They're really going about this "strategic competition" the wrong way. Think about how China was able to rapidly develop its technology through the purchase of foreign made equipment. Given the U.S dollar strength they could co-operate with China by building 21st century infrastructure which could benefit and make their manufacturing industries more competitive. Even if manufacturing returns to the U.S the problem is the country doesn't have enough workers to fill those jobs so it'll end hiring foreigners anyways. So it's really a self defeating policy. The U.S is just stifling its growth and innovation by pursuing this level of trade protectionism.

Trump's and now BIDEN'S Chinese tariffs cost the typical American family between $900 to $1,200 ANNUALLY!
We can expect massive Chinese sanctions and more tariffs as we approach the election.
This WILL cost Americans to the point where more families cannot afford daily essentials.
This includes increased food cost - some food comes from China.
It means your medicine will increase in price because most medicines use chemicals from China... On and on...

Nearly a decade of my life preparing for and working in electrical construction and being told the made in China materials was going to be new economic cooperation. Those old timers protesting the manufacturing overseas tried to warn us apprentices. At least I got to help build a few hospitals and schools etc. I had some crazy experiences with some protestors though. Our phones got hacked and deleted at the school once. The school got hacked and the instructors accused the class. A protestor stood up and said something like 'it's time we occupy democracy!'. I remember the instructor calling him an idiot as they tried to convince us to join the protest arguing that continuing to work (in construction) only supported oppression. Half of us didn't take them seriously. Long story short, instead of a world class license I got awful sick with an immune disorder and just the other day I realized my phone along with a few of us were HTC phones which got banned a few months later! What a job, what a job.

The urge to keep on top will be American biggest mistake
The US has 34 Trillion dollars Debt already... The dollar is getting more and more scrutiny, to the point the countries in global south are actively seeking alternatives (As much the Interest rates in the US keep higher, more ALL OTHER countries suffer, because we need to keep our rates higher too to counter the dollar price).
Now, the Global south is simply choosing Huawei, Xiaomi, BYD, Solar Panels and so on
Here in Brazil, my Modem Wifi 6E and all Home IoT are Huawei, my smartphone Xiaomi, I see more and more BYD in the streets (and I want one hehe), Probably my solar panels will be Chinese too ... Resuming, this aggressive discourse that "China is bad" just don't sticks ... To be sincere I'm more worried about American companies and the NSA 😂 (they already spied on Brazilian Companies and Gov. ) .. and as more the US push China away and bully Chinese companies, I feel more "sympathy", because I research if what American gov. says is true... and it's not... And I think they are doing this to China Today, tomorrow will be MY COUNTRY.

Not so easy. Most of the non-western world is basically the 3rd world, not a lucrative market for anyone at all. So, the idea is - to deny China access from the most lucrative market and chock their economic growth.
Don't get fooled by the GDP figures. Being from one of those 3rd world - I assure you, the biggest problem these nations has is - they don't have institutions, they don't have infrastrucure, they don't have any ecosystem at all, and are rabidly corrupted to the brim on top of that. There's no way they can build the asset class, or the necessary infrastructure to become a lucrative market anytime soon. On the retrospect, some of these 3rd world nations might get a good boost to become a developed economy and a lucrative market in a few decades.

There is a mistaken assumption that America outsources to China because everything is cheap here, but the reality is that many of the commodities, vital components, machinery, skills, and technologies available in China are only found here. If you remove China as a supplier, your whole "American" business model falls apart. Just ask Bezos, Elon, Walmart, Disney, and every single hardware or tech company out there.
Despite what these delusional warmongers say, both countries are dependent on each other. Honestly, I see China as bound to win this challenge, as the U.S. has become a deindustrialized nation. Just because China is having a good economy right now does not mean that most people in the world know the names of Chinese brands more than Japan. It may have Made in China on it but that doesn't mean that specific brand is a Chinese brand. It's like saying Samsung is a Chinese brand just because there's a Made in China on Samsung products.
You Chinese are getting cocky day by day even though the foundation of China to become powerful in the tech industry was copying and stealing from other countries. I remember a lot of Chinese companies copying and stealing from Japan IPs in 1980's. For example, TDK sued TCL for intellectual property violation in 1985. Most of the Chinese things are copies of Japanese concepts, designs, styles including video games, animation, comics, cars, electronics, bullet trains, and etc.

If its bound by physical principles then nothing can prevent China from catching up if the US firms became lazy. Apple and Tesla cannot just take it for granted that they are going to enjoy the high profit forever. If China makes equivalent performance but a bit less elegant and compacted, yet equally reliable , for a cheaper price, people will buy it. Chips are small enough nowadays a lot of product can afford to have more than one. China also look into enhancing the experience American firms often choose to lower for the customers because they want to increase profits because lack of competition.
It is sad that great companies that were innovative once gained enough ground becomes protective and just want to win the game by containing competitors.

Nominal GDP comparisons are stupid. There are no universal prices for goods and services. So a normalization procedure is required and that is know as purchasing power parity (PPP). The real (PPP) GDP of China is larger than that of the USA.

Could this POSSIBLY be related to the law which is going to be (already has been??) passed which demands that ANY US citizen or company who owns and/or controls any telecommunications equipment is required to assist NSA in spying on anybody NSA tells them to help them spy on, and they don't need a court order to demand this, and you aren't allowed to tell anybody else that NSA has made this demand of you? I think POSSIBLY China knows that NSA will (if they didn't already) demand that Intel, AMD and all other US manufacturers of telecommunications equipment help NSA to spy on China and a whole host of other countries and companies.

x86 (Intel 64 & AMD 64) are going out of fashion. The new trend is RISC-V 64.
Almost every IT company worth a dime are investing into developing their own RISC-V chip; and those not investing into RISC-V, are buying ARM chip designs. Eg: Apple, Huawei, Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, etc. ARM is a commercial fork of RISC chip.
With GPUs prices skyrocketing after 2019, building Desktop Computer is a hobby that only millionaires can afford. As for Laptops, Palmtops, Wristops, & VR headsets, look forward to a world of RISC-V64 & ARM64. X86 architecture that Intel & AMD dominates, will slowly become obsolete.

Technology is the great equalizer. Between races, between gender, in some instances, even between income levels. This is why government comes in heavy handed to manipulate it to shore up the positions of the Ownership Class. Name one major technological development (that didn't come from DARPA taxpayer spending) in the last 30 years.
