It was interesting when school was compared to being in prison. I've heard that people who have been in prison for a long time often commit more crimes when they get out, so that they'll be sent back to prison. They've been in prison for so long that they don't know how to live outside of prison. Maybe there's a similar situation with people who can't imagine a world without forced schooling.

Schooling does not equal education. Degree does not equal success. Parenting does not start when you have children but when you evaluate how you were parented.

If you enjoyed this, I would recommend The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education by Grace Llewellyn & The Independent Scholar's Handbook by Ronald Gross

I really love and appreciate this conversation! I completely agree and love John Holts teachings! I am currently unschooling my toddler and it’s been quite interesting. I am also de schooling my self as a parent! It’s interesting to reflect and now practice my own family values

I’m so curious what you mean in minute 10 - how and who wanted to get rid of Catholics and where can we learn more about what their goals are? Are there any books about this?

I know this is a late reply, but John Taylor Gatto has written books about the history of the government schools that you might find interesting.

It's tough to do this. It is possible. It is most desirable by creative children. The parents must be willing to endure their own paradigms.

At 6m30s... Holts critique "did not impact the institution of compulsory schooling...
It probably did but but was rejected since the purpose of state schooling is to train people to follow authority and obey...
American schooling is based on the Prussian model of citizens being subservient to the State....
A total contradiction to the spirit of the Constitution.
Education authorities got away with claiming the "right to remain silent" because of the people, Mainly the parenting class, was alredy rained to be subservient and trustful

The benefits and drawbacks weighed, of what a child / teen receives from our present institution? Why the conclusion that reform is not viable?

I’m finding it difficult to understand that first question, but as for the second my take is that it doesn’t seem possible at this point to make any sort of significant change to the education system as it stands. It appears that everybody involved from parents to teachers to state to government will not allow too big a change. They seem to be extremely set in the idea that the public education system as it stands is the best way to go and is extremely essential for our survival as humans, when in reality we have access to us much information and knowledge constantly that all we really need is for the system to get out of our way so we can truly grow and shine.
