The musicians in Mae's dreams are real people, or were. They were called the Deep Hollow Hollerers. They made bandstands in the woods and went there to play at night for ghosts wandering through the woods. They had the ability to astral project. One winter night they were out playing and froze to death while they were astral projecting, so now their souls wander the astral plane forever, still playing music for any wandering souls.

27:50 I just realized that you could probably easily fit the main characters into a standard four-man adventuring party. Not surprising I guess as it's entirely possible that was intentional. Mae is the fighter (affinity for blunt weapons and breaking things with them), Gregg is the rogue (caries around knives and crossbows and enjoys committing crimes), Bea is the mage (smart and mature beyond her years), and Angus is the healer (always calm and makes everyone feel better).
...Now I really kind of want to see fan art of them in those roles.

@Hutton Saunders '22 I'm aware of that but that's not what I'm talking about, things can take inspiration from multiple things at once and considering Night in the Woods has a literal RPG built into it I would find it *very* strange if they were ignorant of basic RPG tropes. Especially since the whole Fighter/Mage/Thief thing (with optional Healer forth option) is a really common characterization gimmick, even in things completely unrelated to RPGs (try it out on other things, you might surprise yourself!).

So Jack missed an article in the library scene last episode which explains SO MUCH about Mae called "Underground Gases Afflict Many". I'll put it the important stuff from the article here:
"The houses of Larch St. have been evacuated after the discovery of gas buildup in the basements was found to have led to hallucinations in scattered members of the house holds. For the past several weeks residents have been complaining of family members who have been hearing voices or seeing things that were not there. [An old women was having animated conversations with an empty because she was seeing her dead sister and a boy drowned him self in the lake after continuously hearing a song that no one else heard.]... Reasidents [requested] help from officials to see if this is related to Saint Luven's Lantern, a phenomenon where exposure to certain underground gases leads certain victims to experience waking dreams, auditory hallucinations, and the sense of unseen presences. Preliminary test show that gas is present in the homes."
I think this means that Mae is imagining the ghost and the fact that everyone is some sort of animal, but that's just my theory right now.

You know I always kind of thought of the characters as different mental disorders. Angus is Anxiety, he is definitely not ready to make confrontation or interaction on his own. Bea is depression, one of the stages of grief or loss. Gregg is ADHD, always off the wall and can't sit still. Then there's Mae, it has been made known that she has some anger issues but it seems to me that she is sometimes paranoid especially with the whole nightmare eyes thing. She might see the world in a different light. Maybe this causes her to act out. Anyway this is only my take on things. I haven't finished the series yet so I might be a little uneducated. P.S. It seems to me that the characters balance each other out. Gregg has Angus who calms his nerves and Angus can be at a party as long as he is with Gregg. Bea seems to have shown more emotion with Mae, likewise Bea keeps Mae down to earth. I would like to think its intentional and that the actually are fixing each other. Feel free to share your opinion.🙂

Just in case you haven't already recorded the next video for this series: please explore possum drop with Angus before you investigate the historical society with Greg. Greg's adventure will advance the storyline and you'll miss out on learning a lot about Angus.
Rachel Rentschler in my playthrough, it was Bea's adventure that progressed the story line. i think it its whoever's adventure you go on second.
Well, there's me not paying attention (come to think of I did play Greg's adventure second both play throughs). That being said I still hope he chooses Angus's adventure, as fun as Greg's was, Angus's has so much character development that Jack has missed out on.
And not to mention that there are so many other alternative storylines you can take. I just started replaying it for the third time only to realize you could go an adventure with Mae's mom. I guess this is one of times my impatience with an uploading schedule paid off; if it wasn't for the fact there is so much time between uploads I wouldn't have cracked and played this game myself.

I was just about to say that, Jack, especially with the burst of light accompanied with each boom.
I know this is so SO late but the band members were alive at one point. They used music to astral project and help wandering ghosts keep company, but they died when they got frozen to death, so maybe in return, the ghosts are helping out wherever their spirits are. Theory:
So from playing the game myself and reading other comments,, when the cat god is talking to you he mentions a creature “climbing into the sky and making a tear with its *hooves*” what I think he means by that is that the black goat/evil god made a tear in realities/dimensions. So everytime you sleep and have “nightmares” it’s actually you/Mae going into that dimension. The god you’re talking to also mentions that it’s going to “close the tear” after telling you that you “shouldn’t wander too far out into sea or you won’t come back” and after this “dream” you don’t have anymore.
So to sum that up..
The black goat god made a tear between dimensions which you keep leaking into everytime you fall asleep and eventually run into one of the other gods which tells you you need to stop before you go too far and never come back who then closes the tear to keep you from traveling between dimensions
This is just my theory sorry if that’s all over the place I just wanted to get that out hshsa
