Yeah if he wanted to do this, he has to respond to activating the Emperors not the ward payment
UW player missed a lot of lines. Game 1 out was quick study maybe find get lost, make token with wanderer and then kill vein ripper. Still a shitty spot but an out nonetheless.
UW running Lay Down Arms may come back due to this deck running around
I feel that the rakdos vamp deck is a hard match up for anyone as it has a lot of outs and power behind it

The ward trigger goes on the stack, so you can cast something in response, and destroying the token makes it so that the ability gets countered.

Ward is a trigger that goes on the stack. With that on the stack, he Bitter Triumphs the only creature Garrison controls. Garrison then has no creature to sacrifice to pay the Ward trigger. They did everything correctly.
