- I filmed this video at the beginning of December, and debated whether or not to post it. We first met this kid when we were sitting, eating breakfast in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. After talking to him and learning about his story, I decided I wanted to take him shopping for clothes and treat him to some food. We returned the next day, but I quickly realized we were perhaps in over our heads, as it quickly went from an innocent video of shopping, to a video about substance abuse, domestic violence, police violence, and the dark side of humanity, or lack thereof. I wasn't sure if it was right to post the video, but after a lot of consideration, I decided it is only fair to the homeless community, as well as to you as viewers, to see this dark reality. Filming videos isn't all fun and games, and you all deserve to see both the good and bad sides. Please share, and I hope you learned something from this video, as I did experiencing it.

Just a few notes about the video. Of course everyone will have their own opinions, but being the person who filmed the video and was there talking to the kid for hours, I’d like to give some context:
1. The boy did not ask us for anything the first day except food. He didn’t want money, didn’t want anything. Just a paratha for breakfast. I told him to sit down with us and he told us his story. Then he left. That was it.
2. He wasn’t ungrateful at the end, but he was certainly probably addicted to drugs. I don’t think he was lying at heart, he knows his problems but when you’re addicted and stuck in that situation it’s basically impossible to get out.
3. Yes I agree, this is not the best way to help out homeless people or people in a similar situation. It doesn’t solve anything. Perhaps I was tricked, perhaps I wasn’t, we’ll never know. However, that is not the value of this video. The content filmed in the video will be seen by thousands of people, which can teach them something about the world, and allow them to make a difference in the future. That is the value of this, not so much what exactly I did.

Not here defending what that police officer did but the issue here is that a great proportion of the beggars and specifically children (especially in Karachi) are stuck in this endless loop of drug abuse and the Government hasn't done anything to properly deal with this issue.
Drug abuse is Pakistan has been severe ever since the 70's (all coming from Afghanistan) and it has become a norm for the law enforcement to be very strict with beggars (just like in the video), I've witnessed this myself many times
If the awareness generated through this video can make us and the Government do something about the issue, it'll be good for us in the long term
@Chris Lewis dear Chris, what you did was out of humanity and empathy. But see the boy was a begger, he was clearly asking money from you maybe for drugs. Google and see that there are so many wonderful shelter homes in Pakistan for orphans and children. Government and private both. But many children love free life and they avoid shelter homes and organised life. Still staff is always on search for such children and urge them to get enrolled there. So it is normally discouraged to give money to begger boys and men because they only use it for drugs.( Old people, women, disabled people are exception coz they can't earn for themselves). Don't worry , human welfare organizations will take care of him if he s interested.
Chris I only want to say that beggers are present in every country .by the way it was police men's job to make u safe from beggers .some beggers are well experienced as u know .so u also did good .
You treated him like a human being. If this boy had cancer & was homeless no one would say one word about you giving him help, but because he may have addiction issues, all of a sudden he's unworthy of food & clothes and shelter? Chris, as an advocate for unhoused people in So Cal, you did the right thing!

In the end when he asked for money, that literally broke my heart. After all the things he got from you, he couldn't hold himself from asking for money. That addiction of drugs had made it all hopeless for him. You could see a light in his eyes in the starting but when he was bullied again, he realized there is no place for him in the society and the only thing that makes his life easier is drugs. What a vicious cycle!
That is absolute true. You could see those tears in his eyes at the start were real. I hope he gets right help or break free from this vicious cycle.
Its amazing how some people expect this boy to be upright and not worthy of help. I respect this kid for surviving each day with courage, my son who is same age as him would not survive even a week in his position.

Life on the streets is extremely tough. Drugs gives these kids some relief momentarily. A street kid once told me, "Zindagi jhand ho gayi hai". It was a young kid and it broke my heart. He was a rag-picker run away from home because his Dad beat him up. It was almost 20 years ago, but I still remember that fellow's face. I wanted to do something for him at that point, but life is a struggle and I have not done anything to change the lot of such kids.
He is shamelessly asking for money at the end. Why can't he just study and earn money??
That was a tough call Chris, there was no right or wrong thing to do in that situation, but posting the vid was the right thing to do, making people aware can only be a good thing

First of all huge respect for you guys, for helping the homeless kid. And if he's a drug addict, in my opinion this is not his fault. It's because of the society who never accepted him when he became an orphan in the age of 10. His parents relatives could have adopted him but they didn't and if there are no relatives then their neighbors could have adopted him but they didn't. But if someone adopted him at that time he must be having a good life now. But you did very well helping him. So hates of to you guys. And keep helping the poor people.
It's actually more of a fault of the people bringing and selling the drugs, these dealers specifically target vulnerable children making them regular customers and a permanent source of income for themselves
This isn't exclusive only to Pakistan, I bet it happens to an extent in the US as well

Drugs n alcohol make them commit crimes too .
Kids being abused beaten killed under influence of alcohol police tries to control but shops sell alcohol in foreign countries as its ok there.
If cris think this kid true cris had smart phone he could hv called for helpline cris could hv searched on his mob nearest police station or orphanage, but no he went back sitting in his country n showing this kid he made this kid public, foreign law not allow kid photographs or videos, schools even stop parents coz law stops kids picture in social media.
You can't put the blame on relatives or neighbors to adopt an orphan, the state should have a system in place to look after such kids, unfortunately in our country including our neighboring countries such kids ends up living on the street !!!
Even if he is a Heroin Addict, you still did a great thing. Your intentions were noble and great, and it's informative. It's not like we're not allowed to do good things for someone who is an addict either. We definitely can. It's just an added issue that he isn't thankful at the end, that's really the irritation, but everything else was good.

You did the right thing,by giving him food and buying him warm clothes and shoes and not given him money for drugs.
Well, as you can clearly see he wasn’t thankful at all, he wanted money at the end of the day when he was asking for 200 or 300 rupees. Meaning he wanted money for drugs now what the kid is gonna do is sell the stuff that you gave him for drugs. Chris should’ve not give the kid anything at all maybe food that’s it.

My heart hurts to see a child without a mother. To lose his parents and then have to cope with grief and fear while he struggles to survive every waking moment... The real blessing in the experience was reminding this little boy that there are people in the world who still see him, and care about him. When you're homeless you're either invisible or a problem - you showed him he was neither. ❤️

We do have a lot of these drug addicts here. Drug addiction made them hopeless. Its a good thing you do. Let Allah decide how the people really are. He's a kid & maybe he's misguided. You just help a kid who's homeless. Stay blessed brother. Respect for you ❤

Brother, of course he’s been misguided. This is a societal issue- we can’t pin it on the individual. It takes a community to raise a child and this poor kid doesn’t even have parents. On judgement it will be society that has failed him not the kid himself

That's the reality of world and it is not only about pakistan but it is about the whole world. The problem is all round the world . Drug dealers use kids to sell drugs especially kid’s who have no parents or have run away from home because of abuse

You did the right thing- unquestionably. The alternative was to deny a 17 year old BOY warm clothes and food. If it were me, I would have stood up to those bullies and demanded a bystander telephone the police. Pakistan ratified the UNCRC in 1990, so the authorities were required in law to support you in supporting him. That 'Police Officer' was out of control and failed in his duty of care. In addition, Pakistan banned corporal punishment of CHILDREN in February 2021, so he also assaulted the CHILD. Notwithstanding this, the authorities are required to support him until he is 18; therefore, you could have been a voice for him to access support during this short window until he is 18. He was obviously a CHILD self medicating with Heroin and I really felt for him. Next time, DON'T DOUBT YOURSELF! Ps: If you want to bring about change for the Homeless Community and highlight CHILDREN's RIGHTS, then you should unmask that 'Police Officer'. PPs; I am unimpressed by the lack of humanity in the comments section.

I agree wholeheartedly. The comments "this isn't how you help homeless people" are killing me. This is exactly how you help them! They are hungry, you feed them! They are houseless, give them shelter! Yes, they may have mental health issues & addictions. But would you treat someone needy with cancer any differently?
@@msmendes214 As my friend Matthew (25:31-40) said, "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, "I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me"; addiction is a prison. I'm not surprise that a 10 year old boy sought refuge from his emotional pain in Heroin. Frankly, I find people in the comments section to be part of this child's problem and for that reason we see him at 17 years of age in crisis in the vlog.

That's very nice of you, and i understand him ASKING for money, and i even understand IF he lied about that guy who said he tried to help. But the very moment (at the end of the video) where he started trying to shame you into giving him money after you said no shows that he wasn't grateful and was only ever after drug money in the first place
This is every day reality. There comes a time when there's so many people you've met or know in this state that even helping them becomes impossible for a single person. Props for doing what you did, if it'll change his entire life I'm not sure, but this was definitely a less seen side of things that should be known.

But one Thing You’re trying so hard to help this kid out but you’re helping a person who doesn’t want to be helped. Probably he was grateful for the clothes and shoes but he clearly did not WANT those things. All he wanted from you both was money to pay for his addiction which is heroine. You tried. And I LOVE that you did not give in to his beggery. You gave him NECESSITIES and when he asked for money I loved that you said no. Thankyou for helping but not helping his addiction. I have never watched a vlogger so down to earth and caring. This is an amazingly valuable video. Besides the boy's life you have shown to the world how the local Police behaves.
Basically Chris, the people such as the officer and the others are already aware of the reality for these kids, and what the kid was all about. That's why they reacted that way, still unjustified I think, because it is still just a little kid at the end of the day. But you can see at the end how unthankful he was for all you had already gotten him, so unfortunately your kindness didn't do much for his chadacter. Hopefully one day he will realise, but you did all you could. The rest is on the boy now to change his ways.

@@Freemindinc brother don't do that. You don't know anything about me. I've actually struggles with drug addiction (not heroin, alhumdulilah) from the age of 17 years old. I'm all for compassion, but, I promise you heir are other dug addicted little kids in Pakistan who would have been happy with what they where given and wouldn't have expected more. This little kid, may allah help him, unfortunately just isn't built like that. He tried to squeeze even more from the people who owed him nothing but where simply helping him. To Tey and argue that he was justified in asking for more money, for 'medicine' mind you... I'm happy Chris didn't give him any money and neither would neither would i have. If you would that's good for you but personally that's not a good decision. Don't start attacking my character though, that's not right.

His just a child. Addicted to the most addictive drug in the world. Heroin is a terrible drug even for adults to come off is hard. He just needs the right support and someone he can trust. His a child and is all alone and scared.

Chris and Max, this video is your all-time best. If I could, I would nominate it for an Academy Award. Wow! I'm a former E/BD teacher and have dealt with kids with these issues for years in the US until I had to throw in the towel because everything we were doing was wrong. It's a global problem. Additionally, it is what made me leave religion because if some sky-fairy was allowing this boy to be sacrificed like this by the hands of justice then they were not worth worshipping. I dont believe in any particular religion but I do believe in a higher being that isn't contained by 3 dimensions (meaning I believe there are things outside of the universe that are also "reality"), religion to me is just indoctrination mostly.
My question is, if there was a god what would you expect the world to look like? Absolute harmon? I dont like the argument that "bad things happen therefore god isn't real", because bad and good are subjective human emotions. There is no intrinsic bad or good, there is just your specific interpretation of it. Just curious to how you would imagine a world with a "god", does it have to conform to your idea of "good and bad" ? And if mine idea of good and bad is different to your idea of it how would we share the same reality if there was a god ?

You feeded a hungry person not only but also bought cloths and shoes for him. You did what you were supposed to do, it is good to help humanity.

"Get his act together" is probably harsh. Most homelessness is not due self imposed reasons

Wish I could talk with you and explain to you in detail the nuances at the core of that boys story.
There are shelters, places even religious schools that will take children such as that boy. They would feed him, cloth him and educate him.
When the kid say that children are abducted and them forced to beg on streets, that is true but not in his case. He doesn't need abduction, he is there for an easy picking. So, basically if anyone wanted to make him a cripple in order to force him to beg for money then there was no family member of this boy stopping them.
There are details that need to be looked into. Regardless, you guys have hearts of Gold.

I have worked with homeless and deprived kids/adults both in Karachi and London. In my experience, majority of them are damaged beyond repair. The streets and drugs turn them into this selfish and deceptive beings that it is hard to understand the reality.
Good for you, you didn't give the boy any money, either his handlers would take it off him or he himself would blow it in drugs.

He might be on the wrong path since there is nobody to guide him but you helped him out and sent out a message across the world to help those who are around us incase if they need our help and show some compassion. To be a heroin addict would not have been his choice and the system does not work for children like him. Change is possible but with lots of perseverance, funding, early intervention and expertise. The abuse, cruelty and discrimination just drives these unfortunates into criminality. You guys have done a great thing in highlighting the issue. Pakistanis are reknowned for their kindness to tourists and guests but are not always so great on showing this to people they do not hold in high regard
Well there are too many drug addicts around every city and i think there is no such facility organization or rehabilitation center for that many drug addicts. Here people are baffled that if they should financially help these people, as they don't spend that money on food or clothing but to buy syringes, drugs and lay down besides train tracks. You would notice in Pakistan if someone gives money to the drug addict then someone would tell you not to give money to a drug addict but to do charity to people who are poor but not drug addicts.
At last they are the people without social status and like an alien in the country.
Plenty of countries have shown effective ways of helping with addiction. Portugal comes to mind. Treating it as an illness as any other is a start, rather than outright dismissing them as an equal because they are addicted.

Thanks for sharing this video. You did the right thing by feeding & clothing the boy. I appreciate that you also intervened when the Police were taking him away to lock him up. He was collecting bottles to recycle and was going to be paid for that, he wasn’t doing anyone any harm. He definitely didn’t deserve to be screamed at or beaten up just for wandering near those shops. May Allah give us all guidance and make us all better humans. Ameen. 🇵🇰👍☝️🙏🌎

This is a compelling work. Helping people in need is never simple. There are always layers to the suffering of individuals. Peeling back some of those layers from time to time provides the insight needed to understanding that the suffering of others occurs within a greater context and not simply the result of an individual making poor choices. If anything, we need more videos like this because as you and Chris already know from your travels, to really "see" the world, one must visit the places where humanity has been marginalized. Welcome to another side of Pakistan Chris. You did a wonderful thing helping out this kid, and I'm really glad you made this video. It's important people get a full picture of a country.
This kid is homeless, he's addicted to drugs which a lot of homeless people use to dull the pain of their lives more than anything else. He's begging for a living and is likely being bullied by criminal gangs to provide them cash for the right to be allowed to beg. It's very much like Fagan and his gang in Oliver Twist. When talking to the man who said he'd offered the kid a home, the kid told you he was a dirty man, that was not a reference to his hygiene. He likely meant the man is sexual predator.
The loud obnoxious man was pretty typical of how Pakistani police treat people they suspect are criminal, especially the poor criminals. The police in the bigger cities are directed to work with private security guards to keep beggars away from the nicer areas. They're often rounded up and shipped out of the city. The Pakistani police has not lost it's colonialist mindset. There is good and bad everywhere but as an institute people generally see it in a poor light - with good reason. They're only good to foreigners and the wealthy.
Charities in Pakistan do a lot to support the poor and needy, but there is often not enough resource and in a lot of cases, sometimes the recipients of help won't agree to the terms of help (for example no drugs in shelters). The current government has its flaws, but it's the only one in living memory who has started to work towards projects for the people on the bottom rung of society. It's early days and will require decades of sustained support and economic improvements to end this level of poverty in Pakistan.

You are raising global awareness and spawned further conversations on multiple issues so net positive. You can do what you can and plans don't always go the way you plan. You felt the same compassion as you did for the old lady vegetable seller, but, this one is a little more complex. You did what you could and maybe something good will happen for this kids because of your post...

@Chrislewis The video was NOT only informative but also displayed the COMPASSION towards the needy ones. Having said that it's a common phenomenon in the Indian- Subcontinent;there are poor kids who are homeless (some family less too) begging on the roads and then there are people like yourself who wanna help them but the harsh reality is most of those kids are drug addicts or they have a reporting person who beats the shit out of them and take all the money/clothes etc . In a nutshell as much as we want we can't really combat their situation because of the several factors involved, It's a very sad part of the society we live in however we have accepted it as a part of the system just the way we have accepted corruption.

Unfortunately, as tragic as it is to find any kid on the street, these kids become used to a life where they beg for money and do do drugs. If offered shelter or therapy they would decline it.
Many like you do feel sorry for them but to give them money or feel sorry for them encourages them even more.
Thee society really needs to change on the whole to make a difference to the thousands of such kids out on the street.

I live in Sweden. I know how many pedophiles are here. I know how many sex shop and sex cinema are available for everyone. Sweden is a social country but there is a lots of swedish homeless and drugs addicted and its same in whole europe as well in USA. I know young guys selling them as sex worker online to mens. Chris Lewis enjoying free food in Pakistan But suddenly he found a homeless person which is very unusual for him? So what about thousands of homeless people in USA ?

@@YaqoobKhan-wy8nr I live in Pakistan and visited Sweden due to business purposes. Sweden is a totally different system, based on rights for everyone and with a well developed welfare system. Yes there are homeless in every country, but in Pakistan and other poor countries the percentage is much higher (millions) either poor and homeless, who are trapped in this in generations and there are no system which help them at all , they are left for dead.

But still out of humanity and sympathy for poor and homeless you helped him bought him food, clothes and shoes. It's really wise that you didn't gave him money. Seeing this video I also realize that he seems to be involved in something wrong maybe I don't know but Allah knows well. It was all right what you did and you even apologized I didn't knew what to feel when the police were yelling and he was cursing too it was all messed up but you don't have to feel guilty... However, at the same time, when I compare this situation with newyork homeless people and Philadelphia drugs users I found the same attitude and mindset of people around the world who are addicted, they certainly don't want to change there situation and wants to prefer this lifestyle.

It's the responsibility of the country to educate and provide him healthcare. Even if he's addicted to drugs, state and the adults around him are equally responsible. I hope authorities watch this video and help him.
Pakistan does not have such kind of fundings or budget to help the poor and the homeless in a meaningful way, they are left for dead.

I live in F-10 and kids like these all over. It hurts me to see police officers being harsh to them, but I do understand why. Still it's not the right thing to do. What's more messed up is that there are a lot of good people that have tried to help these kids. Zamrud Khan is a good example. But these kids escape as you can't keep them with force. I wish we could do anything about it but sadly there isn't. There are facilities but as I said, you can't keep someone against their will. All that can be done is give them food and clothes even if they don't appreciate it.

Chris if I was in your place I would do the exact same, you did all you could, true legend in my eyes brother. The world belongs to everyone native or non native to whatever country. I believe in a multicultural society where without imposing you can share your culture beliefs traits etc with others. The unfortunate truth is there are sad stories like this in many countries especially in the developing third world countries. I wish this could stop and that there was a way.
