  • In Gran Canaria we also have a Way of St. James. In this case, it is a track that crosses the entire island from Maspalomas to what was the first capital of Gran Canaria: the city of Gáldar or Agáldar. Here is the main temple of Santiago de Los Caballeros where the route ends. The whole way is about 66 kilometers, but it is recommended to do it in 3 stages.
In this video we show you stage 1 of the Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria from the Maspalomas Lighthouse to the town of Tunte, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The first stage is 28 kilometers long and has a little more than 1,200 meters of positive elevation gain. During this stage we will pass through the following points of interest: Maspalomas Lighthouse, Maspalomas Oasis, Fataga Ravine, Arteara Necropolis and its town, Valley of the Thousand Palms, Fataga and Tunte. We recommend bringing at least 2 liters of water per person and enough food to last so long walking (at least 22 kilometers along a ravine without services). It is essential to wear a hat and sun protection, it is important to protect your face, neck, arms and legs with cream. If you can wear light clothes better. At the same time, the lighter the backpack, the less your back will hurt. Footwear must be suitable for hiking and we recommend compression mid-leg socks.
The estimated duration of the route is 7-8 hours, depending on your physical condition and the number of hours you stop to rest. We were on the move for 6:15 am, but with the video recording and the stop to eat in Fataga (1h and a half for lunch), it was extended to 9 hours.
