Wire in the air. Up high in the signal and out of the noise. Any wire will do. Looks good and I bet it works good too. I use old TV 75ohm coax for a feedline. Just hook the center wire to the antenna wire like you did and then ground the shielding braid at the radio end to keep your household electrical noise out of your signal. You can usually find it for free.
Another thing you can do if your radio doesn't have an antenna jack or connecter is wrap a few turns of the feed line around the radio and it will inductively couple with the radio. He's right about the steel roof, it's almost like being in a Faraday cage.

I does work good. Obviously best when propagation is good.
