I so enjoyed this conversation. I think it's worth making mention of David Mackie's book, "Nothing Like Work or Right in the D'Oyly Carte: A memoir of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in its final years 1975 - 1982". What a fascinating read it is and a must for those who remember the Company with affection. By the law of averages I must have come into contact with David Mackie on many occasions, for I learned from his book that we would both have been at Glasgow University during the same time. Back in those days the G&S operas were popular with schools as end of year productions and so I already knew them fairly well. However I didn't know that in due course I would be fortunate to hear them performed by the D'Oyly Carte and that a fellow student at GU would be conducting them.
