Something sounds fishy with this retelling (not your fault at all). How would 15 Germans be mowed down while having breakfast, halfway through a battle? As soon as the first gunshots went off, it would be breakfast over. I'm suspecting that they are either covering for a slaughter of prisoners, or concocting a story to get someone a medal (perhaps even posthumously).

Ofc because this is absolute bs. if you believe 15 soldiers will sit in some house eating breakfast while 50m away from them there was gun fire to be heard, you are so gullible it is unreal. This here is quite obviously very exaggerated and everyone should doubt this happened.

Lol neighbor growing up landed in Normandy and was wounded. Used to bust his balls sneaking into his garden and hitting all sorts of things into his yard growing up. Baseballs. Rocks. Etc. Good times. Grandfather got a medal from France serving. A cousin ran across a Japanese patrol in the pacific and eliminated it. Guy was nuts. We all joked its because they thought he was one of them. Dark Italian. Slightly slant eyed. And friend of the family flew in a flying fortress. Guy could talk for days. I loved it. Called him "Papa" only found out later he wasnt even a family member. Always will be to me now. Shrugs. What a generation.

Awesome video! You should do the US Rangers on D-Day. Grandfather was in the 5th Rangers, survived D-Day at Point Du Hoc, and fought up to Saint-Lo in July. 2nd & 5th Rangers Battalions lost almost 70% of their men on D-Day to take out the long-range howitzers pointed at the beaches. Most likely saved thousands of men on the beaches.
Got the Bronze Star & 2 Purple Hearts in WW2. Saved by a Sherman crew at Saint-Lo. Served as a police officer for 25 years & died from cancer in 2000. Miss you, Grandpa

I don't carry many regrets in life, but 99% of them are questions I never asked him about his service once I was old enough to appreciate what it was. He also served as a police officer in Ohio afterword.

My grandpa was in the same boat as well regarding his service. He only told how he, alongside other GIs, was saved by a brave Sherman crew at Saint Lo amid the massive barrage of artillery hitting the town.
He got wounded by mortar shrapnel, helping the 29th Infantry take the town. The tank commander was the only causality during the rescue.
He was reminded of the war when he lost a good friend during the 1974 BWI hijacking that was targeting Nixon. He carried a morphine capsule around his neck every day, given the ankle injury he got from the war.

Bud, shutt the fuck up. If your life is so lukewarm that you think yourself ready to throw your life away under any dumbass circumstance becuause two randomass people are asking you to, then thats really your issue. What those 15 people did is what most self respecting and sane people would do. What Summers did was incredible and to think that every finger wagging moralizer would have the gumption to do what he did by virtue of their finger wagging, is something akin to thinking every girl that tarnishes the reputation of another as a whore, must herself be chaste by consequence of her accusations concerning another. Virtue is rare because its difficult and those that would cast judgment and shame in cases of life and death are almost always the furthest thing from those virtues they pretend to. Busybodies and brown nosing wretches are the majority of the "self-sacrificing" "patriots" that prattle, preach, and reprehend common and understandable moral failures.

I remember being on one of the landing beaches... My heart broke thinking of all the young men dying, because my ancestors decided to go the way of hatred.
But looking through one of the lookouts of an old bunker, I could see the sea. It was easy to imagine it being dawn. Goosebumps broke out on my skin as I imagined thousands of ships appearing on the horizon. I could feel the terror of the German soldiers and felt joy. Joy because this brave coming army had freed us - even if we didn't know we needed to be at the time.
But I still felt sadness at the loss of life and a deep sorrow as I looked onto the terrain and realized, that these holes were shellmade. How much horror did both sides have to endure? I cannot fathom.
Thank you, soldier, who died too young far away from home. I will remember you. Thank you.

So many crucial actions by the paratroopers on this day to support the landings. Summers' assault is less known than Winters' assault on the Brecourt Batteries, but both likely saved a ton of American livee and ensured the landings could move along. Not to mention the many other paratroopers fighting to secure strongpoints further in land and delay German communications/troop movement.
Operation Overlord wasnt just a naval invasion. It was the ultimate culmination of combined arms and interservice coordination. The Germans were gonna have a hell of a time stopping it (if they ever had a realistic hope)

11:36 Yeah, this was pointed out, before, but the Thompson submachine gun was chambered in .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) ammunition, which was a subsonic round, as opposed to the FAR more robust and powerful (to say nothing of supersonic) .44 caliber round, which wasn't in use much during WWII, and didn't really come into prominence -- as the .44 Special, and later as its bigger brother, the .44 Magnum -- until the mid-50s.
I'm fairly certain the .44 would have blown the breech of a Thompson if the rounds could have been made to fit.
