The accumulator can act as a receiver during the heating and defrost cycles when system imbalance or an overcharge from field service could result in excessive liquid refrigerant in the system. The accumulator can store the refrigerant until needed and feed it back to the compressor at an acceptable rate What is the function of suction accumulator in refrigeration system? The function of a suction line accumulator in a heat pump or refrigeration system is to catch and hold any unused portion of the system charge. The device must also prevent liquid slugging of the compressor and excessive refrigerant dilution of the compressor oil. What is the accumulator in a freezer? As an option on freezers, the “cryo-accumulator” plates can be used to delay the temperature rise in the event of a breakdown/shutdown of the appliance. These plates, placed in the internal dead volume of the freezer, are designed to reduce the internal dead volume, and increase the thermal inertia of the freezer. Where is refrigerant accumulator? It is located on the low-pressure side of the circuit between the evaporator outlet and the compressor suction port. The accumulator has different roles: To provide compressor protection, preventing compressor failure due to liquid slugging. An accumulator, more accurately termed a 'suction accumulator, is a device used in vapour compression refrigeration systems to prevent liquid refrigerant from flooding back to the compressor. The reason we want to avoid liquid refrigerant from getting back to the compressor is that low temperature liquid hitting the hot valve plate(s) can crack them and destroy the compressor. Additionally, compressors are designed to compress refrigerant vapour, not liquid. Vapour being a gas is readily compressible. Liquid is not.
