  • Here are a few thoughts on daily driving an old car, and this case is CRX, in modern times. To summarize:
    1, you get bullied
    2, mpgs ftw
    3, visibility/space
    4, creature comforts vs. simplicity

    Being someone who daily drove a CRX for years I can absolutely relate to all of your feelings on the experience. Particularly the need to drive defensively. You absolutely have to be your own defender against all the other cars on the road. This problem only got worse as the years went on, for when I first started driving my CRX all the other cars were also smaller. When I drive mine now it feels more like riding a motorcycle. You're practically invisible and really have to assert yourself in most situations. All that extra room you're feeling on the inside is a lack of safety. It's a risk that not many are willing to take anymore. And sadly stuffing the cars with all the technology in the world was never going to solve the root of the problem that is the ever declining driver skill and attentiveness in the US. Now people crash into each other as much as they ever have, you just don't die when someone does. I wish we lived in a world where we could have just made the driver safer and left the cars alone. But sadly, that's not what happened.

      Yeah my lowered 01' Celica GT-S is TINY compared almost any car today, not even to mention all the crossovers. I'm pretty careful with it, but I love how agile cars like that are.
      And with the 2ZZ it looks sounds and almost feels like a motorcycle like you said hah.

      Agreed. I’ve had my 91’ since 2005 when I was only 20 and a good driver (no accidents and alive at 38) but no where near where I am now, (mostly from daily drive my baby for many, many, 374k miles) and this video and all the comments are spot on. Driving her forced me to be hyper aware of others and all the hazards of the road, like, 100% of them. I’ve had many moments there where I had to pull my soul back from leaving because it just “Can’t Even” me putting it in harms way anymore. There are 2 very good positives though I believe come from being a Rex owner; you become a top 1% excellent driver, and you save excrement loads of money in low maintenance and fuel costs. One other thing I will say is to give Honda very high praise for making these legends so user friendly and nimble. The near unmatched handling and response are almost catlike if you can do your part. The engineering excellence of Golden Age Honda has saved my life, bank account, and ability to reliably travel, many, many times. Thank you, Honda. By far the best $500 I spent.

      This is a very true statement. Not to get political at all but i wish it were the same way with firearms. As the generations evolved we are being dumbed down and conditioned to feel. Certain way. Instead of educating how to handle things safely we just rip the cord and say “no more”.
      I wish they made honda crx’s still. Im so glad i have mine and im well aware its a calculated risk driving one. I also have a big lifted tundra that rules the road. When i had my r6 street-bike it was similar like you said to driving the small crx. Very cautiously indeed!

    The little car bullying is real. Driving the same speed in the slow lane between my cars it's a night and day difference how comfortable people are weaving around you or getting right up on your tail to force you to go faster instead of just getting in the fast lane. Double annoying when your car is low to the ground and ultra bright LEDs sit at eye level

    I like driving cars like this or the 1G Insight. People stack up in the left lane thinking I'm going to go slow, then I can blast past them as a light turns green. It can take take off quickly enough to get ahead of anyone who isn't trying to race. It's much easier to avoid potholes too. People definitely are jerks at least 10x more often. They also assume I'm going too slow when I'm going faster than most other traffic, so they try to rush past or rage-pass me. Then they get tickets because 10 over wasn't fast enough.

    Mk1 CRX feels even more Spacious, as i said to my dad, the door cards, he said why called door cards, probably because thats basically all they used to be as thick as a card. So straight away you have more room inside. I dont miss any Gadgets, new vehicles drive me mad, everything does now though, technology isnt fun now its controlling, happy to drive old cars without silly touch screen and annoying bings and bongs for everything, van at work you cant even move forward unless you close door fully as handbrake wont release, nanny state like Chinese Government soon

    You have more space because everything around you is thinner inside especially the doors. New cars have to meet stricter safety standards so the door sills are higher and doors are thicker so you'll have less room inside and less visibility.

    • @rushnerd
      @rushnerd 11 місяців тому +1

    lol, the CRX is half the length of the fiesta. If you put the seats down, the fiesta can hold a lot more. I miss my two CRX's. That car is super clean but I wouldn't trade my ST for it. Gotta love that wing tho.

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  Рік тому +2

      No, the CRX is about 1 foot shorter. That’s all. The cargo room with the seats down is very similar. More in the Fiesta yes but not that much more. Both great cars for sure, but after seven years with the fiesta, I just never drove it anymore which says something. In different seasons of life different cars check the boxes for us.

    Not sure how you are getting that mileage. Perhaps fuel technology has changed?? I'm the original owner of a 1990 CRX Si. When I was in high school and then my early 20s I regularly drove the car to Florida from Jersey and I used to keep a little memo pad in my glove box to track mileage (yeah I'm an old fucker, lol). I used to average on the highway 35 ish MPG during those trips. Sure it had the weak USDM Si 1.6 SOHC engine but if anything that should have netted better mileage. I mean that's awesome for you but just seems odd.
    These days forget it, car gets driven once every 6 months or so and has a JDM ITR engine that's been bored and stroked. I replaced the 5th gear from the ITR trans with one from a LS integra but I still get low 20s on the highway if I'm lucky.
    Decent talk video, love the RHD!
