Driver training: 750 bus drivers prepare to go electric | Volvo Buses

Driving technique has an important impact on the energy consumption of an electric bus. In Gothenburg, Sweden, 750 drivers are preparing for one of the biggest transitions to fossil-free city buses in northern Europe.
“It’s very exciting and the drivers who have driven electric buses before are very positive. Thanks to the buses being so quiet and not having any vibrations, you do not get as tired after a working day,” says Ulf Lönnberg, Training Manager at Transdev.
Together with his colleagues, he will train a total of 750 drivers over five weeks. As part of the training, theory is mixed with practical elements such as charging on route and in the depot, as well as driving technique.
Our drivers are experienced and good at driving buses. The big difference as I see it is the charging, it is a completely new situation for most people.

I respect Volvo as a company, as I have been driving Volvo Buses for a long time. However I feel this strategy with battery buses as the wrong signal due to the environmental impact with the production of batteries. Hydrogen power would be a far wiser move in my humble opinion.

Almost 100% of hydrogen today is made from fossil fuels, so not really any environmental improvement. Yes there is an environmental impact on making the batteries but with every kilometer driven that impact goes down. The batteries can then be recycled at the end of life, reducing the impact even further. Hydrogen fuel cell will most likely have it's day, but it's just not ready both technically and environmentally. battery electric is ready now

volvo buses get worse year by year. First drive with 8900 model was shock after 8700. Power steering is not equipment anymore. No heating, no air conditioning, no suspension on chassis, noisy , bad ergonomics etc.
