  • 20 years ago computer scientist Danny Hillis thought up a monument scale slow moving mechanical clock to serve as an icon to long-term thinking. 10 years ago a first prototype was completed and put into the Science Museum of London. 5 years ago the full size clock project began design. A few months ago that project began construction. Project manager Alexander Rose will discuss the process and methods underway in the Clock of the Long Now.

A prophetic inspiring generational bridging flame that renews its self for those to come providing warmth and guidance in the now for those of us who still dream of the past and for those who we might invision as we dream ,those who have long since past on for the sake of us now as we drift effortlessly yet never aimlessly upon ethereal tides setting sail on an eternal maiden journey never bound by what we may have forgotten, where history perpetually gives birth to its self rather than concealing its self through obstinate dull repetitivness .....by anesthitizing those future generations of dreamers and seekers who would otherwise be liberated by and through the arbitration of time ...

I think this is a great idea & I can totally see where you are going with this. If you are building a 2nd one, I know of a pretty good region for it, where I believe it would last much longer w/less maintainance, if both ancient & modern techniques were combined. However, the winding part may have to be thought out a little differently perhaps. It would also be closer to a location, that would be studied more, in my belief, from otherworldly visitors who may be visiting Earth in the future!!
