S-Town is a new podcast from Serial and This American Life, hosted by Brian Reed, about a man names John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who's allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But when someone else ends up dead, the search for the truth leads to a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man's life.
(SPOILER) Listener from 🇬🇧. I listened to this not long after it came out and had no idea it was real. As I listened I was blown away by the complexity of the story, the interviews seemed so.. real. I was about half way through when I thought to look up some of the places mentioned and only then found out it was all very real. John B was as complex a character as some of the timepieces he fixed. I write this September 2020. Covid has gripped the world. I wonder perhaps how John B would have reacted to this. I wouldn’t have been surprised if he would have come up with a solution to it all, it seemed that he was able to see order in chaos except that in his own life. The fascinating part of all of this was that Brian Reed would have had no concept of the outcome when he started to investigate the claims set by JBM. I have since tried my hardest to get as many people as possible to listen to this without giving anything away. I think to listen to it without any knowledge beforehand is the best way to enjoy this in its purest way. An extraordinary legacy to an extraordinary brain of an extraordinary man.
I was recommended it yesterday. On number 4 now. At first I thought it was being played by actors!
@@simonlee1557 to you both, please, take this as an understanding into an odd league of extraordinary gentlemen.
Alabama is a laughing stock of mockery, sure, but the corruption found within Aristocracies is as real as it ever will be
Right across town from me.
On my 3rd listen
I was able to speak with Tyler, we were passing through. We knew where the maze was, but it felt odd. Tyler is a really nice decent guy
My step daughters used to live in a mobile home in South 40, the oldest says she embarrassed to let people know she grew u there. This will be my second listening. My first was with my husband, He died this passed May30th And we had had plans to listen again in case we missed something. Your narration is impeccable, I could listen to what ever you read.
I'm gone have ta eat a Tums here...
God love em. 💞
***It's I'mma
Lmao
Ah it's one of them awful cherry flavor ones
What's crazy, is I'm here today on a murder podcast regarding a murder of one of the characters Tyler Goodson, because he was just shot and killed by a woodstock police officer. Seems like there's gonna be another chapter soon
Me too! I just heard about all this!
Can you tell me the name of this podcast? I’d like to listen. Thank you! 🙏🏼
This guy is a brilliant philosopher. He touches upon things we all think about. As an Alabamian, I find this fascinating.
RIP Tyler Goodson
goddammit.... this is the first time i'm hearing of his passing :/ i had really hoped he would get a better hand in life.
My friend told me to listen to this and so far I'm only in the beginning. So far it sounds good!
HeyItsBobby
But it’s not good. This piece of shit is attacking an entire innocent town.
Bomethia ends really bad
My cousin Tyler Goodson fwas murdered by police last night. I can't believe this happened. I love you and miss you Tyler.
I am so sorry for your loss❤❤❤
I’m in love with this country guy.
He called the police department currupt.....they raided his house, like always they shot him then claimed someone saw a gun. Justice for Tyler
Small towns are never what people think they are I grew up in a very small town on the Mississippi River in Iowa and I could tell you a lot of stories about that place it had a quiet a few characters and it also had a dark side. When people drive through these little towns they find them to be idyllic but that is more often than not the truth point is there probably isn’t a Mayberry out there although we all wish there was%
Lots of inbreeding goes on in small towns. I'm from one. I'm one of the 10 families with a different complexion and last name. Creepy as fuck how they think they're normal.
@@boughtbot2639 that's crazy. What state is this in?
I grew up and still live in a small rural town in Oklahoma and it's definitely shady. It sounds much like this town in the podcast where the same few families have been the power people for several generations and there's lots of shady stuff that goes on that a lot of people don't know.
All small towns have that family,we all kno the ones.way.2 much $ for any 1 small town family 2 have.and they buy all the local law and government.i grew up and live 1 town over from where this story took place.i was.smart enough to get a job that allowed me to travel around the country.
I had to listen to this entire podcast for discussion posts in college. I'm glad I did. The assignments stopped at episode 6. I listened to the entire last episode because I was so into it. Great podcast.
My buddy is on this podcast. we live in Woodstock Alabama. a lot thinks it’s fiction 🤣 and I’ll leave it at that.
This is beautifully edited and this is a really smart dude living a very dull life.
Immegeh Hi
I have a homework about s-town, can you help me?
This dude rules. Can y’all release the full uncut recordings? 😂
This man is amazing and I don't mean Brian. He is so wise and I cannot believe all he has seen and lived. I don't know how he can handle all of it.
John B? Well....he couldn't handle it, that was the twist in the story.
The plants gave us all oxygen. Thank you John B.
"Deader en hell!"
“A prison of my own making”
This quote is the summation of the life of John B Mclemore
Hard to believe that Tyler is now gone!! Rest In Peace, Tyler!! He was such a great person! 💐🕯️🕊️🍺 So was John, no matter what people want to say about him!!
Yes, within a lot of LEO's throughout Alabama, the folks are full of 💩 They'll do *ANYTHING,* to cover up *THEIR OWN* dirty crimes!! 🤬😡🤬😡 There's a *LOT* of *TRUTH,* as to what John is talking about, with the goings-on, of 💩 town!! It *STILL* happens today!!
Thank you for the upload.
You're welcome. New True Crime Podcast coming this weekend!
I worked for John B about 12 years ago. I built a chimney on the back of his house and fireplace in the house
I lived about a mile from him. I'm just now finding out about this podcast thing. He was a trip i can tell u that!!!
lol. The plants gave us all oxygen. Thank you John B.
I love this podcast
Ive only listened up to about halfway through the third chapter. It bummed me out so I'm reading comments to see if it's worth another shot?
Tbh not really but I finished it for closure and to see John's struggle being a closeted gay man in the south...
It is definitely worth finishing.
Oh my stars...
Jesse Eisenberg interviewing Mr. Mackey
I love this
He sounds like Columbus from Zombieland lololol
awesome, i grew up in waco, all small towns have their madness and secretive whispers..
The Rock is tipped to play John in the movie
Heard my dad listening to this, took me a while to find, its gives off weird vibes but still interests me somehiw
Donnie baker is the hero we dont deserve
I think it's Jimmy Frank Hicks, myself...
in beirut no clue why either lol no sand mazes out here tho bruh
Scratch any cynic and you will find a disappointed idealist. - George Carlin. RIP John B
It's really weird, because according to the story at the beginning of the Podcast that John is telling, Dylan "slashed someone's throat" which would entitle the person to self defense. So if Dylan died because being beat because he tried to kill someone else, that's karma not murder. But I am assuming that there is more to the story and this is only episode one.
I live here. There’s no more, except possibly the same bragging that goes on days after any fight during a party.
Little Caesars Pizza Hut
I used to live in woodstock
MibbGibbs I currently do, behind Kens package store
I wonder if they'll ever take down all that burnt debris. Very creepy town. I never liked to vibe it puts out. The only thing there I like is the New Life Assembly Of God Church. A lot of sweet people there.

Wdym exactly
So you work for the Burt's and you supposedly have an unbiased opinion on these matters? Nah. I know who pays you.
Hi
I have a homework about s-town, can you help me?
Dylan "nikles" is my cousin and his last name aint nikles. And he cutt kabrims throat that night at the party becausr they was trying to rob him for his assault rifle!!! This entire story is about everyone i grew up with and around!!!
@@user-fc4ne9le5fDo you know Tyler and his late uncle Jimmy? I live in a similar rural Shit Town here in the UK.
who came here from gabbies podcast
I hate this Alabama guy, even if he is right.
This guy John is so loony I begin to understand why Alabama is conservative
John B is a huge liberal though. Unless that's what you meant lol.
@@TheDoWhat exactly. If climate change were presented to you by someone like this you'd be much less likely to believe it.
@@InterloperBob Maybe you’re not as intelligent as you seem to believe.
Hmmmmmm.............................
Sounds like a bad NPR story.
i’m already sucked in and i’ve barely started
I understand privacy and keeping low key...but the way Brian describes John s property would love to have a video tour!
Watch big bankz, he just visited
This podcast is super important. This is THE podcast.
A little caesars...
Pizza Hut
Ah, I cracked up when he said that 😊
it really is one of the greatest stories ever told
Why I dont get it
My art teacher recommended this to me
I am only 18 minutes in and John 💚
That's crazy! My sister introduced me to this podcast and I literally just texted her verbatim the exact same thing that you said in your comment LOL I am only 18 minutes and 💜 John already
Thank you for sharing his story. This is my second time listening... yes, it's that good.
Seriously? The negativity of John is overwhelmingly hard to listen to.
I have lived in Bibb county all my life and I to know of cover up by police in 1990s in Woodstock al Bibb county police arrested my uncle Jerry Edwards parks convinced him of murder of Ricky Gardener and Jimmy hicks I been told all my life did kill Ricky Gardener but my uncle seats in brent county corrections 20+ years later he still after all these years pleads of his innocence. My mom Vickie parks stood trying to get him released until her dead in July 7 2015 cancer. My uncle was a drunk past out at a party with gardener and hicks everyone who knows all these gentlemen at the party years later has swore and told us Jerry parks in innocent. I'm 30 now they didn't have forensics in Bibb county back then they never found anything pointing to my uncle everyone has told me they put my uncle away on hear say evidence and Jerry didn't do it. My uncle has lost watching his kids grow up , his dad pass and his best friend my mom die. As long as I live I will plead for someone to look over this case and release him before my granny passes with her son in brent county for a murder he never did. Thank you Jennifer Shaw Williams. Born and raised out of Shaw Town not shit town
The same Jimmy Hicks in this story, the one with a bullet still lodged in his head?
Well if he ain't just more entertaining than a blue pony on an autumn Tuesday
Hahahaha!!! Tuesdee
what an interesting and smart man.
Smart men don’t leave their loved ones in the lurch this way.
@@XassawIntelligence mixed mental illness which is highly linked to S**cide.
Sucks the people that own K3 now own Johns land :(
Tanner Handley bro Kyle Burt owns half of bibb county I'm not complaining this saw mill puts food on my table and honestly I think all of this is bullshit or half truths
Is the maze still there?
All John B had to do was put it in a will. Give it to Tyler and his brother. I don't have anything against Mr. BURKES(?) here, he's in the timber business so buying and selling is a part of that. Having said that if John didn't want them to get their hands on it....he could've arranged that.

What don't you understand about the levels of ones' own shame?
The plants gave us all oxygen. Thank you John B.
Someone needs to cast Zach Galifinakis to play this guy asap
Yessssss
Or maybe even a more credible actor, known for roles other than dopey, whacky, mainstream comedies. x
I think Seth would be better
or Rory Scovel
Did you know that the actor who played Buddy Garrity in Friday Night Lights went forward in time to listen to this podcast to figure out his inspiration for his accent, then went back in time to play the role sounding exactly like John?
Lil ceases pizza hut😂😂. I'm from Alabama I used to drive by Woodstock when I was driving from Birmingham to Montgomery. My older cousin who is a little over 80 told me he was in woodstock as a child they came to get all the black kids and electrocuted then but the machine failed when they got to him. I never believed that but now I do
Are you serious?!?! 😳😳😳
What!!??😳😳 What year was that!?
Third time listening. Really such an intriguing story.
My 3rd time as well.
I'm on #13! I love it.
So they are making this into a movie. I wonder if it's gonna be shot down here or where?
They are?
I don't think they did

Ohhhh no, this is like I am back home. I won't tell you where I was....North Georgia. Ohhhh no, I can't take it.....but I can't stop ........I can't stop, the accents, the wood, the trees, dawgs.....only thing comparable is O'Conner's stories.....
Dahlonega?
@@s_1408 Ha, those north east Georgia towns are quaint, were quaint. Hey I have a fantasy that I can interest you in poking int an unsolved murder.....So as a teaser, I want you to imagine a skinny little kid in the middle of the upper west near the dakotas where therre are boring flat horizons on his schwinn bicycle..,..how he got that bike is another matter which would fit but make it longer than you wan to read..so Imaginer this junior high school kid peddling on a long long road from one farming area to another,,,He does this twic e a week, as I recall. He has finished his clases at school and he is on his way to another teacher and another class. This is a very skinny ccheerful but deceptively determined boy. ..He has to be determined because that's how he got the bike. YOu see he has 9 other brothers and sisters.....So this is one reason why I want so some cub reporter from the show to poke around. If a If a kid from a family of 9 other brothers and sisters is murdered. Surely there's enough backgournd inforamtion to fill our a cute adorable character, and set up the listeners for the fall.
I will stop here
Thank you for uploading this here, I find myself coming back to listen to this over and over again. It has helped me process my own grief and has helped me heal over time. Thank you!
still healing but same :)
the music is so good too
His accent is too funny. Such a cool podcast.
Anyone know if there are more than just the 12 episodes I see in the playlist? Im 20 minutes into Ch.1. and love it.
Wow! Like this John! Articulates so well.
You don't.
Cumtowns better
Am I the only one who thinks this would be the most awesome Anime of all time?
What absolute twaddle. Anime? What are you twelve?

david floyd-hoddy Hi
I have a homework about s-town, can you help me?
I have lived in Mccalla, Al.(which is right down the road) my whole life!! This man was a genius!! A little crazy, but who ain't!!!!! I wish I could've met him for real!! I'm thinking about looking for his property and sneaking in! Just thinking!! I just hope it ain't torn down already!!
As someone who grew up in Vance, Alabama, the town right next to Woodstock, I gasped when you said you stayed in Bessemer when theres a Greystone inn in Vance right before you enter Brookwood where all the people from Mercedes’ meet after work 😳😂 But it’s wild I’ve never heard this story, guess it was a bit before my time.
Any ugandan
So interesting !
Did anyone else just start to listen to the first episode and think that maybe John killed the guy and buried him in the maze??? Lol.......I am getting creepy and cringe vibes.
i lived in a hunters house in bibb for a few months and it was a pretty freaky. i eventually moved back to florida because all the freaking things happening to my family. everything seemed so off. it is definitely a place i’d never recommend for someone to live.
You should start a podcast about it, would listen 100%
@haha… LIKE WHAT!!?? Now I’m INTRIGUED!!
Yes..do tell!
Sounds like Mister Garrison
Both are dead now.
Can someone tell me how this all came to be?
I have never heard of this podcast or John b.
I recently came across a video on UA-cam of John B’s abandoned home, and decided to look his name up. I became extremely interested in him and how he came to be and exactly what is this podcast and story ? Can someone give me more details and what is real?
Its all 100% real. The people, the events, the stories all really happened. You should listen to the entire podcast, you never know whats going to happen next. Its hilarious, thought provoking, and heart breaking.
What he left out is how these people care about each other, care for their sickly mama’s, family members, & friends, & so much more. He left out the good that’s here.
WAR DAMN EAGLE
Cumtown is better
This Shit is Gold!

Love the actual meat of the content, but what's up the pretentious intro? You also know there is something off when someone from NPR is getting tired of hearing a dude talk about climate change.
True , only the ignorant who haven't researched believe in "climate change" but those who know have info to prove it's just a part of Agenda 21/30.
Is this real?
Yep
