I really appreciate how you are jumping on new things as soon as you can and break it all down for us! There are so many nooks and crannies on Ancestry that need pointing out. I'm super excited to see the fan chart when it is implemented on my side.
That’s getting more and more realistic for them to be able to add now because AI has just recently started hitting it off more. It would be great to just have a list you can go down. You can do it on an iPhone with photos now.
@@delbertconner5993 This would be an amazing feature given how easy Ancestry is making it to add (nilly willy) people from hints and other trees. This is why I still have FTM to sync to Ancestry. I do the dupe checking in FTM, fix and then sync back to Ancestry. But there should be a feature added to check for them online!
It would also be nice to have a feature in the Search function for your tree that allows you to search within your tree by city and state or county and state, or surname and state, etc. instead of just by name.
I would love that feature, too! To help me search family by birthplace - state or city - I create custom "MyTreeTags" for each relative and list their birth city. This helps me to at least find all my family in one area. You can then easily find all of your family that was born in a certain state, for example, by going to Find in your family tree and then using the "Filters" and then TreeTags. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the video, Connie. I just want to mention a couple of things. You mention at 6:37 that a new feature is “DNA Circles” but it’s just “Circles.” Ancestry retired “DNA Circles” a few years ago to roll out “ThruLines.” Also, Ancestry has streamlined the look of the Ethnicity Estimates and added more Communities ahead of the update. If you look at your results at 11:31 you see that your results have not been updated yet as they still show June 2022, which is visible. I mention it so that there isn’t confusion about the estimates. They are due out very soon, likely this month. Thank you again for the video!
Thanks for the comment. Regarding the DNA Circles, yes, they did retire DNA Circles a while back. That was my mistake in the rush to get that video out. I guess I was having flashbacks to the DNA Circles and not the new Circles. Good catch. I'm not sure using Circles was the best branding choice since it could be confused with DNA Circles. I agree with you on the Ethnicity updates. I may be wrong on my own estimates, I'll double check, but I had compared it to one of my previous videos and it was different.
@@GenealogyTV I completely agree. Using "Circles" was probably not a good branding idea and it doesn't really fit with what they're trying to convey here. The ethnicity portion has been keeping some people on edge for months waiting on an update. As a serious researcher, that part is just amusing but doesn't mean a lot to me. Reddit is in upheaval over the delay in the update, Ancestry's brand new change to move a couple of the DNA tools behind a paywall, and Ancestry's maneuver to block people from doing the 2023 "hack" to see changes in their estimates. Honestly, I just want them to release the update so that things will quiet down and get back to normal. Thanks again for your video! I don't have the new fan chart yet, but I'm excited to get it.
I was heavily dissapointed to see the DNA updates locked behind a recurring $60/yr membership. The cost to access ancestry and associated products os so very cost prohibitive.
FANtastic, love the fan charts! I love how you can see at a glance exactly who is missing for many generations and possible hints for them. For some reason, it makes more sense than the standard views. Such exciting updates, thank you SO much for keeping us updated. Awesome episode.😍
My fan chart has the beta leaf can’t be used and my fan only goes to 4, I have no fan settings section as yet, so disappointing! My leaf on side bar still reads hints. 😢I have signed out and rebooted.
I've been using ancestry for many years I use it in my phone and all I can tell you is that every time ancestry add something new or does an update my tree gets more and more screw up. Right now, I have so many duplicates not even funny, I am not able to download any documents or photos it has become more of a nightmare, especially when they started using storymaker
OMG I need to watch this again in slow motion about 5 more times: its sooooo loaded with new info for me that my brain is now muddled and I'll need to hear and see this multiple times. Wish me luck and thank you for you time and efforts.
Connie! How long have you been wanting this? Omg I literally screamed for joy! Also not everyone has gotten their ethnicity update. Mine is still saying July of 2022.
Thanks for that - one feature we need NOW - and they CAN do it. The sideways looking tech tells me which side a match is on, however if they have a decent tree i have no clue which side on their tree i match to. Currently we rely on messaging the person ands asking - more often they don't answer - or they could even be dead, But if you think about this, Ancestry can see how all matches interact with all other matches already - how wonderful if when we viewed a match's tree it lit up along the line of common ancestry. They could do this if there are enough shared matches with names in the trees. Also - i know I've mentioned before - i need more colours or symbols to attach to matches. Another really useful feature would be if when we get a new match it highlighted if it also matches any of your other DNA cousins you manage - currently its a case of spot the difference and trying to remember what new names you had when you go and check your cousins new matches - another easy software update.
The "Potential Ancestor" thing is driven by what other people have in their trees, which may lack solid evidence and be completely wrong. Personally, I wish I could turn that feature off. As for the Fan chart, that's great! Though, in my case, I'd appreciate if it could go out to 9+ generations. What would be neat is if Ancestry adjusted the available generations view setting based on how far out your tree stretches.
I agree completely with your comment on the Potential Ancestor suggestions. People ALWAYS need to take these hints and do their own research to verify or deny these suggestions. The additional problem may be that, for those who don’t have a paid subscription, they may joyfully click on these, if able, and add to the perpetual errors in Ancestry’s tree data.
@@Mistydazzle yes, those who don't have a paid subscription can click on the potential ancestor and without a paid subscription they can't see many sources. I recently got the paid subscription, not too long ago it wouldn't let me see the potential ancestor without accepting it first, so I"m not sure if that's a difference between paid and unpaid or just an improved feature. But I used to accept the suggestion, look at it and usually delete the person from my tree which was annoying.
You can turn this off! Just found it. Under Account Settings, On the left select "Tree". Then under Hint Notifications Yes or No on "Potential Relatives not yet in your tree". Connie - Thanks for a great channel.
@@robinphelps6991Great find! Though ... I wonder if that also affects the little "notifications" feature at the top. I know some folks pay attention to that. Ah well, at least for me, you solved an annoyance and if you were here I'd hug ya!
I love hearing about the new features on Ancestry. When you talked about the spam messages coming up in Ancestry, I didn't have that, but I had a person contact me and start talking to me like it was a singles site. I figured out pretty quick that he didn't want to talk genealogy, but I kept trying to redirect the conversation back to family search and he just wanted to aske questions about my personal life. I blocked him and I didn't appreciate this creep using the Ancestry platform to stalk for bed buddies.
I enjoyed your video on Ancestry Updates a lot and I admire your energy! There do seem to be differences in your and my Ancestry interface. I looked at the fan charts and I do not have the menu button "Fan Settings", so I'm stuck with the 4 generation fan. I also have a different and cumbersome pathway to the vertical fan options. So some of us are challenged a bit by these differences. You make it seem so easy!! Thanks for being so clear in your presentation and showing, on-screen, how you navigate. Very helpful. Dave, new subscriber!
Connie. Fabulous video! I can’t wait to explore some of the new roll-outs. It’s so great to have a video like this. Normally I’d only find these new features if I stumbled upon on them by chance. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I had been trying to create fan charts for my children, grands, and great-grands. I used to use Brothers Keeper and really loved the fan charts. I kept checking Ancestry and no fan charts. So I got tired of waiting and I tried hand-editing a PDF fan chart template and gave up as it was tedious and looked terrible. So I downloaded a new copy of Brothers Keeper and exported a GEDCOM from Ancestry and produced 12 fan charts. Then a week later, fan charts show up in Ancestry!
Something else new that I noticed is the DNA community record collections in the DNA story page. Great for those of us who have been assigned specific communities :) As always, thanks for the great video, can't wait for the roll out in AU.
I don't have most of the new features you discuss in this video (yet), but I did come across Circles in another place. Click the down arrow next to your name (upper right hand corner where you can sign out) and Circles is also there. I can't wait until the new features make it to me! I'm so excited about Fan View!
I have received some of the updates you mentioned . I still don't have the fan chart and 2023 ethnicity estimates. A feature I think would be helpful is an additional way to link an Ancestry member who is not a DNA cousin , but is a cousin or a close family member to a cousin. Currently a person can only link from the member profile page, a DNA cousin. I think it would be helpful, if you have a person who is a cousin and from their profile page show a link in your tree. I try to put my DNA cousins in my tree and also other people connected. For example a member, say a spouse of the cousin has a page, because they administer a various group of family members., some of whom are DNA cousins. It would be nice to click on a link on their page to show where they connect in your tree. Maybe Ancestry would have to come up with a different icon other than the DNA icon to show that you have link a person in your tree.
Thank you so much for posting this video. In the past, I subscribed to Ancestry but was unable to navigate through it very well. Wish I'd have found you before I canceled! Great job, A+++!
If you ever go back... as long as you didn't delete your tree... and you remember your username and password, you can continue your tree, even without a paid subscription. On the free account, you're limited by some records you can see. It should all still be there for you to pick up where you last left off.
The fan view and a couple of other new features you describe have not yet appeared in my tree, so I'll keep watching for them. For whatever reason, I'm usually one of the later users to see updates. And, yes, it appears the "Tree Hot Spot" relates to profiles in which I have been recently working. BTW, Family Tree Maker has completed its update work with Ancestry and the rollout for the 2019 FTM update is occurring now.
The new beta features haven’t appeared in my account yet either. I hope it’s just a phased rollout and that we’ll have those soon. Thank you for also sharing the news on the Family Tree Maker update-so happy to hear this!
Holy Smokes, my family tree project is the Kennedy's come to find out over the years we are all related, haha, so the fun part is putting the clan diversity together. So I subscribe and pay $50 a month for about 6 months then take a break, but I keep jumping back into my 1500 member tree and go another round. You probably know all about this, but this new FAN CHART will drive me back in for another round. We go back 15 generations so please push expansion of the chart for us deep family nuts. Thanks so much for the updates, keep it going for all of us, God Bless.
Awesome episode, as always! You are right about the "tree hot spot", it takes you to the part of the tree you've been working on most recently. I've been using it a lot. I have a bad habit of closing the window before I'm done 🤪and it's great to be able to jump back in so easily.
Interesting!😀 I do hope they finally provide a box for titles however I understand they don't use them in the U.S. but still it should be there for those of us that could definitely use that feature without messing up the name search. For instance, Ancestry sees adding titles in the front of names as a name therefore will not search for that person properly for hints. Also a Box for Sr. and Jr. would be great too. Also it would be SOO easy for them to add a feature to search for "DNA matches" when using a search for "Public trees". I know you can surname search in the DNA list of matches but being able to quickly scan the list of public trees for "specific names "and automatically see if they DNA match when searching for public trees is equally important. I know baby steps! Unfortunately both my sides of my family come from similar ethnic groups and sometimes even the same family lines and ancestors so some of this stuff won't be that helpful. Don't even get me started on "communities"! It is all lumped in together in a country where that ethnic group is not originally from then assumes it is that only that ethnic group. Meanwhile the country they are originally from not even that long ago show no communities so it is less than helpful. It is like saying ok you are from California then saying so you must be only Native American and this comes from there then cause you have 5% Native American ignoring the rest of the 95% of the DNA! Also I have genetic relatives of an ethnicity and they lumped me into their community even though I know we do not match through that connection at all so that is not my community I just have markers in common with people in that grouping from the other side of the family that are from there. LOL Also thru-lines is still showing the wrong info for ancestors for my ancestor because people were just copy pasting in my family and never fixed it. It isn't even the same last name lol nor do we DNA match anyone there. I still get alerts for it and life stories that don't fit Oy Vey Also being able to upload pics in messages would be nice so I don't have to save it to my page first before I send it to my dna matches in "messages". Of course the BIGGEST ask of them all would be to have an autocluster!!! "My kingdom for an autocluster!" and compare relations in common percentage in cms. All that said at least they are trying to listen to the public. I know they are trying to improve, that said hope they fix some of these no brainer additions etc.. Thanks so much for posting the additions and giving us a heads up.
Yes I am using that custom button I think, those are the special notes you can label? However sometimes I need a quick search for that ancestor who was a Captain, General Or Duke etc. and when I view it in the horizontal view it is easier to see oh there they are etc.. Otherwise I end up having to hunt them down. I have thousands on my tree so it is a bit of a struggle. I did find the Sr. and Jr. box finally :D however! I suppose if I only regulate the use of the labels for rank or titles it might work to cue me in "go look at that person" . However for searching docs etc. it is a bit tough. Sometimes their titles are in the docs I am searching for on ancestry and if I don't use them they get lost as many are nearly identical names. I guess until they come up with a box for ranks and titles I'll just keep putting them in and taking them out only when doing searches which is time consuming but oh well I guess. It is just a pet peeve of mine also the auto adding of the hubby's names to female spouses is not done in most of Europe only in Northern countries in Europe and their former colonies do they do this. So I often have to go back remove the hubby's name and try again..lol If they had an opt out button for auto adding the spouses names that would be awesome. Thanks again for the breaking news about tools I really appreciate it, it is like Christmas! :D @@GenealogyTV
Thanks yeah I understand but it won't appear in my family tree as the name is shortened or does not appear at all when viewing the tree? I need to see it in the tree when I am looking down the line to know where they are. For example when dealing with titles if the name was "The Prince of Wales" Right now I would have to put in "William Wales" or "The Prince Of Wales". The first would be incorrect and the last would be correct .Royal families do not have surnames really but titles. There is no box for a title/s and that is their name. It makes it difficult for searches, viewing and putting in the correct name. Conversely in other languages for example "Alfonso X, El Sabio Rey de Castiila" is correctly written "Rey de Castila" King of Castilla. If we had a prefix I could put in his title in there then in the other 2 boxes Alfonso X etc. Even people with lesser titles have this problem for instance "Lady Diana Spencer" her name is not "Diana Spencer" Her title is part of her name as seen even on their birth certificates. Conversely "Doña Mahalda de la Cerda" Means "Lady Mahalda de la Cerda".Ancestry however will search for that name as the name "Dona" or "Donna" and all the Donas or Donnas in the world show up instead of Mahalda de la Cerda. The titles are part of their name unlike Mr. or Mrs.. :/ @@thameslass5621
Interesting I still don't have the Fan view, but I'm ok with it for now, I saw that all colors in the DNA map has also changed (I prefer the dark mode, easier on my poor eyes). I can't wait until they update the data bases (mine still says Updated June 2022...) I'm also still looking forward being able to see how much DNA shared DNA relatives share between each other Edit: a lot of the options you're showing still don't show on my end.... I guess they're releasing these in small batches
I suspect it'll be something rolled out at some point in September - I don't have the option yet either. I think she's just demo-ing what it's going to look like and where to find it on the screen.
BTW, when I tried the fan chart last week it had an option regarding how many levels, I believe up to a maximum of 7. This week the fan chart only offers a fixed 5 levels. I questioned Ancestry about this and they advised they will get back to me.
Now the update has been rolled out to me too. I'm very happy with the fan chart - even if the feature "Fan settings" is still missing on my side of the pond.
Seems to be rolling out at different rates (I'm in the UK). I have the Fan view but no Beta or Fan settings. I'll look out for them. Thanks 🙂 My biggest bugbear with Ancestry is the limit and choice of colours for grouping DNA matches. I don't know why they can't provide a colour wheel so we can choose the number and colour we find best (like in DNAPainter Chromosome Map). I've got good eyesight but the Yellows/ Oranges and the two Light Blues are practically the same. I can't even tell the difference between the very dark ones. This seems such a basic thing to me. Any thoughts Connie? I have given feedback several times. 😔
I can see the Fan chart but cannot change the number of generations. Also see Circles but do not see the others that you mentioned. Excellent video, keep up the good work.
@@dorothydotson7154 There are several changes. The side view is now going to be part of a membership as will the separating paternal from maternal and several other things.
@@MusicInMotion_67 Thanks for the info. Looks like $29.99 a year to get them back. I made a one time DNA access purchase at MyHeritage for $29.99. I guess this is similar except for not being for just one year. I don't think people should have things taken away.
Awesome video as always, thanks for introducing these to us. I noticed at the bottom of my ethnicity estimates on the mobile app that it says “updated may 2023”. So i’m guessing that’s what you were referring to in the video that some people may see their updated results before others? And do anyones results ever stay the same even after an update or 99% of the time there is at least a smaller change being made?
My results varied a bit, but after reading ALL the info in each section I noted that the new Scottish % that has now appeared in my ethnic estimate was highly likely down to the Gaelic & Celtic origins of my 49% Brittany France & Channel island heritage. I’d therefore be shocked to find any actual Scottish ancestry.
One new "feature" rolled out for September: I see now that DNA matches can now only be grouped by parent by paid members. Non paying members have lost that capability. Fortunately, I had already created a custom grouping by my parents prior to Ancestry offering it. That is still available.
I didn't know you could do anything on Ancestry without a membership. I've paid for membership for years because I thought it was the only way to use ancestry.
@@ClauJos I have had an ACOM account since 2003 or so. My 2 week Free Trial is still available (I have never attempted to use it). I have always maintained a computerized database of my family genealogy since c.1992. I signed up for ACOM so that extended family could view and possibly contribute to what I was building since the ability to create/maintain a tree is free (so far). I create, on ACOM, my own source records, my own citations and augment them with images of records I have either scanned or acquired, for free, from other online resources (again, appropriately cited). I have never been a paid member because, being African American, I have never been convinced that ACOM could provide me any more information than I could already find in other, free (already paid for through taxes) resources often online or found at a public library (census data, county clerk records, state records, etc.). So far, I have not found evidence of my ancestors having records beyond 1860, with 2 exceptions (they were White), as they all have lived in the Southern United States. So, the ACOM records are of little value to me. No one, prior to 1870, immigrated through "normal" means, or seemed to have any sort of paper trail connected to marriages , births, deaths, education, property ownership, operation of businesses, or notable public service. ACOM has undertaken a significant buying spree over the last 10-12 years and is creating exclusive access to formerly free databases (e.g., newspapers/periodicals) one now has to pay for. Unfortunate.
For regular use of Ancestry you need a paid membership to look at records, other trees and contact members, though they they do have some free records. But if you did a DNA test you are able to message your DNA matches and see the first few generations of their tree if not private. Previously you could access the DNA tools as well. They have removed the access to some of those tools now which makes it less useful.
I liked that they added the comments icon/badge. I remember requesting that sort of thing one time when they did a survey, and then saw it pop up one day. I also like the MyHeritage-esque color coding for the fan. :) Also, my kits haven't had their ethnicities updated yet. The only thing I don't like, though, is that the paternal/maternal estimates/matches are behind a paywall (mostly interested in that for my dad's paternal matches, since his grandmother's side is a brick wall - At least I labeled those matches, though - also knowing that there are a few matches on both sides is helpful when using the Leed's method on MyHeritage). At least I still have a subscription on my dad's kit, so I know his maternal side is 60/40 Slavic/Baltic, and his paternal is more like 85/15 Slavic/Baltic, with his matches either having 90+ Slavic (and no Baltic), or 80-85 Slavic/10-15 Baltic/0-5% German, Jewish or Balkans. Maybe half of my dad's 112 paternal matches (an improvement from 46 last year...) seem to be Ukrainian/Russian and German surnames (but no German DNA). Speaking of which, that's my wish for Ancestry - to include populations like Kashubians, Sorbs, Silesians, Carpatho-Rusyns (rather than just communities), even a bunch of regions in Russia, like Novgorod, Kazan, Volga-Germans, Northern Caucuses, and so on (the later 4, I've founded triangulated clusters for on MyHeritage). EDIT: Looks like Germany's one of the improved regions with Volga and Don Germans!
I'm new to ancestry. I just got it this month so all this is new to me. I did see the fan view and like you thought it's amazing. However it only showed 3 generations. Thank you for showing that I can expand it.

If you already have a membership that's going to expire let's say in December, can you take advantage of the sale and add on to your current membership? Thank you.
I wanted to let you know that I have been receiving those same messages that very likely are spam! Same as yours they only say 1 or 2 words! Hello, etc! I have tried to find a source but have been unsuccessful! I have blocked these individuals and their future messages are hidden! I too have not gotten spam before!
@@BeckyInCa No. It's too bad but it doesn't work that way but, there is a solution. The next sale coming up will be Black Friday which runs through at least Cyber Monday and maybe a few days more. So, depending on what date in December your subscription expires (the earlier the better), you can take advantage of one of those sales. In the past (no guarantee for this year) I remember one of those sales running all the way until the 12th so read the fine print carefully if your date is later in the month, like the 25th. For now, figure that they'll expire the 3rd or 4th which likely is before your subscription expires or needs to be cancelled (depends whether you have a subscription or a gift membership). To take advantage of the sale (the last 50% off for the year though there *may* (risky though) be sales with 30% -40% off closer to Xmas), you will need to cancel your subscription early, so you may lose up to a month of your current subscription, again, depending on the date. You just need to call Support and say you want an *immediate* (same day basically) cancellation. With that cancellation you can then sign up before the 50% sale expires. If you don't want to lose that "month", the next sale is usually in February, around Valentines. Since that won't come until after your current one expires, you can do other work during those two months and still add to your tree during that time. Once expired you won't have access to most records or the records attached to your tree but the records in your tree(s) will become accessible again when you renew, or you can have access during those two months by paying $5 a month (new Tree Preservation service). Hopefully something in there might help.
I think the new design features and gadgets are great, and your explanation is terrific; but until Ancestry fixes some of the major problems with the basic Search, Hints, and Suggested Records functions, these added bells and whistles will not be very helpful. For example, having everyone from every century come up in Search even though you’ve put a specific date in. If I put in 1920, I expect to see only records come up for at most the early 1900s, NOT the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s with that name. It is ridiculous! Also, when I go to a record, I expect to see in Suggested Records records for the person who I am looking at in the record on that page, NOT records for their brother or somebody with a completely different name, AND I expect to see records for the correct century. It is beyond frustrating how many wrong records come up in Search, Hints, and Suggested Records - wrong person, wrong century etc. This has been like this for at least a DECADE or more now, and during that time I have written to them multiple times telling them about it but nothing has ever been done. I finally just gave up, which I’m sure is what they were hoping would happen. All that these new bells and whistles do is disguise and detract from some major issues Ancestry has with the most important features on their site - the record research functions/algorithms. Then, of course there are the glaring mistakes and poor transcriptions in the record indexing - especially of the Wills … listing the Will Date as the Probate Date and estimated Death Year. The probate date/info is almost always found below the will. Why have their indexers not figured this out yet? There are thousands of wrong Probate Dates and Estimated Death Years Listed on their Will Record Indexes. Another issue is that code shows up in sent messages in the messaging system wherever you type quotation marks or parentheses in a message. This has been a recurring problem. Another thing: I wish they’d change the Facts feature on the profile pages so that when you enter multiple Custom Facts with the same year they are listed in Facts in 1,2,3 order NOT 3,2,1 order. In other words, the order in which they were entered, NOT in reverse order.
Update: I still have the fan chart but the menu on the upper right where the options for the chart was has disappeared. Still no sign of the chart on my sister's account.@@GenealogyTV
Hi! When is the September 2023 Ethnicity update coming? I know this seems like an obvious answer in the question, but usually usare are in the beginning of the month. Thank you!
Just saw this video, I somehow missed it when it first came out. Most of the things you show here I am just now beginning to get in my Ancestry. For example, just this afternoon, not this morning, (4Oct2023) I finally got the Fan Chart view for the tree.
Hey Connie, my first comment on any of your videos, just started watching you and wanted to say hello, and thank you for all the information you provide. Have a lot of catching up to do but enjoying your videos very much!
I've been enjoying and learning a lot from your video's, thank you for your time. There is a search feature I wish ancestry on my lap top PC had, that is to search by ancestors location on my tree. I looked up a bit about this, as far as I know the Ancestry appt on my cell has this , by clicking on map. I've checked this out a bit. Would be great to be able to search location on pc lap top the same way I can with people in my tree. Also I have been getting over the last few weeks the Hello & Hello how are you doing ? messages. I think it was through story feature. I just ignored them, however over the last week or so they have stopped.
I have not found the fan chart. I assumed it was under the Trees link. Just Vertical and Horizontal here. Maybe I missed something. I am a subscriber to Ancestry.
I never thought much about the fan but after listening to you saying how fantastic it is I look at this through this world. Its great! I have gotten spam, fortunately so far only one. I searched my many matches looking for that name so I didn't miss anything and he was not there. Thank you so much for teaching me all of this, I became a member of the academy also. You are fantastic.
@GenealogyTV I love this and am learning so much here. You are a fantastic teacher and although I have been researching for close to 30 years, I am researching so much better now. Have a keener eye and a much happier me. I didn't go back and redo things just started keeping notes and writing things down to do better. I am sure what is there in my tree is good and well-researched. The only time I take from other trees is when I'm building trees for my children and then only from my researched tree. Thank you for caring enough to teach us.
Hi Connie. I discovered the fan view Thursday and knew you would be excited about it! I love messing with it. Also, I saw video in the gallery under "filter" but didn't know what to do with it. :) Thank you for your videos. You have taught me a lot. I am going back through my tree trying to get organized and implement some of your spreadsheets.
Looking forward to the fan view - currently not showing on PC version, but does show on mobile. 7 days later, ETA: fan chart now there, but no options to display other than 5 generations; hopefully still to come.
Loved this video - interesting that Ancestry has pulled back Fan options for some members. I had them one day, and didn't the next - all part of the Beta experience :)
Thanks for the video! I raced to my computer to check but I haven't received any of the updates yet - hopefully soon. On another note, I would love for you to make a video for some inspiration on how to use the Albums feature in the overall media gallery, and on each ancestor profile's gallery. Albums for document types, photo subjects, decades and years maybe?
I just found your channel and was so impressed with the new information. I just opened the new fan view, but on the top right I don't have the fan settings to change the amount of generations that can be viewed. Can you give me some guidance on why or how to fix it. Thank you. I will have to go back to that video and take notes.
As a long time ancestry member, I was taking this year off for other things, planning to re up in January of 24. Seeing the wonderful fan chart in your video, I signed back up yesterday, and am disappointed that fan view option is not showing! How can I get the fan chart?
Thanks for the great video! Love seeing the updates. It would be great if Ancestry would let us see if we are connected to our matches' maternal or paternal side. It would help narrow down the search when trying to find the link.
@sharontabor7718 Thanks Sharon. I can see if my matches are on my maternal or paternal side, but I don't think I can see if I am a match on their maternal or paternal side.
Interesting changes for trees and tracking. I guess it's only for American users, the fan tree and DNA sale doesn't seem to be available anywhere else. I can see some of the features on my page but not others. Thanks for bringing them to everyone's attention!
I am in Czech Republic and my aunt's account has all these new features. This account is not used at all (DNA results are shared to my account) and all other accounts don't have it.
Thank you - this was all so helpful to me. One question, and if I missed the answer in your video please forgive me. My new Fan Chart will only go out 4 generations and I do not have the button on the top of the page that allows you to choose the number of generations shown, as you mentioned. My top tab/button choices are only Find, Invite, and Activity...no "Fan Settings" at all. Thanks!
I cannot wait to try the fan view, I think that is going to be very useful, as well as fun! Something that is driving me crazy is the new reviews option under hints. It’s great, but when I find children that way and then decide to add them using that left-hand panel that comes up, it only adds the children to the person featured, not the husband and wife. This creates a mess in my tree, and it takes ages to go through each one, edit, family, relationships and try to get them under both parents. Why in the world don’t they just have an option that you can click that shows that the children belong to both of them? If there is such a button, please let me know!
Thank you for the info. Later today I'll be playing with these new updates. One of the first things I learned was to not take the DNA estimates as rock-solid. One thing I'd like to see is a way to indicate an ancestor being on the maternal or paternal side, such as "3rd GGF - Maternal Side". It would be handy when you are deep into your tree, and you can't remember what side you are working on, or is that just me?
@@GenealogyTV It's when I print out someone's profile that is interesting and show it to my mother, then she asks if it was from her side of the family, I have to go back and check to make sure. LOL
I love ancestry but it has tones of glitches. Especially under the filters searches. It has a wonderful vertical view where you can see more than your direct parental lines.
Loved your video. I've just recently found your channel and I've discovered I need to watch more of your videos. I've been working on my tree for a year now. I've only used the mobile app. I never realized how much I'm missing buy not using a computer. I'm excited now to use a laptop. Thank you!
My pleasure. My advice for any beginner is to get organized and stay organized as you research... right from the start. This is what I teach at the GTV Academy. Enjoy the journey.
Connie: great vídeo! I have a great great x7 very famous historical figuer as an uncle and keep getting clogged with hints just for him. My question is: is my only option to delete him for them to stop or is there a way to stop hints for a particular person? Thanks.
No, there’s not a way to stop ants from a specific person. Personally, I would not remove anyone from my tree because the hints were annoying. I would just skip over them.
My mom and I just got our updated estimates this last week. I know which side is my mother's because of the Wales, but it also has Scottish ancestry, I have gone back as far as the 1700s for the Welsh and English branches and have not found any Scottish. Her maternal grandfather's parents who were from Quebec, Canada and France, respectively; but haven't been able to crack that brick Wall yet. My Scottish ancestry comes from my paternal grandmother who was born in the Glasgow area. She is Scottish except for her paternal grandfather who immigrated to Scotland from Ireland. It looks like it was during the Irish potato famine. My paternal grandfather was born in England.
I’ve received many spam messages through ancestry. It just started about 3 months ago. They have been directly through the message center not stories. The fan chart is amazing!
At 1:16 on the fan settings I’m not showing “fan settings”? I have only these 3 activity, invite, find. I am not currently subscribed to ancestry and maybe that’s why?
FYI I don't have the "fan settings" option, so my fan only has 4 generations, which is not very helpful. I hope since it's beta that will be coming soon. I also do not have a way to send them comments on it. Guess they don't want my opinion 😢. Could someone who has that ability please send them a thank you and make sure they know the settings option is extremely desirable? Thank you Connie for the work you do.
Oh Connie I loved this informative video. Thank you so much. I have the fan view, which is so awesome. It is like Family Searches. I am waiting for the Beta leaf. I have 6 icons on the menu with the fan view, and I noticed you have nine. I am hoping I will eventually get those. Also on the home page, I don't have the option yet for my Ancestry Feed. Thanks again for your support and sharing your knowledge.
I really appreciate how you are jumping on new things as soon as you can and break it all down for us! There are so many nooks and crannies on Ancestry that need pointing out. I'm super excited to see the fan chart when it is implemented on my side.
Thanks Cathy... and thanks for supporting the channel.
@@GenealogyTVYou may know this already but there's a September 2023 update for Ancestrydna.
I'd still like to see a feature where Ancestry checks trees for duplicates, date errors etc. Like MyHeritage does
That’s getting more and more realistic for them to be able to add now because AI has just recently started hitting it off more. It would be great to just have a list you can go down. You can do it on an iPhone with photos now.
There used to be a "duplicate" feature you can merge duplicates information.
There still is but you need to know it is duplicate. With My Heritage they alert you to all your duplicates and potential errors.@@jamieaasen7285
@@jamieaasen7285There still is the merge feature, but there's no way to search for duplicate.
I appreciate how clearly you communicate. No "umms". Your voice is consistent across the video. What a pleasure to view and listen.
Lol. I edit out all of the ums. I wish I could break the habit.
LOL. You still do a great job.
@@GenealogyTV
It would also be nice to have a feature in the Search function for your tree that allows you to search within your tree by city and state or county and state, or surname and state, etc. instead of just by name.
I wish they had left the search like it was on heritage quest
Agreed. I have Family Tree Maker on my PC, and that has the location option. It syncs with the online Ancestry tree.
YES! This would be so incredibly useful!
Thanks for the video, Connie. I just want to mention a couple of things. You mention at 6:37 that a new feature is “DNA Circles” but it’s just “Circles.” Ancestry retired “DNA Circles” a few years ago to roll out “ThruLines.”
Also, Ancestry has streamlined the look of the Ethnicity Estimates and added more Communities ahead of the update.
@@BAJPGeneticGenealogist just wait till folks are awaiting the "Pet Updates"!!!
I was heavily dissapointed to see the DNA updates locked behind a recurring $60/yr membership. The cost to access ancestry and associated products os so very cost prohibitive.
I always wait for a 50 percent sale. Yes you can't access the communities either unless you pay for a subscription.
FANtastic, love the fan charts! I love how you can see at a glance exactly who is missing for many generations and possible hints for them. For some reason, it makes more sense than the standard views. Such exciting updates, thank you SO much for keeping us updated. Awesome episode.😍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Is the fan chart only available in USA? Not showing on UK site as an option.
Do you think they will go past 7 generations? I’m 20 on my tree and still finding more
My fan chart has the beta leaf can’t be used and my fan only goes to 4, I have no fan settings section as yet, so disappointing!
Thanks
Man, that last feature with the fan view is gunna make a big difference. That may be my favorite new feature. Thank you for this video!!
Connie! How long have you been wanting this? Omg I literally screamed for joy! Also not everyone has gotten their ethnicity update. Mine is still saying July of 2022.
I didn’t realize I could scroll down to see when it was last updated, your comment helped me figure that out! Thanks a bunch!
Where do u find the date updated?
Mine as well. Hopefully will see the update soon!
Mine still says July 2022, but is brand new.....?
@@tknows470Glad I could help!!!
This is the most useful Ancestry video I have ever seen.. Straight and to the point.. Much appreciated.
Thank you
Thanks for that - one feature we need NOW - and they CAN do it.
My fan chart view no longer has the setting for number of generations. Not sure why.
I had the fan chart view on my mobile app. So happy they finally added it to the dashboard for desktops! 💯
Same here!
Thanks Dave... the new subscriber. Yeah... I just lost the ability to expand to 7 generations, so they are clearly still working on it.
my interface is different too, missing some of the options shown :-(
Connie. Fabulous video! I can’t wait to explore some of the new roll-outs. It’s so great to have a video like this. Normally I’d only find these new features if I stumbled upon on them by chance. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for supporting the channel Richard.
Wow you were ahead of your time.
Something else new that I noticed is the DNA community record collections in the DNA story page. Great for those of us who have been assigned specific communities :)
As always, thanks for the great video, can't wait for the roll out in AU.
I don't have most of the new features you discuss in this video (yet), but I did come across Circles in another place. Click the down arrow next to your name (upper right hand corner where you can sign out) and Circles is also there.
I can't wait until the new features make it to me! I'm so excited about Fan View!
Good to know. I hadn't noticed that.
I don't have the new Ethnicity Estimate either.
I just saw today on my Ancestry account that new updates to the DNA results will be arriving the coming weeks.@@DonaldCooleySVD
Thanks for the update on family tree maker Bill.
Thank you
Awesome episode, as always! You are right about the "tree hot spot", it takes you to the part of the tree you've been working on most recently. I've been using it a lot. I have a bad habit of closing the window before I'm done 🤪and it's great to be able to jump back in so easily.
Good to know!
Thank you, Connie, for doing this video and sharing what's new on Ancestry. So many new features to look into, very exciting.
You are so welcome! Thanks for supporting the channel.
Use the suffix field for Sr. and Jr. You can also add a custom field under the add button on a profile.
You can put any titles (or anything you like) in the suffix field and it will appear in searches

I still don't have the Fan view, but I'm ok with it for now, I saw that all colors in the DNA map has also changed (I prefer the dark mode, easier on my poor eyes). I can't wait until they update the data bases (mine still says Updated June 2022...) I'm also still looking forward being able to see how much DNA shared DNA relatives share between each other
Edit: a lot of the options you're showing still don't show on my end.... I guess they're releasing these in small batches
Same here. No fan chart.

Same here - no fan or Beta options.
I suspect it'll be something rolled out at some point in September - I don't have the option yet either. I think she's just demo-ing what it's going to look like and where to find it on the screen.
I don't have the fan chart either.
BTW, when I tried the fan chart last week it had an option regarding how many levels, I believe up to a maximum of 7. This week the fan chart only offers a fixed 5 levels. I questioned Ancestry about this and they advised they will get back to me.
They are clearly working on it. I lost it too.
I love these updates...thank you Connie...

I have just joined Ancestry and your video gets me excited to learn more from your older videos…thanks
Wonderful! Stick around. I talk a lot about Ancestry because it is my fav.
I have just sent away for my DNA test from them, then I’ll really need your videos to understand that color chart🤯
I did get a spam “hello” I blocked him, twice.
Thanks somuch for this update. The next step I would like is a print of the fan chart.
One new "feature" rolled out for September: I see now that DNA matches can now only be grouped by parent by paid members. Non paying members have lost that capability. Fortunately, I had already created a custom grouping by my parents prior to Ancestry offering it. That is still available.
I am disappointed they have made these features for just paid members. There goes My Ancestry benefits
Excellent video, Connie. I’m going to watch it again; there was so much in it. I’m excited about the fan tree also.
I'm surprised your fan chart has so many unidentified ancestors. It makes me feel better about my own research and lack of results in some areas lol.
I’m every methodical and detailed in my research, so I’m not in a rush.
@@GenealogyTV I absolutely get that, but I also know how how well you know your stuff.
As more people get tested around the world I believe they will be able to refine those regions. They need an updated to go on.
it's a roll out . Not everyone will have it . I don't have that Beta. I have the hints Beta.
Yeah, I don’t have it yet..😇
Thanks, I don't have it either :(
I don’t either, bummer.
Yeps, I have it but without the "fan settings." Weird.
Yes i have the fan view but no fan settings..weird
I'm new to ancestry. I just got it this month so all this is new to me. I did see the fan view and like you thought it's amazing. However it only showed 3 generations. Thank you for showing that I can expand it.
They have since removed the generations button. I think they’re working on it on the backend. Welcome to the world of genealogy. You're in the right place.
I think so but I’m not sure.
Thanks. I’ll let Ancestry know.
I paused the video at the two minute mark and hopped onto Ancestry to explore. WOW! I love the fan chart and so does my husband.
Yay. We're trying to figure out where people are getting it. Many have not gotten it yet.
I'm in Arizona (got it) and my sister is in New York (has not gotten it).@@GenealogyTV
Update: I still have the fan chart but the menu on the upper right where the options for the chart was has disappeared. Still no sign of the chart on my sister's account.@@GenealogyTV
Thanks for giving the update features.
Hi! When is the September 2023 Ethnicity update coming? I know this seems like an obvious answer in the question, but usually usare are in the beginning of the month. Thank you!
Well, they seem to be stalling for some reason. I don’t work for Ancestry, so I’m not exactly sure. Typically updates come in September.
Thank you so much!
Always valuable information and insights. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Oh thank you. Welcome to the Academy and thanks for supporting the channel.
Thanks for the updates. Waiting patiently on the edge of my seat to get the fan chart. I do not have it yet.
The fan option finally hit my account. Thanks for all of the insight.
Not on mine yet but I can not wait to see it ,,,so excited!!!!
I didn’t know a lot of these options! Thanks for this overview!!!
Happy to help!
Excellent updates! I’ve wanted a fan chart in forever. Family Tree Maker had it years and years ago.
Thank you for explaining new features. One thing I don't have is the fan settings.
Mine disappeared since I recorded the video. I’m sure it will come back.
Thank you for getting this out so quickly!!! I'm not seeing all of these, yet. Hopefully soon.
They roll out in stages.
Thanks Connie. Where are you? We're trying to track the roll out. Just state and country please.
@@GenealogyTV I’m in Kentucky, USA.
Looking forward to the fan view - currently not showing on PC version, but does show on mobile. 7 days later, ETA: fan chart now there, but no options to display other than 5 generations; hopefully still to come.
I love these new features! Thank you Connie, for your videos! They are so helpful!
You are so welcome!
Loved this video - interesting that Ancestry has pulled back Fan options for some members. I had them one day, and didn't the next - all part of the Beta experience :)
Interesting!
Interesting idea.
I just found your channel and was so impressed with the new information. I just opened the new fan view, but on the top right I don't have the fan settings to change the amount of generations that can be viewed. Can you give me some guidance on why or how to fix it. Thank you. I will have to go back to that video and take notes.
Welcome to GTV. Hang in there... they have since removed the fan chart view settings feature. I’m sure it will be back soon.
Thank you for such a quick response! I will try to be patient. Lol 😂
As a long time ancestry member, I was taking this year off for other things, planning to re up in January of 24. Seeing the wonderful fan chart in your video, I signed back up yesterday, and am disappointed that fan view option is not showing! How can I get the fan chart?
Not everyone has it yet. Hang in there. They’re rolling it out in stages.
Thanks for the great video! Love seeing the updates.
It would be great if Ancestry would let us see if we are connected to our matches' maternal or paternal side. It would help narrow down the search when trying to find the link.
They already offer that in the side view and the paternal / maternal lists.
@sharontabor7718 Thanks Sharon. I can see if my matches are on my maternal or paternal side, but I don't think I can see if I am a match on their maternal or paternal side.
You can in the DNA Cousin Match area, click on the By Parent tab.
@GenealogyTV That's brilliant, thanks Connie. It will be a great help!
Great video - fyi I'm getting the ethnicity update pop-up saying that they have been, but no changes yet.
Interesting. Thanks.
Fabulous video of updates! Thanks, Connie.
You are so welcome!
Thanks!
Yeah, I lost my button after I recorded this episode. Stay tuned it’s coming I’m sure.
The fan option is great, but I don't seem to have fan settings, would you know where else it could be, thank you
I cannot wait to try the fan view, I think that is going to be very useful, as well as fun!
I received the fan chart Thursday, July 7th. I am in Idaho, USA
Yay
Thank you for the info. Later today I'll be playing with these new updates. One of the first things I learned was to not take the DNA estimates as rock-solid. One thing I'd like to see is a way to indicate an ancestor being on the maternal or paternal side, such as "3rd GGF - Maternal Side". It would be handy when you are deep into your tree, and you can't remember what side you are working on, or is that just me?
Are use tree tags and mark my ancestors as “left off here.” That way I can filter to that tag and see where I left off last.
@@GenealogyTV It's when I print out someone's profile that is interesting and show it to my mother, then she asks if it was from her side of the family, I have to go back and check to make sure. LOL
Awesome video! Does Ancestry have haplogroup information?
No
I do not have the fan chart..
And a few other features you are showing. 😢. I hope it comes soon!
Very excited to see the fan charts!!!
I don't have the fan option as yet. Possibly they are rolling this out? I'm happy to hear about the new updates! Thank you.
Eeeeee! I’m so excited to play with all of these new features! Thanks for sharing the how to!
Have fun!
I love ancestry but it has tones of glitches. Especially under the filters searches. It has a wonderful vertical view where you can see more than your direct parental lines.
Thank you Connie for explaining all theses new features!
Disappointed that I don't have any of the updates yet, but it gives me something to look forward to. :)
@@GenealogyTVthank you. It just clogs up my hints and buries my other family members.
Nice video. Your Simmons line short, too ? Mine are from Burke and Wilkes county,North Carolina
Sounds like you’re having fun with your research. Hey thanks for supporting the channel.
I’ve received many spam messages through ancestry. It just started about 3 months ago. They have been directly through the message center not stories. The fan chart is amazing!
Thanks for sharing!
Fan chart finally showed up and I LOVE it. Added COUNTLESS ancestors it would have taken WEEKS just to find. Thanks for the heads up!
Glad you enjoyed it!
At 1:16 on the fan settings I’m not showing “fan settings”? I have only these 3 activity, invite, find. I am not currently subscribed to ancestry and maybe that’s why?
They have removed it temporarily
@@GenealogyTV ok thanks. I’ll check back soon to swift I have it👍
FYI I don't have the "fan settings" option, so my fan only has 4 generations, which is not very helpful. I hope since it's beta that will be coming soon. I also do not have a way to send them comments on it. Guess they don't want my opinion 😢. Could someone who has that ability please send them a thank you and make sure they know the settings option is extremely desirable? Thank you Connie for the work you do.
I don't have it either.
No fan view in the UK yet, but thanks for the heads up on the ThruLines and Possible DNA matches in the tree viewing options 😊
Thank you Jean.
Thank you for explaining the new updates!
No problem!
