Mister was THAT song that put them on the map, and still the song most associated to them. There isn't an official music video for the Korean original version because it was only supposed to be a B-side that they would performed in the first week of their album promotions but it went massively viral, totally overshadowing the actual title track Wanna. They ended up doing Mister instead for the succeeding weeks of album promotions. Mister was chosen to be their Japanese debut song, hence the Japanese version being the only one with an official music video. Kara was massive in Japan, even overtaking SNSD's crazy success there.
Break It is a very interesting choice. It is their debut song but it also flopped HARD so they had an immediate image change with the next release (main vocalist left too and Hara and Jiyoung were added). Most people recognize this lineup as the “official” lineup and consider their first comeback, Rock U, to essentially be a redebut. Rock U and Honey being a very different concept from Mister onwards. (Honey being their first win on a music show too)
WOW. WOW. WOW. Viva 2nd Gen!! Kara was such a big deal, icons in KPOP. 2nd Gen was such a good time with the big 4 gg’s SNSD, Wonder Girls, 2ne1 & Kara. Kara dominated the Japanese market & were the girls on top over there & at home they were so beloved every time they returned from there overseas activities it was a heroes welcome back home. Tbh as a SONE & a Blackjack the rivalry between the 2 never made sense to me (Comparisons don’t make sense in general but 2ne1 & SNSD were worlds apart in terms of identity) I always thought SNSD & Kara made more sense from concepts like Lupin-Run Devil Run to Honey-Kissing you. Fan wars in general were so weird back then. I miss shows like Invincible youth where the 2nd Gen girlies were always having fun together, good times :’( Loved that you pointed out Hara’s talent in dancing she was such a star R.I.P ❤️
Kara and their Sweetune producers were what defined the beginning of the distinction of kpop “look and feel” for me, compared to the jpop I’d followed prior. Because of that impact for me, and my preference for the glitzier, ever escalating Sweetune sound, they remain my favorite kpop group. Truly, though, the whole 2nd gen was a golden era full of explosive exploration and expression.
Lupin is like one of my favorite songs from the 2nd gen, everything just hits the right way for me!!! I only wish there was already a remastered version of the mv, cuz that 240p resolution is not it lmao I just wanna appreciate it in its full glory!!!
After the debut, Seunghee left the group (a rumor said her mom didn’t want her to be a singer). DSP - their old company added Hara and Jiyoung in the group. Jiyoung trained for 2 weeks then joined right away 😂 she’s skilled and good on stage
I'm so happy you decided to react to them, they've been my favorite 2nd gen group for a long time and it's nice to see someone take the time to listen to their music and react to them. I can't wait for their comeback, hopefully you'll react to it and see Youngji apart of them as well.
just fyi.....you watched the japanese version of Mister. The only video of the korean Mister is a stage performance in the same outfits with red bottoms/white tops. I don't know if I can explain the impact of this song......the catchiness, the outfits, the butt dance....this was viral before viral was even a word in the lexicon. By the time Mister and Lupin came out Sulli was certified (RIP). This era of girl group kpop is divisive in my mind. The industry went HARD on selling sex and these girls were very much commoditized and many of them were YOUNG. Seungyeon has pretty openly talked about how the constant dieting, the image, etc really messed with her head (and her body)
I remember these like yesterday….yes I’m old. I was a fan when these first came out. Sunghee would have been amazing…it’s so sad her dad pulled her out. She definitely would have been an amazing solo artist. Amazing looks and vocals. She was supposed to be the next Lee Hyori for DSP. Losing her is basically the reason why Kara fell behind SNSD and Wonder Girls.
Kara had to fight to be where they were they debuted with DSP which had one of the top 1st Gen groups but that didn’t transfer over into instant success for them unlike their peers Wonder Girls and SNSD. The girl who debuted with them Sunghee had to leave because her parents told her if she didn’t succeed in the first year she had to leave to go to school, and well they flopped. So she had to leave, that’s when they held the auditions for two members and we got Hara and Jiyoung. Their first win came with their song Honey in 2009. Mr was actually a b side to their title song Wanna but it went VIRAL and became a syndrome across not only SK but Japan as well the Mr. video you watched is from their Japanese debut because they never actually hd a video for Mr. after Mr. exploded they went on to dominate along with SNSD. And they became the top kpop gg in Japan and the first kpop girl group to top the Oricon charts since it’s inception.
I'm a big fan of "Break It" and the debut album it's from, but the reason for it being a commercial failure is because many people felt that the sound was a bit outdated and that they sounded too similar to Fin.K.L who were a 1st gen girl group from the same label.
If you're new to KARA, I rec you to listen to their title tracks from the beginning til now: - Break It, Rock You, Pretty Girl, Honey, Wanna, Mr, Lupin, Jumping, Step, Pandora, Damaged Lady, Mamma Mia, Cupid, When I Move Others that I like: If You Wanna, Secret World, Ing, Dear Kamilia (a special song dedicated to fandom), Day Dream (GyuRi solo song), Guilty (Seung Yeon solo song), Wanna Do (Ji Young solo song), Runaway, Lonely, Secretly Secretly, Magic, Story - If You Wanna and Secret World are like 2000s pop, US-UK era inspired - Ing, I watched the per of this song and was shocked by Hara's vocal - Dear Kamilia (special song for fandom) - Solo songs - Runaway, Loney, Secretly Secretly, Magic, Story - Pop ballad category
I can't believe people are getting into KARA again T^T I'm so happy, I thought they were gonna be forgotten. Also I don't think they have tans, that's just like natural skin tone lol The skin whitening business reaaaally boomed in the mid-2010s... >.> That's also around the time the different hair colors became a trend in kpop, tho I think that's just a weird coincidence haha.
I don’t know about “Break It,” specifically (and I won’t look it up despite the internet being right there), but it’s funny you mention how British it sounds. The Koreans were buying songs from the same British and Swedish hitmakers as many other top global pop acts (back then and continuing through today). Of course they’ve got stables of talented domestic writers and producers, but it was always an international affair from its inception.
Had to split this reaction into two because UA-cam was not allowing it as one full thing for some reason, sorry for the abrupt end! Enjoy!

Ah, Goo hara was my bias. She'll forever be remembered, but it's sad how she left us and that she's no longer here.

Nice to see Kara on here. Definitely one of the girl groups I love from that generation

Ooooh interesting. I just picked it as I always want to check out a groups debut.

Feeling this nostalgia so hard. So iconic
I can’t believe they were this good of vocalist at their debut at their young age..insane
And the whole group?!
After the debut, Seunghee left the group (a rumor said her mom didn’t want her to be a singer). DSP - their old company added Hara and Jiyoung in the group. Jiyoung trained for 2 weeks then joined right away 😂 she’s skilled and good on stage
im glad you were able to get this videos up
Thanks! I’m so glad I got it up at last.

Please do one for Wonder Girls, as well.
Kara always had the best hooks for me
One of my favorite girl groups back then.

Didn’t Kara debut before snsd?
They did indeed. KARA debuted in March 2007. SNSD didn’t debut until August.
What is the song of your intro? I really like it. Sounds like a boy band.
It’s Girls Generation - Paper plane but slowed! Glad you like it
حلوااااتتت مين هذول
It’s KARA! They’re a 2nd generation KPOP girl group.
오잉 미스터 일본어버전이네
actually there's a better quality and aspect ratio of this mv but you have to search 'kara lupin 1080'.
