Portrait lens with a Character! | TTArtisan 90 1.25 Review

- This is my honest opinion about this lens. Also this is my first video in English :). I was very pleasantly surprised by this lens. For me the TTArtisan brand is the one of the best in terms of build quality from the budget Chinese manufacturers. But the surprise came from the optics, it is a very good portrait lens with great character.
PS for those of you who ask why do I compare the TTArtisan to the Canon FDn 85 1.2 L the answer is simple - first that Canon is a Legend and second you can find them both on a similar price and it is a great alternative option. If you want me to create a separate video for the Canon or other vintage lenses - 100 comments #morevintageglassreviewsplease and I will do my best :). I have access to a lot of optical Legends and I can test them out.

Dude thank you for this video i have both the tt artisan 90 mm 1.25 and the canon fd 85 1.2 fd , and i love the tt artisan it feels a little longer and sharper wide open even though its heavy , its worth it

Interesting review from an unusual angle. A lens, as you point out, isn't just plain mathematics, and quality is many things. The fact that you open up and talk about these other elements, is just great! Keep it up!

Thank you for the great review Simeon! I purchased this lens a couple weeks ago after seeing some solid reviews and a good deal. When it arrived I was testing out in a fairly closed off space at near minimum focus distance. I also have the Zhong Yi 85mm f1.2 and had pulled it out for a direct comparison. I immediately noticed that the TTArtisans seemed extremely soft next to the Zhong Yi, so much so that I wanted to send it back. Luckily I came across your video while I was trying to determine if I got a lemon. I'm so glad you noticed that the focus distance affects the sharpness. You were the first reviewer I saw that called out this phenomenon. When I went outside and gave it a try at mid focus distances, it was like a completely different lens. You saved me from sending it back!

Yes this thing with the focus distance and the sharpness is a thing since there are faster prime lenses and manufacturers battle it in different ways. TTA chose to keep the lens simple in terms of optical design and I think it is much better this way because when you use it in its sweet spot it has almost no flaws.
PS when you said other reviewers I was frustrated that nobody talks about those nerdy details and you can pretty much see one review and it is like you have seen them all, that is why I forced myself to make one.

The detail in your reveiw is very good. You are the only reviewer I have ever seen that tested sharpness across different focusing distances, useful information. It is obvious that you are very knowledgable. You should definitely keep it up. I would try to tighten up the overall video so that it is shorter but I think that you will find an audience especially if you put out this kind of quality of information.
Also, I forgot to mention but you including the t-stop is very valuable.

Excellent review. I was considering this lens, but I’ll purchase a Leica Summicron-M 90 mm f/2 instead, which will complement my Leica Macro Elmar-M 90 mm f/4.
I already have several super fast lenses, including three Leica Noctilux-M (50 f/1.0, 50 f/1.2, & 75 f/1.25) and fast ones (Summilux-M 28, 35, and f/1.4).

About the 85 1.8 - I own it and I really like it. It has some flaws but considering the price and its age I think it is a very good lens. I like its character too, it is not clinical and boring like the GM, the image is more like a mix of a vintage lens and a modern one. I use it a lot for work.

Great video. I have the mitakon 85mm F1.2. I’m considering the TT artisan and possibly selling the mitakon …..in your opinion is there much of a difference ?
Well the Mitakon is not a bad lens but the build quality is very improved in the TTA lens. It all depends on your personal needs.
Great review and I particularly appreciate you testing the transmission, since so few people seem to even take notice of it. I must ask though; you estimated t2.2 for the 85/1.8 based on its comparison to a 55/1.8 at t2. How did you measure your 55 to be t2 to begin with? DXOMark measured t1.8 for its copies of both the 55 and 85
I tested the 55 1.8 at F1.8 because most sources say it is an actual T2.0 there. The 85 1.8 was giving me darker exposures than that. BTW I recently tested the Samyang 50 1.4 II and the 50 1.2 GM. And the GM is exactly 1 stop faster than the 55 1.8 but the vignette is quite stronger.
About the accuracy of the DXO test, I decided to trust other sources because DXO measured the lens T1.8 on A7rII but on the A7rIV it was T1.9 and on A6000 T2.0... And the 85 1.8 in my testing is definitely darker than the 55 1.8 by around 1/3 stop. I measure them mostly in the center because that is where they deliver.

Thanks for the review. Seems to me a portrait lens that’s not good at portrait distance, and has horrible contrast drops and blooming in many lighting conditions, most probably due to subpar coating. Frankly, the old Canon FD seems a much better option.
Hi! Thanks for the kind words! As I said in the review the blooming at closer distance is due to the simpler optical design, not coating :). And about the veil flare - it could be internal reflections but I still have no confirmation from the next guy who took the lens from me. He tried to modify it here and there to improve the flare issues.
How is this compared to the Canon TS-E 90mm F2.8 Tilt Lens?
Very different lenses. Nothing in common.

@@SimeonKolev I have two that I've used, and was not satisfied. I am using Miranda, Pentax, Yashica, and other vintage Lenses that costed less, with Better Results!

No onion rings? you must check your eyesight. Major deal breaker.
That is why I liked it, they skipped the aspherical elements and the bokeh has no onion rings :)
Or you do not know what is called onion rings in the bokeh, it is the inner circles that are visible in the Canon FD 85 1.2 L's bokeh balls, the TTArtisan has non of these. The outline is something else :)
