Thank you for this! For some reason their topical flea medicine said to apply it between the shoulder blades (which is weird bc the other ones I've used in the past have always said to apply to the base of their head) so I followed the instructions and my cat definitely licked it. I was freaking out.

My kitten (7 months) managed to lick some of her medication because she squirmed so much when I was applying it that I applied it off-center. When I saw her gagging and drooling, I panicked and gave her a bath to wash the rest of it off. 😭

I saw that on the package of the dog’s flea treatment, it warns against cats accidentally coming into contact with it, but I don’t see the same warning towards dogs on the flea treatment for my cats. Why is the dog treatment so much worse for cats than the cat treatment seems to be for dogs?

    • @vetnpetDIRECT
      @vetnpetDIRECT  2 місяці тому +2

      Hi,
      Good question!
The main reason that dog flea treatments are not to be used on cats is that many flea treatments for dogs contain ingredients that are safe for dogs but toxic to cats. For example, some dog flea treatments contain permethrin, which is safe for dogs but highly toxic to cats. Cats lack a specific enzyme in their liver that is necessary to metabolise certain chemicals, including permethrin, leading to toxicity when applied to them.
Also, dogs and cats differ in size and metabolism, which means they require different dosages of flea treatment chemicals, using the incorrect product can lead to an overdose.
I hope this helps explains that for you.
      :)

@@vetnpetDIRECT so between dogs being larger (in general) and having more capable immune systems, essentially, they can take on more chemicals that are toxic to cats and cats immune systems are more fragile, so anything that is used on a cat would more likely be safe for a dog as well? (Maybe “immune system” isn’t quite the correct term, but close enough to the idea for me to understand) thank you!!

      Hi Amber,
Most of the time the frothing at the mouth will ease soon, if the symptoms persist you should speak to your vet. You can always try wiping the tongue and mouth, but that is not always easy with a cat. They will normally overcome it with the excessive saliva production and/or washing/licking. But it sounds like you found a way to help.

My kitty licked a fair bit of the moxiclear cat that I put on her by scratching the back of her head and then licking her foot... She has since lost her voice (croaky, quiet meow) and seems to have throat irritation... if I didn't already have a $700 vet bill this week I would have taken her straight in ☠️ but here I am searching the Internet to find reassurance 🙃

      Hi there,
Sounds like a very tricky and determined cat your have. If they are still able to get to the spot-on when placed between the shoulder blades or high on the neck, you could try using an elizabethan collar around the neck just while the medication dries for a few hours.
You could also try other options like a flea collar in combination with worming tablets.
      I hope this helps.

(Not sure bc rescue street kitty got 3 months ago.. they estimated age 6-9 months at rescue. So I guess Emmy is 9-12 months now? I did a few baths w dawn when first got her. Vet checks were good but concern was ear mites. They gave me NexGuard combo topical. I put it on today n she wasn’t pleased so got some on her fur. Let her be for about 3 hours but she’s been itching area n licked. Im grateful to know she’s safe but its still oily on her fur. I have a MDR1 collie she likes to rub against n cuddle. I worry about the oil on fur getting on him and toxicity to him. Will the oil dry or should i wipe her fur with something?

      Hi,
      Thank you for the question.
The Oily residue will start to mix in with the coats natural oils within a day or two and will no longer be noticed. If your dog did happen to get some on them it shouldn't cause them any concerns.
However, something to keep in mind if your dog and cat like to snuggle, most spot on treatments for dogs do contain ingredients that can be very toxic to cats, so therefore I would recommend only using a tablet or chew to treat your dog for fleas, ticks, worms etc, just to be safe.
      I hope this helps

      Hi,
Thank you for the question. Johnson's Vet Cat Flea Pump Spray is not a product we stock and from what I can see not one sold in Australia. As it is not something we stock I can not be sure of the recommendations or side effects. The side effect of drooling is not uncommon when cats taste something they don't like, like a flea spray. I would suggest contacting your veterinarian or the manufacturer. If your cat returns and is still drooling or other symptoms begin to show please contact a vet immediately.

I put it on the bottom back of my cats neck but some got on her fur instead of directly on the skin, she groomed herself afterwards and i freaked out a bit because I didn't notice if it was the treatment (Cassiel-Pet Avermectin) that got on the back of her fur wet or if it was her cleaning herself. Hi,
Thank you for question. Yes you can use a cone to prevent your cat licking their top spot, or if you put it high on the back of the neck they shouldn't be able to reach it. Each product has a different drying time, we do not sell Broadline and I can not find any information on the drying time I'm sorry. You could check with the manufacturer or just check your cat every hour and see. Most treatments are dry in a few hours.

      Hi,
Thank you for your question. There would likely only be a small amount of transfer from the neck to the foot and then they may even walk it off before licking it. If your cat does happen to scratch the area and it is still wet and then they immediately lick their foot you may see some of those mild symptoms listed by Dr Glenn in the video, but they should subside relatively quickly. The spot-on will dry within a few hours and shouldn't be a problem.

      Hi,
Maybe your cat is just trying to groom the run off away, maybe doesn't like the way it makes her fur feel. So perhaps try the gentle wipe off again, hopefully the smell will settle and they won't be interested anymore.
Depending on the product generally, once it is dry, usually 24 hours, it will have been absorbed so hopefully it won't be an issue after that. So I suspect within a day your cat won't be interested anymore and the run off/medication won't be noticed anymore.
Keep an eye on your cat and if concerned please contact your vet.

I applied some to my cat as per the directions. And it’s been awhile since I’ve put some on her seeing as she’s an indoor cat and we don’t have any other pets. But I do plan on taking her outside on a harness with warmer weather around the corner. We were going to bed and she climbed up to her top cat shelf and was leaning over the railing of it looking at me and panting. I of course freaked out because the image of it was quite terrifying after just seeing tik toks where ‘it’s a skinwalker not my pet’😂 but should I be concerned with how she was panting and slightly trembling? I immediately gave her one of her treats after seeing it leaves a bad taste in their mouths, and I even bathed her using 3 rounds of soap to really make sure I could get as much of it off as possible. She seems to be ok now, but she definitely is acting way more cuddly than usual and is still breathing a little fast

      Hi Sarah,
Thank you for your question. If the panting and trembles stopped that is good. Did she lick the spot on do you think or was this a reaction to the medication itself? If it was a reaction I would consider speaking to your vet about the side effects before using again. If it was because of licking it I would make sure that you put it up higher on the neck so she can not reach it.
Please keep in mind if you have washed it off before it has been absorbed your cat may not be protected as expected.

There is always a chance that a pet could react to a safe flea treatment. If it is causing fur loss and skin irritation I would recommend that your do not continue to use the product as they are likely reacting to something in that particular treatment.

@@vetnpetDIRECT hi thanks for your answer .but that's a problem cats they can reach with their paws to back off their neck and between their shoulders soon as they feel something wet gone on their fur. And then liking their paws with poison. Make my cats so many time sick .why dogs got tablets for flee and worms together like nexgard spectra and nothing like this for cats.and obviliosly dogs not so flexible as a cats .for cats should be tablets or syrup or paste....

I believe the risk is very low of them scratching the flea treatment and then licking their paw, I have not heard of any cats becoming sick or having side effects after doing this.
There are plenty of intestinal worming tablets available for cats that you could use instead but there aren't any flea tablets that I am aware of. You could use a flea collar, like Seresto, for the Flea protection and then give a worming tablet for worms.
      I hope that helps.

hello my cat scratched his head using ng his paws and he keeps on licking his fur im so worried something bad might happen because a friend of mine told me that her friend’s cat died bc the cat ingested broadline, a flea treatment:(

      Hi,
      Thank you for the question.
As Dr Glenn explains in this video generally the main side effect of a topical spot on flea treatment is excessive drooling, provided you have used a treatment specifically for cats. However, if you noticed any of signs such as lethargy, repeated vomiting or seizures please contact your veterinarian immediately. If your cat will not stop licking you could try rinsing the paw off. Once the top spot dries it won't transfer to his paw anymore.
      I hope this helps
      :)

I put Harts Ultra Guard on my kitties and I think they licked it. I’m worried cause I’m at work and can’t watch them. Do you think they’ll be okay? They seemed fine for the hour and a half I was home after putting it on them and I put it between the shoulder blades but it ran down one of their necks. Should I call a vet when I get home?

      Hi,
I hope your kitties are doing ok. If you return from work and see any worrying signs of vomiting, being disorientated, wobbling please contact your veterinarian immediately.
I hope they were fine when you got home.

      Hi,
I am glad we could help alleviate some of the concern. Please keep an eye on your cat just in case, and next time remember to put it on the back of the neck or between the shoulder blades.

Hello! I have five cats and planning to use a spot on treatment for all of them. Would it be helpful to use a collar on everyone to prevent them from licking it from each other?

    • @vetnpetDIRECT
      @vetnpetDIRECT  Рік тому

      Hi Jean,
      Thank you for your question.
If you are concerned about the cats licking each other absolutely a flea collar will eliminate that risk. Just keep in mind collars can cause other risks such as getting court on branches etc, if they are outdoor cats. But if your cats don't tend to groom each other then you will probably be safe with a spot on treatment. Or try keeping the cats separated until the treatment dries, to reduce the risk (can take a few hours).
      I hope this helps.

Hi! I accidentally put advantage II for cats on my cat where he can definitely reach. Im supervising him so carefully! How long should i wait to relax and for the stuff to dry? Does it really take 24 hours? Thanks!

    • @vetnpetDIRECT
      @vetnpetDIRECT  Рік тому

      Hi,
Looking at the product information yes it looks like it could take up to 24 hours to dry, I would just keep checking if you want to. Most likely they will only lick it once, because of the bitter taste it will make them salivate and possibly run around a little crazy, but hopefully once would be enough for them. But so keep an eye on them and take them to the vet if any symptoms develop that you are concerned about.
      I hope that helps

My cats licked each other's off after I went to bed, but it was still on them for 8 hours. Will the product still work?

      Hi,
      Thank you for the question.
8 hours for any top spot should be enough time for absorption, so they should be fine.
      I hope this helps.
