  • You may be asking-
Is it really possible to narrow practicing down to one most important practice skill?
    And I think yes!
Because in my many years of studying, performing, and teaching music- and having thought about, talked about, and read about all sorts of different practice techniques, practice tips, and practice routines- I’ve found that there is one essential skill that has the biggest impact on our overall progress and potential as musicians.

Capital talk. Great advice for all musicians, all levels, all instruments. Great teacher.

That is definitely good advice! When I practice I find it's like meditating because I'm not thinking about anything else but what I'm doing

Liz, this particular video resonates very strongly with me as a guitar student. I'm not in a position to take private lessons at the moment, so I am literally my own teacher, for now. But I embrace it for several reasons.
I am very interested in exploring new pedagogical approaches, like computer-based training. 💻 I've found some excellent self-study courses which have been developed by experienced teachers for classical guitar and electric/acoustic guitar. These include some really helpful technologies, like the ability to slow/loop practice tracks and software that listens and provides feedback so students can find and fix their mistakes. Yay, computers! 👍👍 But even something as simple as recording your own playing or playing in front of a mirror, as you've suggested, can provide useful feedback that helps students become their own teachers.
Another reason I like being my own teacher is that I have a strong intuition for the guitar, and I want to see where that intuition will take me as I draw on it. Experimenting and discovering things for myself makes me feel like I'm developing a personal relationship with the instrument. Plus, I like directing my own studies because it lets me tailor them to my musical interests, which are quite diverse-or perverse, depending on your point of view. 😁 Someday, I'll release a series of videos called _Music in Inappropriate Styles_ and then you'll all be sorry! 😱
I realize that a good teacher can provide a tailored curriculum too, but that's not an option for me right now. In general, I think it would be ideal to combine live in-person/online instruction with music technology to support self-study and practice. In any case, I am quite sure technology will never put great teachers like you out of a job, Liz! It will hopefully make your job easier, though. Thanks again for all you do! 💗💗💗
