im hmong from the u.s. but it has always been a dream of mine's to visit china and the hmong people over there and try to trace back my family routes.. :)
The description made a mistake for the name of the song. The name 镇远 is a town of Guizhou province. So it should be translated to The Beautiful Zhenyuan Town.
I'm proud to be hmong but more proud of my surname Xiong, which originated back to the legendary emperor Huang Di which is known for Yu Xiong. Origin traces it to the end of the Shang dynasty in the 12th century bc. His descendants adapted this name as their surname so no matter the Xiong tribe is the strongest. Not to be rude. As my family and its ancester have been carrying this surname.
i'm not 100% sure the sources i got were reliable but i did do research on Hmong for my senior high school project. Miao means "barbarian", given to us by the emperor of China who wanted to cultivate our culture and way of speach to benefit china. We didn't like it and refused to change for him so he kicked us out (the ones who refused) or we could leave on our own. We then re-named ourselves Hmong meaning "free people". Another cool fact...Hmong apparently originated from Siberia. Cool huh? :)
hmong/miao came to 'china' thru the burma corridor along with chinese, tibetans and others. hmong/chinese/tibetans all branched off the same y-dna O3 genome, so yes we are related. we all started heading north from the burma corridor, but hmong people branched off first and followed the yangtze river and developed our civilization along it; including being the first to cultivate rice in 'china'. the chinese went further north till they found the yellow river and settled along it.
@SuperJalen2009 well in china, hmong are refer as miao,, because thats what chinese people would them, but in south east asia to america, hmong refer themselves as hmong.
The reason we change cus in Laos, Lao pp call us Meo as a cat not Miao as young grass. It is an insulted to us so we change. Would u like someone to called ur ethnic cat? Proud to be called Miao.
@xxtinabinaxx The word Miao (苗) means sprout. I don't know for sure if the Chinese were trying force our Hmong people to assimilate into the Chinese culture (not for sure if it's the Han Chinese, Mongol or Manchu cuz the Chinese empire is always changing rulers), but I think it's more of forcefully taking the land that we lived on and making us pay taxes for it.
@xxtinabinaxx Miao does not mean barbarian. Not a fact. It's only a theory and it has already been discredit. Hmong are not from Siberia. Hmong does not mean free at all.
Any Chinese speaker out there. If you would be kind enough to translate this song to engish maybe every body else can understand it. Beautiful song but she could be cussing me out and don't even know it.
@AtarashiNOhi other people had more to do with hmong/miao assimilation and diaspora than the chinese. in the 5th century, there was a mass migration of chinese from the north who slowly started to displace the hmong/miao from central china. this was caused by the invasions from the NOMADIC TRIBES north of china. they pressured the chinese, who in turn pressured us. we had relative peace in Guizhou until MANCHU qing china interfered. same in Yunnan until MONGOL yuan china interfered.
