This short takes place after the events in a flashback in the Lackadaisy comic (starting in Lackadaisy Gravediggers and ending in Lackadaisy Bygones), long before the events in the animated pilot. Victor and Mordecai were in a brawl/gunfight with some rival gangsters, during which Mordecai did, in fact, fall down some stairs and break his arm - and then stabbed a guy with a piece of the broken railing. Victor was telling the truth about not losing his eye in the war, though. While he did serve in the military during the Great War (WW1), he lost his eye after moving to the US while participating in a worker's strike before the beginning of the story.
I love the interaction between Ivy and Viktor in this one. He stars out very closed off, but she has little trouble getting him to talk more - indeed he'll say more words to her than to anyone else. Also, Viktor's telling the truth that Mordecai fell down the stairs, but then turns the rest of it into a silly, child-friendly story. And by the end, he's legit trying to protect her from the dangers of this life. (Not that she'll ever listen, of course...)
"Oh no. It's precocious." A new pilot came out earlier this week, called "Dungeon Flipper." It's about selling real estate in a fantasy world. Also, i came across a series recently that has been out for a while. It's called "Madtown," and is done by Trash panda animation. It's about a guy who made deal with death, but it si mostly a comedy.
One thing not many noticed is how the crew uses sound and music in a unique way. unlike other shows, there is no background music for the viewers to tell the mood. just subtle sounds of the city life with trains, people about their day and a small bit of music but it was coming from far off like it was someone listening to a record player or a radio outside. it almost mimics real life...until Ivy finds the door. then the music is gone and we get the subtle yet unsettling silence as she puts the clues together. it is just small details overall and it works for Lackadaisy.

Ya gotta love how tough, morally ambiguous rum runners may have a body count behind them... but one curious child will throw them off their stride completely. Mordecai not knowing how to deal with smol child is so perfect. Double entendres, veiled threats, completely bounce off her and he just doesn't want to deal with it! Say it's scary and she'll go, "bet!" Tell her it's dangerous and it just makes her want to learn more! Such an amazing job of combining adorable and treacherous. And then his partner trying to dissemble! As always, love your attention to detail, Neaveh. Wondering how I can convince you to watch some anime that I've been obsessing over.

there is a lot for a small short that is about five minutes. We see little Ivy as a little girl and how she got into the lifestyle. even hints of trouble at home with Ruby who I think might be her father or older brother. And the scene with Atlas, the big boss himself. No words were spoken and tension alone had so much character before the smile and arms held out. like Ruby we are like 'oh shit what's about to happen?'. and some more of Mordecai, showing his dry wit even if Ivy didn't fully understand what he said. the look of fear once he saw she was interested was so relatable. This is their first meeting but from the pilot they will have a slight bond. it was hinted there was something but now we all but confirmed it. Mordecai only hesitated slightly after lining up the shot on Rocky and he still took the shot. for Ivy, however, he held it for longer and still couldn't pull the trigger. we got hints of history and this merely confirms it. Victor was a surprise, man of few words at first like in the pilot and he seemed like it would be the same here. a tough Russian that is the muscles but then he surprised us when he opened up to Ivy. he didn't talk down on her like an adult to a child but conversed normally with her. He didn't reveal the truth nor too much but he indulged in her questions. even joked around at Mordecai's expense. and the look on Mordecai's face, the pure indignation was perfect. Victor truly seemed to enjoy the small talk but realized he was getting too close. he was harsh but he clearly was trying to keep her from getting into danger by going down the rabbit hole. But Ivy wasn't deterred and like the little nosy detective, noticed some things and figured out what happened. and if you look back on the door Victor was fixing, the inside of it had extra steel plating to prevent bullets from getting through. they didn't need to add that and yet paints more a subtle picture. and of course, when Ivy calls them out, their eyes tell so much but Victor is like, 'now who's gangsta?' with a slight smirk as he accepts her. so much details yet tell so so much.

Also, something else I noticed, but when Ivy is asking Mordecai about his gun, you can see her eyes dart around while she's talking (3:59), almost like she's trying to come up with a reason herself while she's talking. It actually makes her look kinda smart and have the question not be one of those 'kids being insensitive' moments

Head canon until proven otherwise, as we haven't seen any other animals yet. That they are all actually cat sized but we don't realize it as everything is built to their scale...after typing that out I think we did see a tree that disproves this, but I still love the idea.

it's sweet that he feels comfortable eventually talking more with her and wants to protect her, but some people just won't tolerate being protected
