I wonder what would your parents/relatives/strangers think/say if they saw you crawling like that around the room with a gopro strapped to your head while talking to yourself :D
Alternatively, you could pick a test tone to download or play on youtube (although compression might make that less viable) to give you that constant hum of bass you seek when sub crawling.
Paul Helsel My RSL Speedwoofer is super boomy right at 50 Hz. Looks like I may need to play a 50 Hz test tone while doing the sub crawl to see where it’s more flat sounding across the frequencies.
@@abielpangga6314 It absolutely was where I was placing it. I did the sub crawl & took care of the problem. I couldn’t believe this method until I tried it. Amazing! My sweet spots are on either left or right side of the room near the wall. I’m looking to purchase a second one soon 👍
That was a good line. "If you know good bass, this is an easy test". I am quite new to this and have not heard much. Any pointers of how I could find the right spot? Also, have you tried using one of those Bluetooth transmitters to make a Sub Woofer wireless? Any DIY possible on that?
+Shobhit Mathur There are a handful of wireless sub solutions but nothing DIY I can think of. The right spot you will know when you hear it doing the crawl.
Okay I tried moving it around and weirdly it sounds much tighter when placed right in front of the TV equidistant from both the front speakers. This is almost in the center from the front wall. Also, flicking the Phase switch to 180 from 0 made a huge difference. It made the sub sound nice and deep. Have left it at that for now. Audyssey never picked on it as being out of phase when the switch was set to 0 in the same location. Could you explain whats happening here, only if you have the time. Thank You again for all the great videos.
this is the best way i can describe it.. only 3 years too late. If you play a song that has sustained bass notes e.g. longer than a drum kick, you want to be able to hear the sustained low frequency. When you do the crawl or walk around a room and notice the bass output decrease, that "sustained note" sounds like a drum kick and it's not fulfilling the bass extension and therefore sounds muddy. it's like the bass wants to be there but you can't hear it. For example: if the bass note in the song is "bassssssssssssssssssss bassssssssssssssssssssss but you hear bass bass, then you are missing that full low frequency range. Hope this helps. For low bass try walking away from the source a good distance and you will definitely notice a change in sound resulting in nice sounding bass.
Should it matter what direction the port faces? For my 10" CV sub, it has a 4" port on the rear of the box, and the driver faces the other direction. So, when I set up to do the crawl in my computer room, should I face the driver where my head would be facing or the port that way?
Room corners don't act as a horn that amplifies the sound. The sound waves build up more in corners because there are more surfaces for the sound to bounce off and collide with other waves and are added together. You won't hear the same amplitude standing in the middle of the room as you would if you were in a corner.
Corners are 1/8th space a +3db gain over against a wall 1/4th space which is +3db over an open area half space. Look it up. Room modes are another thing, then there is also room gain.
Thanks for this educational- Actually, it was a fun video, Zeos. So this must be what it's like when your cat listens to your stereo. And sheesh, that's a huge subwoofer! I got so sick of doing the subwoofer crawl. So now I do the subwoofer walk instead. That's right, my subwoofer is five and a half feet off of the ground. I just stack it on top of the speakers I don't use.
+Z Reviews --- The BASS in modern music goes down as far as 30Hz, the 'wavelength' of 30Hz is 37.5 feet (divide that by 'Pi', 3.14) -- that's a 'bubble' or sphere of 12 foot in DIAMETER;; so if the longest dimension of your listening room is less than 12 foot, then you are not going to be able (no matter how expensive your 'subwoofer' is) to 'hear' 30Hz in that room --- on the other hand, if you left the door to that room open and went out into the hallway, or up the stairs, or some other part of the house, THEN you would hear that LOW bass ---- and so would your neighbours.....in the next street!
Zeos I like this video. I'm moving into a new apartment soon and I will definitely do this with my sub. This seems to be more of an art than a science without measuring equipment. Do tweeters and midrange. Couple years late I know but maybe revisiting your basics would be good??? It'd be good for me now.
is there really such thing as too boomy though? i live in the country so i don't have to care about waking up neighbors or anything so having my sub in an spot that sort of amplifies it wouldn't be a bad thing right? i've got the bic formula 12 for reference.
Subwoofer crawl, interesting! A hifi-nerd friend told me that a subwoofer placed up in the ceiling works very good AND you free your floor space. So put your head high up against the ceiling. Maybe that’s the place to put that sub? Regards from Sweden.
how do you know the difference between “clean” bass and “boomy” bass? i’ve always done the crawl and picked the spot which sounds the deepest but it sounds to me like that is considered “boomy.” i also have a SVS SB12NSD which is sealed and an Emotiva Basx S8 which is ported so it’s really hard to find the “sweet” spot when one plays a little deeper then the other

@surfitlive Nah you're looking for the smoothest frequency response accross low end frequencies. You want to find a spot where you feel the subbass and the punch in balance with each other.
Yep, with all that crawling he did in his apartment, he never heard it. His neighbor heard it and called the cops. Chapter 2: He will be doing another sub crawl in jail. He won't hear it, but the guy 2 cells down will hear it. That guy will get mad and make the subcrawler his girlfriend in the shower.
Just did it in my room. I've combined my bedroom with my mini homecinema, unfortunately i can't do anything about which room i can have my homecinema in. Just did the subcrawl, but unfortunately i can't get a reasonable place to put the sub to get best possible sound for the listeningposition. I've got a pretty small bedroom so not many possibilities. where i've got my screen i've also got my computer and desk, it sounds great there, so its nice when im listening to music, but its not optimal for movies.
trexx32 Not really. You would just put the two subs in the best two spots you find. However if you get two you can usually get a better result regardless of the placement.
The distance settings are usually for delay and when the sub is the only thing playing it won't really matter. Gain I leave at 0 and I set the cutoff around 50hz.
Kinda curious as to why you put that little subwoofer facing the corner, mine is about that size and a downward facing one too but it's not a good place to put it at all. Otherwise the neighbors would get angry at boomy bass
LAST NIGHT That little sub is a Final Audio 8" and it really doesn't have enough output for the room unless you corner load it. I am not a huge fan of it.
Hello again Z! I'm going for the 2.2 setup, with JBL 530s with 2x JBL 250P subs. Is it a problem if I use a stereo amplifier that doesn't have digital bass management( CXA80)? Will the sub woofer crawl be enough for good results? How much more a difference does an amplifier with bass management and microphone measurements make? Hope to hear your advice! best regards
To paint you a general picture, the room is around 20 sqm with uneven sized wall heights with a perforated metal stair case in the corner of the same wall i would install my speakers..atypical to say the least.
The sound system is more for music listening then home cinema. I just don't know if its silly to install dual subs with out bass management and if i should just change my current amp for a one with bass management capabilities. Is the investment for bass management worth it? Whats your advice?
fuck this fucking youtube shit i waited so long for the last part of the projection screen build and now its not available in my fucking country because is apperantly has some sort of licensed movie or film in it. I know im asking much but could you please upload that video to another platform so viewers from germany can watch it? other than that this video video here is great as always keep up the good work.
RallyemiXXedup There was like 15 seconds of a deadmau5 song in it and a few clips of some movies. I didn't think they could detect that shit that fast.
Z Reviews either way thanks to the hint to use vpn i was able to see it! (That projector screen is gorgeous btw and i think some Daft punk was playing too during the building process and they are fast with blocking they detect that stuff automatically while processing the clip)
it doesn't matter where the subwoofer is placed in the room if you set you subwoofer to the same loudness as the midrange that will remove the sweet spots
I wonder what would your parents/relatives/strangers think/say if they saw you crawling like that around the room with a gopro strapped to your head while talking to yourself :D
+altec.gs They would sing "Dream On" by Aerosmith
Nah, i think "White Rabbit" by J.A. is a safer bet. xD
Daft Punk - Doing it Right
Such beautiful clean bass in that track. Definitely would recommend this track for this test.
Why am I up at 11:33 pm watching Z crawl on the floor... again...
its hard to go back to headphones after listening to proper 2.1
What speakers do you have?
Preston Granger Diy 8 inch speaker and a 10 inch sub also got a monitor audio 4 inch speaker for close range use
So true, even with 2.1 it feels like it's 5.1. But without the subwoofer, I'd say headohones
It's hard to go back to 2.1 after hearing proper 4.1
hahah love that you, hate people making noise outside.. with your speakers and woofers hahaha..

Okay, let me try it out. Right now my 8" sub placed in a corner gives everyone a headache. Just cant find a way to tighten up the bass.

that sub! haha looks like it can fart on a table and break it in half
So small subwoofer you want to place it where it sounds boomy in the corner to amplify what it doesn’t have?

No, boomy bass sounds like shit
This was very informative, for real. It was also very entertaining. Best video on youtube.

What does this have to do with the video? The crawl is just about putting the sub in a spot where the bass frequencies spread evenly.
@surfitlive Nah you're looking for the smoothest frequency response accross low end frequencies. You want to find a spot where you feel the subbass and the punch in balance with each other.
My room is 10x12 and I can hear 30hz just fine all the way down to 20hz then after that I feel it so not sure your theory is any good.

just slow or speed up the music a c hair and youtoob won't bust you for it

it doesn't matter where the subwoofer is placed in the room if you set you subwoofer to the same loudness as the midrange that will remove the sweet spots
no? www.google.com/search?q=subwoofer+placement&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
I never hear a subwoofer with good sound before until today
you have to set the subwoofer up right to get the good sound from the subwoofer
Oh so wrong. The placement, among many other factors, is crucial.
Your apt gave me anxiety.
maybe a bigger place dude ,,probably sound much better
I would love to be your neighbour, but really!
use 7 nation army
