Cast Iron Exhaust Manifold Repair

- A customer brought me this cast iron exhaust manifold to repair. They can't get one from the dealer because of a 2 month backorder. We are going to fix it so they can use their vehicle until the new part arrives.

Why would it only be a couple months I had one welded for a 351cleaveland and it lasted longer than the engine at least ten years
Whenever you weld cast iron it's a gamble how long the repair will last. If the original casting failed I have no reason to belive that the repair would be any stronger.
This will be a challenging repair! I'm looking forward to the video to see how you handle it. Perfect alignment without it being mounted on the vehicle will be tough...... Good luck!!
I mean if you only grid a bevel in like 3/4 of it on the outside I think it will go right back together I don't think alignment will be much of a problem I guess if you were trying hard you could drill some holes in something to mount it down on but the bolt holes are probably like oveled or something
I agree James. Since this is only a temporary repair anyway. Since 3/4 of it has obviously been leaking for a long time. JB Weld could probably stop the leak until the new part comes in. 😉😁
That was my concern too as well as the warpage and distortion when welding it back together. The customer assured me there is play in the mounting holes where it bolts to the engine so lets hope. This job is likely going to be a freebee because if it works I'm likely to get more work in the future. If not than nothing lost. I've already made them aware that if the original casting failed there is no reason to believe that it's now going to be stronger after being welded but we will soon see :)
the right electrode would do it, I get some awsome ones
It did 👌
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Vee out the crack with angle grinder leaving the rough grind marks. Bolt parts to flat plate for alignment….Pre heat in oven then Braze after post heat in oven the repair will last longer than the POS truck…..Steve
They are still using it everyday to this day.
Idk why i, without a doubt, knew it was a dodge manifold 😂
Shouldn't that be tack welded while its on the head right?
Whereas it's still in use on the vehicle and I was told it lined up as though it was a brand new manifold, I will say no. It's not necessary if you ensure it's welded against a perfectly flat surface and you verify your mounting holes are aligned. This is how I do it. When manifolds get sent to me, i dont have an assortment of heads to mate to.
Weld it up with a high nickel content welding rod... will last a long time. Be sure to peen the weld while its hot to relieve the stress in the weld.
Nickel works well but silicon bronze is all I use now for cast iron. It's just about as strong as pre-broken cast
It's never cast iron anymore. Going to be more of a ductile iron or a high nickel cast steel. Had success welding similar manifolds with a 309 tig rod making stock manifolds into turbo manifolds. Just preheat and do a slow cool down
I can't figure out how people are making 309 work. I've tried 3 times using 309 and it cracks every time. The best filler and strongest that I've tested to date is this. It's almost as strong as pre broken cast iron. It's pretty good stuff
@@BrandonLund I know it wasn't happy with the pulse. I had to weld just on regular dc. That was on my 8.8 centre section when I was welding on mild steel mount kit to ductile iron centre section for the torque arm mount. I did preheat the shit out of it with a tiger torch and covered it with a welding blanket to keep the heat in. On the exhaust manifolds put them in my fire place and got them really hot. I had to do a couple passes to pull out all the contaminates. I then put them back in the wood stove and came back the next day and it was still warm. Not sure it's the proper way but it worked. I know it's a real pain to identify what cast metal it is. Spark patterns and file testing really just gave me conflicting results.
Fluxcore mig don't know why it works so well.
Some Toyota manifolds have a flex joint to mitigate that issue.
Sounds like it's a common issue
Those 5.7 log manifolds are junk, but if anyone meeds some i have a set sitting on my shelf from my engine build. Alsways down to ship and help someone out
Stand up guy! Thanks man for putting that out there! 🙏👍
@@BrandonLund 👍👍 definitely been there
2 month backorder lol
I'm not sure why. Supposedly the dealers are limiting how many a person can purchase.
Probably be fine
@dylandesmond what do you mean carry on cracking it's already split in half
This repair only has to last until the new one arrvies from the dealer.
@dylandesmond ya but there is no Crack to carry on
Some how i got unsubscribed to your channel and others added
UA-cam is at it again LOL
