      He couldn't even lug his bag to the taxi.
      Chase didn't read into that.
      Whatever image chase has of his father, in this moment, is better than whatever his father is going to become widdling away in a hospital bed. I'm not saying it's right, but you have to look at it from the dad's perspective.
      Meanwhile, this is the guy that rationalized leaving his son despite having a promising medical career and knowing exactly what alcoholism and mental health will do to his mom - and vicariously, him.
      He's not a good person, he cuts and runs when things aren't perfect. It's why he didn't worry about the diagnosis because it *appeared* to be ok. It's why he went to wilson and his diagnostic department to confirm his diagnosis. It has to be perfect. It's why he appears so prim and proper, because he's attempting to cover up his sickness. He's all about appearances and being prim.
      Not about getting actually get the job done properly - like fathering.

      @@BigMac8000 Exactly people who never been in this situation can't rationalize his actions, as much of scumbag his father was, the best thing he can do for him at this point is to leave his son with an image of his father standing still . When people are terminally ill, time no longer hold the same value it once did since they are almost unconscious and out of touch with of their surroundings, laying there a weak and defeated version of someone who once represented a completely different thing . Chase Senior is such an emotional story. An old man, getting close to death, is reflecting on his life and the choices he made. He knows he completely failed as a father and he desperately wants to make things right before the end. Emphasis on WANTS, but he doesn't have a clue how. He knows his son will reject any apology he tries to make, push him away, so what can he do? Yet the old man still tries. He hides the fact that he's about to die because he doesn't want his son to feel pressured to forgive. Chase Senior wants it to be a genuine earned forgiveness. At the same time, he knows he won't live long enough to actually earn it. His appearance in this episode is so tragic, it's the story of a dying man trying to earn something and knowing he will fail, but he tries anyway.

    This portrayal of estranged father and son is excellent; it's a side of Chase we don't see again. It's also a great example of how many of us men do not handle emotions well at all, outside of anger.

    • @atuljha6128
      @atuljha6128 4 роки тому +31

      @HEAV¥HAND not really. You can't call it handling emotions if there's no resolution and moving on. Most guys simply don't do that, they just lash out in anger and unchecked aggression for every uncomfortable emotion. Super denialistic in addressing the issue too tbh. And then guys like you who think showing emotion without lashing out is "feminine" somehow, largely because you wanna be "stoic" without knowing what stoicism is all about and then shaming those who don't fall in the same repressed emotional category as you, thus creating a harmful environment for anyone who doesn't fit the bill.

    • @Mr.Monacle
      @Mr.Monacle 4 роки тому +14

      @HEAV¥HAND Feels like an incredibly self-destructive mindset actually. Repression is a psychological tool like any other, but implying that's how "men" should handle their emotions both undermines the tool and also comes off as incredibly sexist. Additionally overuse of any psychological tool can impede your social life and lower your quality of life, so relying on repression exclusively will only lead to misery. Your experience isn't universal is what I'm trying to say, what worked for you won't necessarily work for Jim Bob three doors down. Also, weird segue, but thank you for serving.

    • @bellah.5235
      @bellah.5235 3 роки тому +23

      @HEAV¥HAND we shouldn't be teaching men their only options are bottling up emotions or lashing out. no wonder male suicide rates are through the roof as they are often reluctant to seek psychological support and why male perpetrators of domestic abuse statistically tend to do the most physical damage to their spouses and children that require them to be hospitalized. there's nothing "manly" about senseless violence and bereavement, it is vital we raise our boys to have a healthy relationship with their emotions and how they express them just like we do our daughters! emotions aren't just masculine OR feminine, they're irrevocably human and a part of our nature!

    • @Mr.Monacle
      @Mr.Monacle 3 роки тому +10

      @HEAV¥HAND I literally never said that thing that you're quoting there. What I said was that what you said was potentially harmful and comes off as sexist. The perception of masculinity isn't actually a bad thing, btw, men and women *are* different, demonstrably so, when it comes to psychology (even when removing cultural biases), but the idea that a man *should* act a certain way is basically the definition of toxic masculinity directed at other men. It tends to be self-destructive as well. I don't think anything I said was particularly biased: point of fact, I would say what *you* said comes off as far more biased than any of my claims. You used a psuedo-authoritative appeal by saying you were a first-responder in the military in an effort to cover for the vagueness of what you said. You then followed that up by implying that if a girl were to do the same job, she'd fall apart. I use imply here, because what you said made *0* sense grammatically. Maybe you just meant if a man were to handle his emotions like a woman, he'd fall apart (which isn't better, by the way, might be worse). There have been numerous first-responders in the military; doubtless numerous among those have been women. Heck, even if there had *never* been a female first responder in the military up to, and including, right now; what you said still doesn't carry any weight because being a first-responder does *not,* in fact, make you an expert on gender based psychology, making that appeal to your authority on the matter ultimately meaningless.

    “He’s your dad”, and “this is toxic” always annoyed TF out of me. I’m a child abuse survivor, I got diagnosed with cPTSD and PTSD over a decade ago, what would be “toxic” would be trying to force me to talk to my mother who not only abused me herself, but encouraged my bio brother to physically attack me regularly which put me in hospital. I escaped young, I got help from a young persons charity, I moved away so I could be free. Forcing me to talk to my abusive family would set me back mentally, where my PTSD would be constantly triggered and I’d be living on edge. I’ve never understood why folk say “oh but she’s your mother/he’s your father”, like that’s supposed to absolve your parent of the abuse, where you’re expected to forgive them when you know they’d happily do it again, when you know speaking to them wouldn’t be healthy at all… yet folk feel entitled to try and force you into an abusive and toxic situation, so they can feel morally right. They don’t care about how it affects you, they just wanna feel responsible for creating an estranged family hallmark movie scene where everyone runs up to hug each other.

    I think he came to see Chase to tell him he was dying. But when Chase brought up his dead Mum, he could see how Chase still hadn't got over his Mother's death. So in that moment he knew Chase would never be able to handle the truth of his stage 4 cancer, which is why he decided against telling him.
    Edit: For those curious. I actually think there's a reason why Rowan cut chase out of his will. Probably because he suspected House told chase about Rowan dying, as Chase was behaving a little emotional as he sent Rowan off to the airport, after being all cold to him at the Hospital - which is a drastic change in behaviour. From his change in attitude, Rowan might have thought Chase was being ingenuine with his emotions (hording anger towards him for Chase's mother's death) in his send off to get that inheritance money. Let's be real, Rowan is wealthy, he could've easily cancelled his flight or even taken Chase with him in the Taxi to spend some father-son time. Its not like he was going to need his millions with 3 months left to live right?. I think he gave Chase the cold shoulder (rejecting to spend some time with him), because he felt sick by the idea of spending time with Chase. Because, all he could think was that his son was trying to take advantage of him in his final days. He obviously held a grudge on his death bed, wondering why Chase knew and never visited and punished chase based on that. I think this is further emphasized When Rowan asked chase "Are you visiting Oz anytime soon?", you can see he suspects Chase knows, and testing if he will confess that he knows the truth about his cancer - to which Chase doesn't (as he doesn't know), making him disgusted with his son.

    • @wobby1268

      Hmm. That's a very charitable take on Rowan's actions, and one I've never seen presented before. I like it. 😎 I'd like to believe it, too, but I can't, not after Rowan inexplicably cut Chase out of his will.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 3 роки тому +26

      I think that's rosier than the circumstances support. It seems like this is more-or-less the first time Chase has seen his dad since his dad abandoned him with his alcoholic mother when Chase was 15. I think he wanted to see Chase one last time, but was too much of a coward to tell him why, as it would be difficult, and difficult situations are what he runs from and dumps in Chase's lap. And none of that explains why he refused to tell Chase he was dying in the period between his visit and his death. He couldn't write one email?
      Finally, if Chase's well-being was truly his concern, allowing Chase to be completely blindsided by his upcoming and inevitable death is a strange way to show it.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 3 роки тому +12

      @Stellvia Hoenheim They're doctors in a learning fellowship at a teaching hospital. They're not starving, but they don't seem to be raking-in the cash, either. Losing the family money actually causes Chase quite a bit of trouble in later episodes, to the extent that he starts double-dipping by taking vacation pay in one department while working full-time for pay for House.

    Chase's dad didn't come to see his son one last time. He came to see Wilson about his cancer. House involved him in the diagnosis for the patient to get father and son together. He didn't even want to spend some time with him at the end, when his son clearly made na effort to come see him and ask him to have a drink together. It might have been what he needed, some closure. But his dad didn't want ro be bothered and made feel guilty. What a horrible person. But a lot of successful doctors are sociopaths or at least narcissists.

    Cameron was so in the wrong for how she initiated and handled that conversation. As someone who has been in Chase’s position many times with Camerons trying to force me to forgive or accept my abusive parent, News Flash. Kids don’t develop hatred or spitefulness of that level without a reason. We are biologically programed to love and be loyal to our parents. Whatever they did to cause their child to want to have nothing to them is That bad, and its traumatic even in just having to explain it to another person. Its a horrible feeling justifying why you’re protecting yourself from an abusive or toxic person.
    I had a person do this to me and normally I’m a fairly calm and relaxed person, but I just wasn’t having it that day and the person said “He’s your dad! I know he was really strict with you but get over it already, you’re in your late twenties! Its not like he did anything That bad!” And I just stared the person in the face and said “You want to know just ONE of the reasons why I won’t ever talk to him or see him ever again? HE TRIED TO KILL ME! MORE THAN ONCE! He literally picked me up by the back of the neck, and threw me like a fucking football down a flight of stairs!! So don’t talk to me about ‘it couldn’t have been that bad because you don’t know a fucking thing!”
    There are exceptions to every rule of course. But I’d say 98% of people who keep a parent at arms length (or further) have a good reason. And its not anybody else’s business why, or to give us advice on what to do about it. We figured out what to do about it without any of your help, thanks.

    Ngl I hated how everyone was telling Chase to give his dad a chance. Sure his dad's dying but the guy still left Chase with his alcoholic mother (who according to his dad was falling apart long before he left) and basically made him pick up the pieces. If he was my dad I'd punch him in the face and never speak to him again.

    Noticed a hint of Hugh's British accent in "I suppose it isn't" after Father Chase says, 'It's not your business'.

    Cameron as Chase's stepmom would have been spicy TV in the second season.

      House isn’t 3 times older than her but he is a lot older and she still had a thing for him.
