The cops basically said as much. That they did not detain him for unrelatedly being undocumented is completely separate. Most mules are likely documented residents and the cops do absolutely nothing.
I'm actually devastated that the Chinese mule just walked out unscathed, that too after he admitted to being a convicted felon, having served time and also accepted to being a mule for this transaction.

two years ago i gave the Danish police every single piece of evidence i had on those who scammed me, in januar 2024 the police send me an email telling me they closed my cases because they didn't have the resourses to contact foreing police. i send a complaint of them not doing the correct job. my complaint was rejected with the same reason. the amount of mental and financial loss i went through and no justice. Often times people who are in danger will not call police in fear of what their status is. These cops are just bad cops. What is happening here is a crime, why these cops are cops is mind boggling. I live in an Asian country. My sister in law, friends, my doctor have been scammed as well as my husband repeatedly. Even when they get caught, only some guy at the low level serves time. None of us were ever compensated. I didn't agree to them but still suffered the consequences. I get much satisfaction and have great appreciation for your courage to work at catching the guilty.

Then the government started giving out surplus military equipment like candy on Halloween. I saw a department for a town that had 500 people and two part-time officers that got an Armored Personnel Carrier. Am I the only person wondering what the fuck? Everything has changed. Getting money for drug arrests, not convictions, was a stupid idea. Granting seizure power on large sums of cash that departments get to keep was a terrible idea. Monetizing the function of law enforcement is patently stupid. The reality is the current crop of chiefs, sheriffs, and brass like it this way.
These “scammers” are foot soldiers for the real scammers. I think it’s a deadly ring of “bosses” orchestrating these scams. These guys look scared s***less like they’ll face serious repercussions at the hand of their “boss”

Local and federal law enforcement leave a LOT to be desired -- especially with their respect to knowledge of the law and basic civil rights. But in this case, they did not have probable cause to arrest this guy, as other commenters have suggested. What would have been the right course of action (IMHO) would be to engage in extended questioning of the mule while trying to get someone from the FBI to show up. As even the Trilogy Media guys said, this is a *Federal* crime -- and local cops don't arrest people for Federal crimes. However, the cop in the hallway screwed up big time because, even after being told that the issue was NOT that the guy wouldn't leave, he went back into the hotel room and told his partner, and the mule, that the issue was that Trilogy Media just wanted the mule to leave.
Unfortunately those police couldn't do anything. A lot of the crime was outside their jurisdiction - FBI and INTERPOL are more that jurisdiction - and most of what they had locally they couldn't do a thing about because of the ludicrous sanctuary city laws put in place by people who don't care about protecting anyone from crimes. Their hands were tied. In the future, I expect Trilogy Media will have to set up meet ups in cities that aren't sanctuary cities just in case of situations like this.

Yeah they let him go because they basically kidnapped the dude and threatened him into a confession. None of this footage could be used in court and it would probably be impossible to get a conviction. There are rules to how these stings and interviews go and they broke a lot of them.

Trilogy Media is one of the big names in scambaiting, enough that scammers namedrop them. It's not impossible they'd fake videos even then, but 'it's a sanctuary city so we can't do anything' would be bizarre for a scripted encounter. At a minimum arresting the mule and more likely giving the impression the international scam group is being pursued is much better viewing.
I was illegally scammed once not because of anything like this I had a travels network of America partnered with Bank of America electronically cash a $3,000 check out of my bank account without my approval it took me three years to get it back through his civil lawsuit against Bank of America but I did get my money back needless to say I might put a paycheck in there now but I spend it immediately I don't give them any time to try to take anyting unfortunately my kids get nothing when I die but no scammer gets it either they at least get stuff while I'm alive and they're both adults by the way I should mention😂

I have been suffering the consequences of a scammer for more than 1 year and the police do not do ANYTHING. It is a shame. I will have to pay for my stupidity for the rest of my life as far as it concerns to them. I live in Germany so this has been happening all over the world. People work hard to get things in life and these guys just steal for us. 😔
Unfortunately it’s the life we live, I don’t blame the cops tho because they only arrest for what they know will stick and if I were them I wouldn’t risk arresting someone with the recourse of being sued for it. There isnt anything local law can do with international fraud. The mule crime didnt occur as they never handed the parcel and let him attempt to walk out with it. Had they done that part than local law could have gotten something but the mule didnt mule anything yet. The rest is out of local law enforcements hands unfortunately.

This is why Uber package pickup is scary. As an Uber Eats driver you get a delivery pickup on the app. Go to the address and have no idea you are the cash mule for the scammer. They don't tell us whats in the package. Just where to pick up and drop off. Now the person you are picking up from thinks you're a scammer.
