The military cemetery in Vossenack is in a terrible state of neglect. I wonder if this is a deliberate act of the current German authorities, a perverse way of criminalising their own fallen soldiers.
Danke für diesen informativen Beitrag zu diesen fragwürdigen historischen Ereignissen. Aber die Hintergrundmusik ist so was von voll daneben, einfach nur peinlich.
Just like with Pacific Island of Pelelieu , which was to cover General McArthurs (I think) right flank , as he invaded the Phillipines , The Hurtgen Forrest should of been by passed ! These two objectives weren't of any importance except it's cost in lives Axis , Allied. The Hurtgen could of been skipped ,but the USA forces wanted to be macho , and paid for it in nearly 28- 34,000 losses , as did The Nazis too. Nothing was signicantly gained by trying to flush out the Wehrmacht that was very adroitly hunkered in well emplaced defensive positions , and the Same went for Pelelieu . Both operations began in early 9/1944 , with the Hurtgen going on a few mos. more. Casualties were heavy for the USA in both operations , on both sides of the world. The Hurtgen campaign was not meticulously looked @ , and studied. Not one higher up came to Evan take a sneak peek at the situation on Hurtgen , nor on Pelelieu. But our industrial might , and gutsy troops prevailed. In Hurtgen the Americans had @ least 7 well trained IDs fed piecemeal , and were mauled. It was a near blunder. And, there were others around that time. General Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery's Operation Market Garden ( my grandpa was in that w/ the 82nd Airborne Division), the Walcheren Islands around the Dutch/ Belgian Coasts , The Battle For Aachen 9/1944, General Patton getting a bloody nose @ The Battle For Metz around mid- 9/1944, General Patch's 7th Army struggling in The Vosges Mtn's, , and the Pelelieu , Phillipines, and Saipan campaigns , which were bloody. The Allies would prevail due to its manpower and industrial might!
Very decent of the German people to remember both their own and the American losses too.Very decent.
The music played on the background is very misplaced. The battle of the Hürtgenwald was not a very happy event was it? Then why play this happy music?
Modern Germany is all about Americanized entertainment. They have moved on from the war.
I wouldn't want to be camping out in those big deep green hills, and putting up with the elements, NO WAY, orders are orders!
