeat the same mistake! A big thank you to Brian Smith for helping video and John Pryor, his son, and everyone at the airport for their search and rescue operations!
    Model Specifications:
    RC B-58 Hustler
    Scale: 1/15
    Wingspan: 46"
    Total weight: 20.75lb
    EDFs: 4xSchubeler DS-30-AXI HDS (69mm)
The model is all hollow-molded fiberglass from a limited edition Jet Hangar Hobbies kit with scale retracts from RCCrafters. Servos are all Hitec using a Spektrum iX20 radio system.

I love RC. I switched to ground vehicles because i would build for months and fly for one minute. MAYBE! Now i use the TV and a game controller. Still got the rc's, but all the planes were recycled into tooth picks long ago

What an amazing build too... I'd be willing to bet they were Castle ESCs... I had this happen the first and last time I tried them. Only Hobbywing from then on and have never had another ESC failure in 10 years. Never again...

Brother, My heart was broken for you. Guttered.
That was one absolutely gorgeous model of a very beautiful aircraft. Your work is on another level!!!
Amazing attention to detail, and weirdly enough, a lot of the painstaking care you took especially with the gear doors I can empathise. Personally I would have been...Far too afraid to fly it.
I built a HET F-4 Phantom II back in 2004-2006. It didn't have any gear at all. It's custom machined air retracts were in a very shallow wing so I had to shape the gear doors much like you did. Had bulges in the strut doors for clearance. Inner doors which were shaped aswell, were servo operated as was the nose gear door. The entire build took two years. Under the model when stowed the gear and doors were nearly perfectly flush and countless cycles on them before flight they worked wonderfully...Air retracts tend to slam a bit lol.
The doors were on a sequencer back then. The detail I added to the thing (no weathering) was my finest work ever on a balsa/ply model.
It flew once...poorly. When I mean poorly, it needed up elevator the whole time. C of G was good and all.
Wasn't a full flying stab. The elevators were too small.
It was very fast though. Twin HET 6904's with 2W20 motors running at the time the best Lipos I could buy.
The incidence between the wing and horizontal stab were way out.
I got it home barely and has sit ever since as an ornament. One day I'll get servoless retracts and rebuild the tail but these days... The Freewing F-4 is just better.....easier.
    Now I just fly foamies.
I do hope you rebuild the B-58. It's an epic aircraft and you did it perfect justice. Jaw dropping model.
BTW I love your centre burners!!! Mine is still going strong 5 years later!!
    Cheers from Australia!

That drag chute rig was super cool, man. Great video. Thanks for sharing this journey with us. I actually feel a lot better about my "re-maidens" after I've done some rudimentary rattle can job on one of my foamies- and how jittery i get because of the "work" i put in. 😊

Oh my, I’m sorry for your loss. But if you are anything like me you love the building of an aircraft just as much or more than flying them. I’m blown away that you don’t have a inline voltage meter and didn’t oversize the ESCs by 10-20%. Love ❤️ your content

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  10 місяців тому +1

I normally go for extra headroom on the esc’s, but allowed my concern for the airframe weight to dictate a slightly smaller esc here that I thought still had headroom, just not as much as I normally go for…which as it turned out was a mistake… 😕
