    By nightfall all the roots turned green signifying that they had adsorbed a lot of moisture and the humidity in the vase was 100%.

      i have a little Ascocenda in a small hurricane vase as every other medium has caused it to rot, but it has just sat there for a few months now

      TD Moore the only media that I’ve found to work for many of the higher light types is lava rock. Also, I have found that Rhynchostylis and their hybrids (Bangkok Sunset comes to mind) are difficult and prone to sulk.

      Wade's Orchids Great video! My only concern would be mold setting on with a 100% humidity..... Because apart from humidity vandas LOVE air movement around their roots......

    I've been growing my 5 x vandas like this for the past year in my home, with great results. The only thing I do differently is I don't have any stones or anything else in the vase along with the vanda roots. All I do is I add about a cup of weak fertilized water in the A.M. with my watering can, then after an hour or so, I tip the water out. The roots stay humid for most of the day, but are dry again overnight. On a day where I don't have time, I simply spritz water into the vase, using a spray bottle, (no need to remove the vanda from the top), and wet the roots; a few spritzer motions is all it takes. Works like a charm, and off to work I go! My vandas are healthy, and happy:)

    I grow mine in a vase with about an inch of water. Once a week I fill it up and soak for an hour then drain off except for the one inch. I have been spraying weak fertil. Sol on leaves and superficial roots several times a wee. They seem happy

    Nice video Wade! I grow an Ascocenda Suksamran Sunlight 'Sweet Orange' vanda in a vase with lava rock and water at the bottom. So far, so good (fingers crossed). Good point about the fertilizer too, as I found it requires a small dilute with every watering to satisfy its nutrient hungry appetite.

    I see charcoal...could I put some in the vase with the Vanda orchid plant?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  5 років тому +1

      JUNE FIORITO charcoal is fine as long as you remove the plant from the vase when you fertilize because charcoal absorbs the fertilizer.

    Hi Wade, thank you for such a great video! I’m new to your channel (via Holy City Orchids).
    This is hugely helpful since it’s soon to be fall.
    When you talk about a lower feed, what ppm do you go for? I’ve seen others saying 400-450ppm in water culture specifically with Vandas.
    That high a feed scares me!

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  5 років тому +2

      Barb Froede I usually go for about 300ppm total concentration. Thank you for watching!

    That's a great idea thank you very much for sharing it please suggest something for Vanda seedlings,I have 4 of them the roots seems to dry up fast and the tips all blackened ( got them a week back)

      If the roots are long enough to go into the vase you can use rubber bands or tie them together. Or you might find a different size container so they fit better.

    +Wade's Orchids , My question is: Does coco fibre from coconuts and spanish moss help with hydration and humidity raising when caring for Vanda Orchids?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  6 років тому +1

      Benjamin Evans I wouldn’t recommend coconut fiber in the hurricane vases and if Spanish moss is used it should be living. Otherwise you will get debris in with the gravel. If using traditional basket culture they could help with humidity.

      I am going to use basket culture for my vanda :)

    I pushed all the roots into a tall hurricane vase with stones on the bottom which has water below (all washed-very clean) of the stones. Some of the roots are turning dark brown. They are firm, but very dark in color. Also there are some thick white roots which seem healthy. I soak the roots daily for about an hour then return to vase. The roots do not touch th stones. Should I remove the dark roots? Hat else can I do?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  6 років тому

      If the roots are firm I’d let them go. I’m not sure about soaking them that long. They will absorb all they can in about 10 minutes. Keep me informed please.

      I agree, an hour is way to long 8-10mins is enough

    Hey mate, I’m using this method for my 3 Vanda‘s and I’m just starting to have problems with mould growing on right at the bottom where the water line is. Any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong or how to stop it? Thanks in advance

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  6 років тому

      Scott Darcy that’s a natural thing to have happen. A bit of Physan in the water (about 2 drops) will prevent it. To get out what you have take the plant out and soak it for about an hour in a 10% chlorine bleach solution and then scrub it with water and a bit of dish washing soap.

    can i use sny kin d of rough gravel cleaned have basalt split course and medium it is gray /brownish

      @wadesorchids7219  6 років тому +1

      Willem Heitlager you can give it a try. If it’s working you will be able to see that the surface of the stones stay wet.
