- ■ SRI LANKA, BANDARAWELA: After the rock bottom prices at the Haputale market shopping spree I knew it was impossible to find cheaper goods in the city of Bandarawela. But after the street barber rejected me for a shave I had some time to spare before my bus back to Ella.
So I decided to go for yet another mega bargain hunt trip at the largest market in this part of Sri Lanka: Bandarawela Market.
As usual I met quite a few characters. None as wild as the now legendary 'Yes Man of Haputale', but one did come close: The Bandarawela Market Playah, who proudly (and unapologetically) was parading around with what others described as: NOT his wife!

The local winner of five separate lotteries still claims that the tickets were all bought by a white man. We are getting reports that this outrageous claim might be supported by other witnesses. Many have come forth with tales of the wandering white man... these tales go from the somewhat mundane to the unbelievable. He purchased a spoon and carried it like a scepter of a monarch; which, when coupled with ornamentation that he purchased and wore (a cap worn backwards negating all benefits of sun blocking as well as a peace sign necklace) has caused many locals to believe he was insane and saw himself as a conquering invader who was now espousing peace. He even seemed concerned with a man's wife at home while he purchased goods for his girlfriend in the market and then wanted to play a game in which the philanderer would be a primary player. The final report was a man selling bags who, after selling one to the obviously insane man, received the unofficial title of ambassador and wears the monarch's crown to this day. We will keep you updated...

The reason I respect what you do is this; I spent a two week holiday in Jamaica, and even though the people seemingly had nothing, they were so so happy. So helpful, and so uplifting, on day 5 of my stay we had a cat 5 hurricane and the whole place was wiped out, not the hotels, but the local residencies. I spent 6 days helping out chopping up trees, and moving rubble. The guy I was helping was named Oliver, he worked at the Wyndham rose hall resort, what I didn't understand was that even though his home was destroyed, here he was working, so I asked him, and he said he was working to earn money to build a new home. My heart stopped, and I realised what privilege is. He invited me to meet his family, and I ended up giving him all my spending money for the trip, which may have been about 600gbp, he broke down and was so exhilarated. I told him it means more to you than it does to me, so take it. So yeah I totally get it. The one thing I learned was that happiness is definitely not bought.

Buying local does not mean condemning another country with a thumbs down. You'd say I prefer a something made locally. Everything is made in China cheaply because cheap people can only buy cheap things, they can't afford quality products.

Thats the difference in the developing countries and the developed countries (on "its made in china") that people here is so poor that they almost forgotten the fact that sailing other countries products will eventually harm there own cultural arts which is more precious,

Its not just Sri Lanka man, competition has killed all sorts of traditional industries. When I was in Bosnia i spoke with stone carvers of which once there were a lot and they said they were run out of business by grave stones made in china and imported. Same story was with worked copper decorative products. In Iran I visited the bazaars which were flooded with cheap Chinese crap, knockoffs and imitations. They mentioned the same thing about their traditional crafts like carpets, silk, wood working etc. So sad.

Now in india people are now getting aware about this problem and the attraction towards the handicrafts products are again growing up,
People here in india started boycotting the Chinese products as much as possible which is a good sign
@@mohit0953 that is good to hear that some awareness has come back but sadly the dirt cheap prices will always win. Its a crazy world. I remember the days we would mend clothes when ripped. Reuse, etc. You would fix your radio, phone, etc - because manufactured goods were expensive and food and housing were cheap. Now those items become disposable. We throw away a cell phone because it is not the newest. Last years clothes because they are not in fashuon. We'll destroy this planet real quick.

FYI "SIR HARALD" whenever you see that kind of coconut don't ask to make juice out of it,that is not for drinking anymore,that is old coconut which is normally use for cooking already,. (coconut milk)
We have ones here in India which look the same but do have water in it. And it is much better tasting than the green/yellow ones. I can't believe you guys don't sell that kind.
@@megalith7796 yeah this old coconut too still have juice inside and nice for drinking too but same here in the Philippines we normally sell this for cooking,for the meat inside is already old and more uses than just the yellow/green coconut which specifically for drinking. or it's your choice actually if you want to eat the soft meat in it or just throw it.. 😊

Hey Harald, the one you drank in Cambodia is "Kurumba" which is what it's known as here. Very rare to find them since we usually use the green ones for cooking and the red ones for drinking. Kurumba indeed is much sweeter than the orange one, although I still prefer Thambili over Kurumba xD
Maybe it's due to the high level of sugar within them that they choose these trees to make toddy and vinegar.
