    When I was taking drum lessons, I held my sticks like Pete DeFreitas does in this video (palms facing towards each other) and my instructor quickly told me that is NOT the proper way to hold them -- I should be holding them with palms facing down. Other drummers I know also rebuked me for playing that way. And yet, Pete DeFreitas got the job done with more style, and all those drummers aren't being watched 35 years later.

    Wahey! Recorded this when it was aired, on a crappy tape recorder with mic held up to telly. Went mental when my mum pushed open my bedroom door with a load creak right at the end & me going Shush! Sounds weird without them sound effects.

    Just relish every discovery as if it were your first - or last. :) Art is an endless resource and none of us, fortunately, will ever be able to say "I've seen/heard it all", so we're all doomed to be frustrated somehow. :)
    Oh, and if I may suggest - and just in case you still haven't heard them - don't miss out on Arcade Fire. They are one of those bands that makes you go "Why haven't I found about them before?". They're great.

    How about Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of "People are strange" originally by the Doors? They did it for the "Lost Boys" soundtrack.

      This was transferred from an ancient VHS tape. I probably cut it early because it had some interference or bad tracking lines on the picture for the remainder of the song.

    Looking for a reply from someone who lived through the era: How popular were E&BM in the "new wave" scene?

    • @ninetyminutestd
      @ninetyminutestd 6 років тому +3

      I started getting into the new wave/alternative rock scene in 1987 so was just around for the last EATB album. From the US perspective in SoCal, they were definitely very well-known within the new wave scene but was just short of the level of the Cure, Smiths, Depeche Mode and New Order by the late 80's. I think it also reflects their relative obscurity now while DM and the Cure are still playing arenas. NO and Morrissey also do well on tours now. And of course EATB took a decade-long break while bands like DM and the Cure carried on building and reinforcing their fanbases. EATB also lost their drummer to a bike accident. I also think their music wasn't quite pop enough to get them up the charts--aside from Lips like Sugar. That was their biggest US hit but McCulloch quit the band (he also hated the 5th album claiming it was a sellout but then released a solo album that was just as middle of the road and bland--but that's another story...). The Cure had some very non-commercial songs, but Robert Smith also managed a "A friday I'm in love " or "Just like heaven" to keep the casual fans interested. Don't think McCulloch and company had the pop song skills to write those types of hits.
      For numerical context, in Los Angeles in 1988 they played 2 nights at the Universal Amphitheatre. Those were the last shows as the original quartet in LA. The UA seats about 6,000. Depeche Mode would play in the Rose Bowl in 1988 and 2 shows at Dodger Stadium in 1990. NO has headlined at Irvine Meadows and Hollywood Bowl which both hold more than 10,000. EATB in 1986 did co-headline in Irvine with NO.
      I wasn't around for most of their career, but my understanding is they were tipped to be the next big thing but weren't able to cross over to the mega mainstream like U2 did. They also didn't quite achieve the widespread popularity in the alternative scene like DM and the Cure--but these two are probably the biggest achievers within the scene. Really big but never really Top 40 mainstays. So if the Cure and DM were A-list, then EATB were solidly B to B+.
      I wonder if EATB would have broken through if McCulloch hadn't left and de Frietas hadn't died. I liked the Grey Album at the time, but it's clear, comparing it to their previous albums, they had reached a plateau. The songs and production are very pedestrian and devoid of much pep. So even if they had carried on, maybe it wouldn't have mattered. Unless they were especially inspired, it's likely they would have continued on the downward trend. They had a good 10 year run--they didn't break through to the top but they had a hell of a career. I'm currently getting back into their music again and a part of me regrets missing out their prime in the early to mid 80's. I would have loved to hear McCulloch live in his prime with EATB. I saw his solo tour but it wasn't the same.
      Anyhow, that's my take on it. It will be interesting to hear from others who lived through that time, especially those who were in the scene in the early 80's. I can't believe that whole period was more than 30 years ago--how time flies.

      @SMHS28 6 років тому

      Thank you for the awesome reply! I wonder if they wanted to go "mainstream". Maybe they didn't want to do a pop hit-- for art's sake. Who really knows. They put out a great album in the early 2000's: I believe it's called "Flowers". Definitely a more mature sound with interesting lyrical choices...and the lead singer's voice is incredible. At any rate, thank you for the interesting read.

      I was in college back in the mid 80s and they were very popular on college radio but not pop radio stations. One of my fav groups of the 80s, it was a great time to be alive.

      I agree with your post, Ninety. I rarely heard this song, remembered thinking at the time, WHO IS T H A T!? But I think it was Lips Like Sugar that got my attention. This one though, is the bomb-...just an incredibly sexy groove--that baseline, the lead guitar, the drums, the synth...and Ian's voice. Just love it! Then Killing Moon and Bring on the Dancing Horses---but I don't remember hearing these songs or of EATB until maybe late eighties and into the mid-nineties where they got a good bit of airplay on our Alt rock station back then, in the Phoenix area. When I learned their big songs were from the earlier '80's, it surprised me because the station we had back then was always bringing in new music, new acts, so have no idea why or how I could have missed them until later---had my radio going a long time daily. Maybe they were ahead of their time. Around the same time, DM, New Order, The Church, Yaz and Erasure were also getting airplay. I know this station was also getting into that chill- new-age, sleepy instrumental and Windom Hill stuff back in the later '80's, too...so maybe it just ate up airtime. Too bad. I also know that many of the alt rock, new wave 'purists' didn't appreciate drum machines and anything that didn't sound 'authentic' like your average rock band, I guess. Am so glad that there are still many of us out there that love this music that seemed a bit foreign to some back then. Even some younger people who weren't even born yet like it now.
