I get so lost in my head on a regular basis two minutes in I wouldn’t even see the wall anymore.
same here 100%

That's why you need to practice. We were programmed in school to problem solve and live in our heads. It takes practice to be present to reality. For me riding motorbike is one of the most powerful exercises. If you get distracted you fall.
@@musicaparaler2139 you are mistaken. the ability to entertain yourself inside your own head without outside stimulus is literally the whole point of this exercise
@@William-Morey-Baker that's not the point of meditation. The point of meditation is to witness the mind and to be okay with whatever happens. If entertaining thoughts are present cool but if angry or bored thoughts come that's cool too. In meditation you learn to witness the mind and see what it's up to. You get to see all the agendas and stories the mind creates and in that awareness you get a chance to break free from thinking and become present.
Goggins has been staring for two weeks straight
While running a marathon down the Mariana Trench with no diving equipment
thinking about who's soul will be taken next.
I don't know my father
Who’s gonna carry the boats
As soon as I heard “stare at a wall for an hour”, I got scared and maybe that proves I need to do it.😅
You definitely need to do it. That is a ridiculous thing to be scared of hahaha
I think you might be right.
That part of your mind who was scared and will try to convince you not to do it, that is your ego
After I listened to him, I tried a few weeks ago and I recommend this. You are going to be able to really listen to you. I stopped believing in my excuses, because I saw my own lies to not doing what I should.
Staring at a wall was how we got punished in elementary school detention
Solitary confinement is a punishment for people who are already in prison. That's how much having no stimulus sucks for the human brain.
Old
Then I guess that just shows how much power there is to being comfortable with being bored, because that doesn't sound like a punishment to me at all. I'd consider that the same as being allowed to leave class and do whatever I wanted, because I could stare at a wall and entertain myself without external stimulus easy (by coming up with stories, thinking about whatever things interested me in the moment, daydreaming, etc).
Well, at least, it wouldn't have been a punishment for child me. As I grew up, it became harder to do that kind of stuff, and boredom became harder and harder to tolerate. So to me, it seems like this is indeed a muscle that you can train and which atrophies with disuse, but that's just my perspective.
Which means this might be a powerful way to decondition the response to that. This time it's voluntary. Neurophysiologically that makes it a whole different animal.
Ive done this practice multiple times this month and I LOVE IT. Its really difficult to get myself to do it sometimes, like right now. I have so many emotions/thoughts I recognize Im ignoring/suppressing which makes it harder to start. But its so so worth it, every time. It feels like the dopamine rush from eating junk food, but it lasts longer, and isnt bad for me. It feels amazing, I have such profound thinking and self discovery. Did I already say I love it? God bless all of Dr. K's teachings and care for us
Taking inspiration from this video I did this last night and hell I must be bored the whole time because it felt less boring than when I'm always on social media. My mind started sorting out problems that I've been grappling with, I felt all of my intrusive thoughts exfoliate and a lot of discomfort for this period of time but after more wall staring they vanished and I felt a sense of deep peace. Very interesting.
🧢
As someone that can barely stand watching a UA-cam video on normal speed, I can definitely relate to the boredom intolerance thing 😂
x2 club checking in.. 😅
And it takes soooo long to untrain that short attention span, but takes absolutely nothing to relapse
@@L3eh123 BROOOO WAHT
@@L3eh123 I use a browser extension to watch things at even faster speeds than 2x. Do I need help? LOL
That's no laughing matter. I would try to fix that as soon as possible. You can't develop personality by relying on things other people have created; fact.
Learning to be bored is a skill that so few people nurture now. It is such a good skill to have.
Yes!!! This is why I love church on Sunday. Since I have no self control I get 2-3 hours of no screen time (unless I’m using the phone in place of my physical scriptures that given Sunday). 😊
Same. The only thing to think about is your church community and how to improve as a person. Nothing to distract you.
Oh... When I was a kid I always wondered how in the world could adults tolerate such boredom as Sunday sermons, like it really perplexed me & no one could give me an answer that made sense. I never imagined, even well into my adult life, that maybe they are actively seeking it out specifically because of boredom, perhaps even out of boredom in some cases... It's like bored-ception
@@mokshalani8414 lol! This is funny actually haha. I love church though, even if the messages are similar each week. I need to leave the darkness and nuttery of secular life if even just on Sunday for a few hours. As a LDS, it’s also why I’m thankful for the temples where I can go a little deeper and completely away from the secularist mind drain lol.
Moksha bored-ception?
I ensure I don't carry phones to church and avoid tech on Sundays, so you're detoxing and staying halal at the same time.
Thank you for sharing! A lot of the time we are doing things to escape our own mind. Meditation gives me power to control the mind rather than escape 👏
Really good point
I lived in Nigeria when I was 8 for a year in 1999. There were 1-5 hour long time spans the electricity was off. I learned to sit in the dark (home alone) the whole time, imagining tv shows, other fun activities and talking to my inner self. You can’t imagine how terrifying that is (it’s like sensory deprivation torture, plus there were sound lizards scurrying around outside), i made an alter ego, where I was a more terrifying entity than anything that scared me.
So, I’m well trained to do without technology, though I’m a software developer.
Technically, being able to hear your own voice in your head and talking through things is good for your mind.
An inner monologue is a sign of higher intelligence, I'm pretty sure.
That’s such a cool coping mechanism for a kid to adopt. Total chad move. Most kids can’t even fathom themselves as anything other than helpless.
I did double that. It was for a remembrance day ceremony. I was in air cadets and got to be one of the cadets holding a flag. Not only did I hold that flag for two hours, I made it my mission to be a statue and stare at one spot until it was all over and time to move.
It absolutely was "complete torture with no benefit" and I don't know why I did it.
My head is super chatty. Boredom is rarely an issue. Many thoughts are about self reflection but lots are also just random analytical or philosophical stuff about things that arent really relevant to my everyday life and that i will forgot about 15 mins later. I enjoy watching my breath, cooking or gaming cause it makes my mind go quiet for once
Chris, longtime listener/subscriber/fan here. Love your content and thought provoking questions and topics. But why do you never link to the studies, polls, and surveys that you talk about on Instagram and in your 3MM newsletters? Cheers!
The Kingpin was taught this as a punishment by his father in the Daredevil TV show
Combine this with the do nothing technique by Shinzen Young.
Well I do that daily,to gather thoughts,to work better on my project, the worst part is that its not boring for me.
It’s giving “men who stare at goats” hahahhaa
I stare at walls on a regular basis
Stare at a wall for 23 hours a day. That's what solitary confinement is like.
Actually, no.
Don't ask, lol....
Might not be too hard if you do it stoned🤷🏽♀️
I do force myself at least once a day to just lie in bed, with earplugs, and just shut my eyes. Sometimes I fall asleep, so I do set a timer for 20-30 minutes. It’s a great mental reset, and even though the mental chatter is uncomfortable, after it’s over I realize how much BS my mind has been occupied with.
I’ll also do “no tech” sessions, such as driving to or from work without listening to anything, no screens or music when eating alone, etc.
I like this. Good mind training.
I do that no music thing. I almost never listen to music while in a car by myself. The result is improved concentration and a sense of slowing down and looking at the world clearly. People who can't go 5 minutes without turning music on are missing out
@@matthewmosier8439 If I'm doing a long-ish drive like commuting I don't mind listening to a podcast, but if it's anything less than 10 minutes I just take it as an opportunity to step away from media consumption. Before, I would spend minutes trying to find a song or podcast to put on, only for a 2 or 3-minute drive.
If I'm lying down without my physical senses picking up any sensations, my mind tends to self-entertain after a little while anyway
I would much rather stare at a wall than run a marathon. Pushing myself mentally is easier than physically
Just tried it and I gotta say, the biggest challenge was not falling asleep.
I use to do this a lot as a kid. It's actually pretty nice, you naturally feel motivated to do things after a while. I don't do it as often now because of the infinite distractions, but when I do, I feel good.
Did this today. The hour felt like a whole day
I did that a lot when I was locked in solitary confinement for 4 months.
this is so damn profound. I am a lifelong reader since childhood. starting with comics to hundreds of books, multiple genres. starting in 2012, when my smartphone got a data plan, I stopped reading almost overnight. my attention span was shot to Hell. it wasn’t until I got rid of my iPhone last year that I’ve started to read again. a dozen books so far…and boredom again! sweet, sweet boredom…
My mind would be wandering around wildly. Almost everyone in my family have some degree of ADHD.
I get this feeling at my job the boredum expands the mind.
Interesting idea. I'll give it a try
I just ruminate and ruminate until i cant sleep if i have no stimulus , I cannot sleep without a podcast
definitely DO NOT try weed for sleeping. it will crush your sleep cycles and your deep sleep. you will feel like shit in the morning and then develop dependency on weed to fall asleep, continuing the cycle.
Just go off the internet half an hour before going to sleep, let your mind calm down from the stimuli throughout the day.
@@FerrisMcLaurenweed sends my ADHD brain into rumination overdrive
Exercise and do community service

Every soldier ever.....i didn't know I was a meditation master.
No problem. I've lived alone for almost 10 years, and was bed bound for several years in the early 90s before the internet and smartphones, so had to spend hours with very little outside entertainment. So time alone with only my thoughts is almost a hobby these days.
MAN the 90's were quiet.
I won't be bored. I live in my head. I will have lived a complete alternate life lol
Im going to try. You did make me think hmmm might re-new my playstation network thing and play video games for something different though haha
As a person who paints walls for a living, I see this as an absolute wall…I mean..win.
Literally look at the wall
When I was a child I was staring at wall for long time, same with the sky... after some time like half hour I could see tunnel, depends sometimes it was going forward, sometimes it was going towards me... with time I could see grey shapes around furniture. I understood what happens when I encounter one of the lectures from Dr Jordan Peterson... amazing 😮 still happens sometimes, rarely but it does
Lmao this is regards d
Try being in a cell for months on end and have to stare at a wall. You either go crazy or your mind gets stronger
Heh... I was in the Navy in the 90's, spent god knows how many 8 hour watches in CIC staring at unpowered CRT screens connected to unloaded missile systems, can I handle boardom, oh, hell ya.
I’ve been bored for years…I win! 😂
Ive said for a long time "one of the biggest problems of mankind is they can't sit in a room for a half hour and do nothing."
Thats is pretty damn close. Thanks again dr k
Me painting a wall
Dang I missed a spot
U mean being in a hospital and ur tv doesn't work and ur phone has no wifi? Yea thats easy to just stare at the wall lol
For me, it’s just another day.
Try a dead end job for 30 years.
About that last part...
I told myself I was going to do this "tomorrow" like 3 months ago
Did you do it now?
I did it right after waking up one day, it was very insightful. definitely worth doing. I thought about lots of things, and realized that by constantly stimulating myself I was preventing myself from having productive thoughts@@ihaar
Depends how good the weed is.
Or a tree or something fractal
To maximize the experience one should don a tight fitting dunce cap when staring at a wall...
I don't need to play a video game or watch youtube, but I do NEED to be doing something, I would probably spend the time staring at the wall planning a project or something and completely miss the point of the exercise.
I am going to try
So basically when you stood in a corner as a kid.
I can do it just fine I can day dream for hours lost in thought
Soto Zen
Yes, that’s what happens when your grandma put you in the corner and forgets you lol. Cutting off all outside stimulant forcing yourself to only focus on you pulling up and drawing from what is beneath the surface can give you a different range of experiences, and how you handle them can depend on who you were and how you are and acceptance in between and meditating to overcome these, can better you or can drive you mad that’s why solitary is beneficial for some and horrible for others
Middle of the short i just put on a timer for 1h and started, fucking miserable experience, but i didnt break! didnt cry but it was miserable, by the end i was thanking god if he exists for every moment im not in this shit
Staring at a wall is the last stage expert mode. Forget that. For most of us, the simple task of staring at a television program for an hour would be immensely beneficial. When’s the last time you actually sat and watched TV with no phone?
Turn on a game of baseball and watch that for an hour, and you’ll probably feel immensely bored if you’re not used to it, yet you’ll probably notice a strange sense of calm overtake you eventually.
Then when you’ve mastered that, do a sudoku or some type of puzzle for an hour.
Then move on to reading a nonfiction book for an hour.
And then finally finish with staring at a wall.
Dudes have never been in the armed forces.
Question. Why is boredom or not doing anything at all ok?
I didnt see anything different..
I don't see why this is so difficult. I grew up in the 90s. I often found myself lying in bed and thinking about things. I still like to do it now, but I don't have as much time. I play brain exercises that improve my memory.
Why is it so horrible to be alone with your own thoughts?
Easy task with the right weed
Easy. I could sit and think/imagine all day if it was possible.
Too easy ngl
Helpful tho
Fuck, this is what i used to do
another powerful meditation is ghee candle watching.
I’ve done that! Thanks for the reminder. I’m gonna try again.
@@chrisk9613 Your welcome it's used to balance the fire element in the body bees wax is is also recommended.
I can easily stare at a wall and get lost in my head. my personality type makes me a natural "day dreamer" and I actually do this all the time haha I don't know why staring at a wall makes my imagination go wild
Who said staring at a wall is boring. Bored is not a part of my vocabulary. I can think and daydream and talk to myself for hours. I enjoy being in my head. I need no outside stimulation. I enjoy silence and my own company. I love what he says about tolerance for boredom. I would change it to tolerance for stillness and/or silence and/or solitude. All three.
i am the same but the challenge would be to stare at the wall while only focusing on the wall and not letting the mind wander. Since i create infinite interesting conversations with myself i find that i get into my own head when i get bored of others talking and it's difficult to control
Crazy thing is we are using tech to watch this
😂Instead of meditation, i clean the floor and bathroom everyday for 10 minute without thinking of anything. Just clean it, and feel relax. 😊😊
Using time wiser than starring at the wall
Oh Wow!
I'm not sure if it's wiser necessarily, but different. It's a good alternative but you do lose some of the qualities a prolong staying with yourself would give you
I'll do you one better I'll stare at two walls for an hour
this is only fun on LSD
Does sitting in a room quietly count?
8 years active duty Army. I enjoy being bored.
Lol...
Ahaha my mans never had a long commute to work. Try driving 2hrs each hour for work everyday. Staring at a wall is easy compared to the frustration AND boredom of driving, you could actually let your mind go and lean into a thought
yea, it's so much cheaper than buying a gaming pc and a game .. just learn to stare at a wall and endure it! xD
I don’t even get to use my phone while I’m at work. Too damn busy so I know I’m good.
I'm gonna try this lol
And?
@@Mr.Dodo- he ded
Can I just go out for walk in nature without any distractions instead ?A
I grew up in the 60s and 70s and when we were bored we would make up games or read a book. It was all about imagination.
I saw Jesus, not Christ. My friend from Mexico he sells weed.
Instead of staring at a wall, stare in a mirror. Perhaps you'll see something in yourself that you hadn't seen before
Does it have to be the same spot of the wall?
Its should train boredem. Just don't spin a basketball while staring at a wall and you should be fine. XD
Have you trained your mind to be bored?
Clearly this man hasnt talked to many veterans or military service members. Staring at walls for hours and waiting for hours with no purpose are our specialties.
Only boring ppl get bored. Be interesting.
I literally tell everyone that I’m the only person that could be dropped off at a deserted island and not go insane… in fact, have a good time. I always forget and have my phone on silent for a whole day and then my phone is booming the following day 😵💫 but I grew up in a time where the internet didn’t exist and my parents were too cheap to buy cable -anything really. I just learned to entertain myself.
Sounds like a waste of time, I could be pumping iron with that spare hour
While staring at the wall. Good point.
