Thanks Charles. Saka, for me, is a world-class player bordering on elite now. The question is how many players are better than him in his position currently in the world? Maybe Salah, and even that, isn't clear cut. The fact that he's even compared to Salah to raise a point of argument says it all. People look at numbers, but why i've always liked him is his level of consistency, which for me, separates great players from good players. Saka is decisive in every match, regardless of where he plays, who he's playing against and which team he plays for. He's not a "Stat-paddler" a la Bruno Fernandes and Cole Palmer (scoring 4 in one game against minnows, then going conspicuously quiet for long periods and when it matters most). Any player can do it "once upon a time" occassionally but special players do it at the same level consistently for years.
We gotta give more credit to the team getting the goal and changing the momentum before the subs. The subs came on at the perfect time to maintain momentum and increase the intensity. But well done to the lads who started for turning it around so quickly 👏🏾

If they carry on how they are, in regards to injuries/availability and not being able to find their top form when back fit. Do you think they will go next summer? I personally think they will go. Though it would be a shame to see Tomiyasu depart, but we never seem to be able to get a stretch of games out of him anymore. One other thing. I know you are a busy man, but I was wondering if on match days if you could also do a predicted lineup of the opposition team and how you feel they will play against us? I LOVE these matches (afterwards, obvs) because these are the games that the players and manger learn from. I was a comedian for ten years. When you have a great gig you ldont improve in any way. When you have a tricky, challenging, gig, you learn new strategies, you improve your ability to remain confident and not less the emotional side of things negatively affect your performance. A few more matches like this at this end of the season will be good for Arsenal. Sometimes hard to watch, but in the long run, this is the team maturing.

Everyone seems to conveniently forget the last time we played Southampton we scraped a 3-3 draw. They were relegated that season. There is no divine right to beat anyone in this league. Southampton always put up a fight against us. We were never going to turn them over like some of the so-called pundits expected. Anything can happen on the day. A player gets sent off. A spawny goal goes in off someone's behind. Just take the win - overall it was deserved yesterday. Fringe players got minutes to help sharpen them when required in the future. Job done.

I was sitting in north end left corner and had great sight line down the wing. Sterling was too static and predictable. He just didn't seem to want to make runs or to take his man to the byline. He is clearly a player and I am sure it won't take much coaching to turn him back into form. Great win, Saka is top top top class and it's a great time to be a gooner!

Hi, Charles! Regarding player ratings. Sterling was really lively, 4 dribbles, created chances and worked hard. Ill give him a 6.5. Calafiori has som many won duels, tackles, offensive runs. He is a giant already. Two times caught off guard against a super talent, but still a solid 7. He is the left side savior. I think Jorginho was not worth more than 5, and why on earth do Arteta keep him as last man on corners? He does not have the speed for that task.
When you have average players then maybe you don't play them because their out of form but a player like Jesus is so special it's worth taking the time to get him in form . He's on par with Saka at his best
The disruption wasn't the issue, i think whenever KH29 plays up front we play better and he's always a threat. I watched the Madrid game against Villarreal last night Madrid scored both goals from outside the box and according to the commentary they've been practicing shooting from outside the box and our first goal was an example. Why they win the UCL on a regular is because they have a knack of scoring out of nothing shooting outside the box no particular style of play and somehow that's what Arteta is trying to do, just win games regardless of the context but we still need to shoot outside the box more.
I'm really struggling with the criticism of rotating the team at home against SH, if we can't rotate at home against them, against whom can we play Jesus, sterling. If we had played a full first team the narrative would have been, why doesn't Arteta trust the bench, why didn't he rotate. 💁
"Sterling didn't play great" I completely disagree with that statement. He made things happen with his direct dribbling multiple times. I've never been a fan of Sterling, but you have to give credit to his attitude. If one of his runs had ended with a goal, the narrative around his performance would be totally different.
Perhaps winning games this season will not be enough. If we cannot score in the first half against teams like Southampton, the goal difference might cause problems later down the line in the season. We are lucky that Merino did not touch the ball. I think we have been lucky as the referee have called offsides for similar situations in the past. In my opinion, we are lucky to get away with it. On the other hand, if the VAR referees have called an offside, it would have been a real fiasco. On the whole, I think the decision by the referees is fair (Merino did not touch the ball) and helped the game by keeping the excitement up as goal is so hard to come by. Will be good to hear your opinion.
Sterling was not effective and seemed to be trying too hard, obviously Jesus is lacking confidence and not putting the pieces together…thankfully MA was decisive and made a triple sub at about 60 minutes….concerning that the rotation on the offensive side was so ineffective on a less talented team…this is a game the rotation must step up

I know he is a youth player but his performances have warranted it in my opinion. Second do you think it’s pure coincidence that it’s always our fullbacks who get injured the most ? Timber,white,tomiyasu, tierney,zinchenko all injured and recently calafiori had a minor injury. We see half of those players as injury prone now but is it the demand of a modern day fullback causing it?
I rate Riccardo Calafiori as a RB, but he gets too aggressive with the initial press, trying to intercept or steal the ball off the feet pacy and tricky wingers. He needs to more calculating, learn how to use the touchlines and teammates (who also must learn his playing style defensively) to set traps for wingers sometimes.
Jesus hasn't had a temporary loss of form. He's been poor for 18 months. And even when he first arrived and was playing well, his goal scoring form was erratic. Arsenal need a couple of reliable number 9s to compete across all competitions and at the moment we are relying on Havertz. We need to replace him and the sooner the better.

I don’t think anyone has noticed but Saliba has had a dip in form this season. It’s a drop from 10/10 to 7/10 but it’s starting to become a bit noticeable. I have a feeling the minutes are staring to get to him and he doesn’t a natural back up. Hopefully he can get some rotation

Arteta messed up his line up. He started with two attackers low on confidence they were awfully selfish in trying to impress. I had hoped that he would start Nwanyeri behind Trossard on top and bring in those two after the game had already been sealed. Partey did very well at right back which I didn't expect.
As a full back, Coming against tricky wingers you will encounter such moments, as long as you have someone covering for you, no big deal, it is normal in football. But i agree, if this happens to Zinny there will be too much criticism of him not being good defensively.

If you have a player with a weekly salary of about 265k would you bench him for a youth player? The only reason I would bench him is if I have given up on him. Nwaneri is very young and would definitely have his chances but Jesus is the expected cover for Kai, if we are not able to bring back his form, it may lead to problem later on in the season as we have to play clusters of matches which is not ideal for a single player.

The difference between Palmer and Saka is their defensive stats. Palmer's are non-existent.

Hi, Charles! Regarding player ratings. Sterling was really lively, 4 dribbles, created chances and worked hard. Ill give him a 6.5. Calafiori has som many won duels, tackles, offensive runs. He is a giant already. Two times caught off guard against a super talent, but still a solid 7. He is the left side savior. I think Jorginho was not worth more than 5, and why on earth do Arteta keep him as last man on corners? He does not have the speed for that task.
The Saka debate hinges on the 2020 Euro's Final (2021) when he missed a penalty. You get judged by a different set of standards.

The disruption wasn't the issue, i think whenever KH29 plays up front we play better and he's always a threat. I watched the Madrid game against Villarreal last night Madrid scored both goals from outside the box and according to the commentary they've been practicing shooting from outside the box and our first goal was an example. Why they win the UCL on a regular is because they have a knack of scoring out of nothing shooting outside the box no particular style of play and somehow that's what Arteta is trying to do, just win games regardless of the context but we still need to shoot outside the box more.
I'm really struggling with the criticism of rotating the team at home against SH, if we can't rotate at home against them, against whom can we play Jesus, sterling. If we had played a full first team the narrative would have been, why doesn't Arteta trust the bench, why didn't he rotate. 💁

I understand the use of Jesus and Sterling, giving them a chance to prove their worth, but I don't want it to cost us against Liverpool, City and Chelsea. Can Jesus and Sterling come on in the second half even against lower ranked teams, after Havertz, Trossard and Saka have put us in front?

Charles - great content as always. Do you think the second goal assist from Saka to Martinelli could have been called offside due to Mikel Merino attempt to play the ball? We are lucky that Merino did not touch the ball. I think we have been lucky as the referee have called offsides for similar situations in the past. In my opinion, we are lucky to get away with it. On the other hand, if the VAR referees have called an offside, it would have been a real fiasco. On the whole, I think the decision by the referees is fair (Merino did not touch the ball) and helped the game by keeping the excitement up as goal is so hard to come by. Will be good to hear your opinion.
Sterling was not effective and seemed to be trying too hard, obviously Jesus is lacking confidence and not putting the pieces together…thankfully MA was decisive and made a triple sub at about 60 minutes….concerning that the rotation on the offensive side was so ineffective on a less talented team…this is a game the rotation must step up

Firstly do you think Ethan nwaneri deserved the start more then Jesus and should have played instead or jorghino or Jesus? I know he is a youth player but his performances have warranted it in my opinion.
Second do you think it’s pure coincidence that it’s always our fullbacks who get injured the most ? Timber,white,tomiyasu, tierney,zinchenko all injured and recently calafiori had a minor injury. We see half of those players as injury prone now but is it the demand of a modern day fullback causing it?
I rate Riccardo Calafiori as a RB, but he gets too aggressive with the initial press, trying to intercept or steal the ball off the feet pacy and tricky wingers.
He needs to more calculating, learn how to use the touchlines and teammates (who also must learn his playing style defensively) to set traps for wingers sometimes.
Jesus hasn't had a temporary loss of form. He's been poor for 18 months. And even when he first arrived and was playing well, his goal scoring form was erratic.
Arsenal need a couple of reliable number 9s to compete across all competitions and at the moment we are relying on Havertz. We need to replace him and the sooner the better.

I don’t think anyone has noticed but Saliba has had a dip in form this season. It’s a drop from 10/10 to 7/10 but it’s starting to become a bit noticeable. I have a feeling the minutes are staring to get to him and he doesn’t a natural back up. Hopefully he can get some rotation

Arteta messed up his line up. He started with two attackers low on confidence they were awfully selfish in trying to impress. I had hoped that he would start Nwanyeri behind Trossard on top and bring in those two after the game had already been sealed. Partey did very well at right back which I didn't expect.

As a full back, Coming against tricky wingers you will encounter such moments, as long as you have someone covering for you, no big deal, it is normal in football. But i agree, if this happens to Zinny there will be too much criticism of him not being good defensively.

I don't know what it is but for some reason our fans are some of the most negative in the league. For how good we are it seems like there's a crisis every other weak. 1st it was Martinellli now it's Jesus, and Sterling. Havertz was a gamble that has paid off, Sterling is still running down blind alleys and to me shows no sign of improvement. Sterling has pace pace and nothing else it will be interesting who he plays for next season it will not be Arsenal( I hope).

Come on Charles, a 6 for Calafiori? That's just rubbish. For me he was the man of the match just before Saka. Sure Saka scored a goal and had two assist, but alson had a lot of misses. Should we always give the man of the match to the one scoring and assisting? No. Calafiori had two mistakes in the game but apart from that he was a monster.
In the same way it's a shame that Raya didn't get the Player of the month for august. To make those fantastic saves against Wolves and Villa, saves that won us the games, and don't get the palyer of the month basically menans that it's impossible for a goalkeepper to get Player of the month.

Jesus didn't play well ,Sterling didn't play and partey played out of position and there was the Ramsdelle effect that affect the boys mentally.we had so many corners but we couldn't capitalize on it because there was too much respect for Ramsdelle.on a normal day the players would have bully the keeper and scored a goal from a corner like we normally do but because it was ramsdelle we failed to bully him..That's my opinion though.

If you have a player with a weekly salary of about 265k would you bench him for a youth player? The only reason I would bench him is if I have given up on him. Nwaneri is very young and would definitely have his chances but Jesus is the expected cover for Kai, if we are not able to bring back his form, it may lead to problem later on in the season as we have to play clusters of matches which is not ideal for a single player.
When are you going to accept that Jesus is never going to get any better than he has been for the last year/ In fact, he is worse now than at any point. Absolutely washed up and 265k a week wasted. He certainly cannot play when Havertz is in midfield.
