What a wonderful woman. I have lived in Mill Valley for 38 years. I hope to see her around town and thank her for her remarkable efforts. The world needs more creative minds like hers.
Really interesting and I will certainly be checking out her book, from local library, but it saddened me that so many seats were empty at her talk and the way they were obviously disbelieving her on many things which she had obviously spent time researching and getting ALL the facts. I have often wondered about those dog poopy bags and it's shocking that there are people who have to stand and pick those bags out of the compostable conveyor and empty them! And she made me smile when she talked about her favorite plant at the airport. I am saddened by the negativity of people in regards to trying to like a more sustainable life. The people who take a bag, not because they need one but because it is free. The people who knew they would be shopping but either didn't bring bags or "Left it in the car". Good for Bea and the people like her who are searching for better ways to live and to help our planet. Long may they continue to fight to make this world a better place for everyone and every living thing.
I agree so much. How anyone has the nerve to criticise such trail blazing baffles me. The important thing to focus on is the sheer power of her determination and what she has achieved. Any of us can harness this determination in our own lives. That is inspiring. In a society filled with plastic and consumerism it takes so much heart and courage to buck the overlying trend instead of caving in and/or following the herd. So much respect for this woman and all that are inspired to change their lives as a result of her inspiration.
The one thing I hate about the zero waste movement is how some people are so strict. The earth doesn’t need one person to do things perfectly, but many imperfectly. That’s why I aim for a low waste lifestyle instead. It’s a more reachable goal and doesn’t sound as intimidating
Bea is doing such an amazing job. I love how she does it with such elegance and style. Since I discovered her, I learned I can make all these personal care products myself, like toothpaste, sunscreen etc. It's been SO much fun!!!
Some of us nearly died from no animal protein. I am allergic to soy, wheat, dairy, and beans. I did not know this during my 14 years as a strict vegetarian. Some folks really cannot do it. Fresh fruits and veggies-yes; nuts-yes. No digestible protein = HUGE problem.
Because God gave us animals to eat but do not eat Pork it's unclean. Also follow the muslim way how to slaughter the animals it's the correct way if you love Allah
MusicMan she's not telling people how to live, she's providing people with ideas and opportunities. This is how she did this with her family. She's showing that there are ways to be low impact without starving yourself or having an ugly home.
At the 47 minute mark where she talks about using glass and the word typed is TEAR, its actually TARE which is when you place the empty glass container on the scale and its zero's out so you then start from 0 weight and then once the food item is placed inside it weighs ONLY the food itself.
+Angelika I would imagine that hearing impaired persons who use the closed captioning to experience this talk would care. I also noticed at 48:03 they transcribed "know that" but I believe she's saying "did an audit," which refers to a specific term in waste management, a "waste audit," cf www.nrdc.org/enterprise/greeningadvisor/wm-audits.asp
+Jennifer Arrow Close captioning is never accurate. Never has been never will be. I was really referring to Beth's definition of TARE. Was giving the definition of TARE really necessary or does Beth think she is smarter than everyone else?
I think a lot of these ideas are really great. Some of them, because of my location in a small city in a prairie province that has very few of the fancier health food stores with orange juice squeezing machines, and is -30 C outside in the winter (so more driving or bussing because of the threatening snow/cold), are not feasible for me at the moment, but I'm definitely going to try to utilize as many as these ideas as I can!
Andrea Martineau i don't think it is about buying at Whole Foods necessarily but at the smaller local businesses. Btw i looked up how to make my own olive oil soap, easy, cheap and useful for everything. Same with a couple of toiletries. Like she says we don't need much.
Interesting about the plastic cups at a green event. that was the same as at a sustainable event at my home town. It was ridiculous, plstic coffee cups and water cups everywhere, plastic water bottles, ugh! Ridiculous.
I love how this woman has reduced her family's waste to surprisingly little and randos on the internet have to devalue her efforts because she eats some meat.
Hmm, on one site u don't know how much she is actually eating and one has to admit that having zero waste everything but excluding food is still the most difficult change for people. As well as one shouldn't forget how bit of an impact animal farming actually is. Yes, she mightve found lots of ways to reduce visible waste but invisible went over her head for sure
Imagine if you go vegan (whole foods plant based) and are a zero waster! You will maximize reducing your negative impacts exponentially. I mean that would probably surpass monk status. Unison with the planet. I am going to work towards that! I love my planet and my fellow earthlings!

Most vegans are extremists and fascists (just look at all the comments here from vegans). They hate meat-eaters and force everyone to become vegan. Zero waste and minimalist lifestyles on the other hand are decisions that one makes for himself and don't harm others.
+{FIRST_NAME} {LAST_NAME} How do they force them? By talking? You might dont like that a minority who is RIGHT is talking. That is not forcing. If they force you go to police.
{FIRST_NAME} {LAST_NAME} you obviously haven't met a lot of vegans I know many and none are extremist or fascist. We do have the right to be though because eating animals is cruel and harmful to the environment. So yes, sometimes maybe people get hyped up about that, however no one can force you to do something you don't want to do though. Maybe it's your conscious that's taking it all so personally?
"There is a God out there that always takes care of me". That's where it's at for me. God takes such good care of us and He gave us this beautiful earth to take care of us-- we should be taking care of it back.

Oh noo the vegetable peeler is amazing plus I do my compost and I lived in Florida the soil is sandy and the compost is black gold girl. Try the kitchen aid brand best vegetable peeler ever.
Thank you for this, I'm going to buy your book and have already taken steps toward this zero waste lifestyle. I feel happier thinking about the changes I am making and am going to make, we do not have to be surrounded by plastics! Fantastic talk.
Thank Bea for telling us your expericences! So inspiring! I would really like this video to have Spanish substitles so I can share with more friends and family.
This is one of the best talks I've ever seen..Yeah this is certainly not Pumping Iron or Hitler's documentary or even, for that matter, March of the Penguins.. But, in a different way, this is one of the best videos I've ever seen..
Great talk, great tips. I would extend the compost idea to a worm box. The worms eat your veggie scraps and their castings enrich your garden : ) Thanks Bea!
The "compostable" green bags are supposed to be used in a landfill. Not a composting facility. They break down faster than normal plastic bags IN A LANDFILL. If it dissolves in less than forever in a landfill, it "composts".
Another great way to focus on zero waste is by encouraging, supporting, and investing in a c.s.a's, farmer's marketing, and co-op's within your community. As a result, you actually have a source to purchase local & bulk, accessibility makes zero waste even possible. I encourage you to support the a food co-op business model=community owned grocery store-open to all. This will help you to maintain zero waste while impacting your community, food, and the environment. Take ownership in everything you do especially where you shop. Check out our food co-op link we need your help, thanks for reading and peace to all. www.indiegogo.com/projects/sugar-beet-food-co-op-sign-campaign-local#/
i dont think ill become such an extreme zero waste minimalist. but im moving to my own apartment in the next few months and ill definitely incorporate some of the things they do. partly bc of the lack of space haha

Elizabeth Lloyd thank you I found a place in Chelsea market called the filling station You first buy the size bottle of olive oil you want and then you can bring it back to be refilled.
I'm glad she is buying organic because that is saving a lot of lives, conventional produce is killing a lot of humans, the harvesters, because seem to care for them. Most vegans only care for animals which is very considering the abuse that harvesters suffer in conventional farms. Organic farms care so much for their workers as well as for the animals, that's something I want to support.
Mao Yu Maybe she will go vegan in the future. We can hope! I've been vegan for about a year and a half now and I'm currently transitioning to zero waste. It's challenging, but I'm enjoying it :-)
+Rehana Sara Yeah, maybe! Good for you! Of course it's not as easy as it may seem, but it's an awesome way of living :) So peaceful when you get rid of everything.
These are all grand ideas. But do you know of any British equivalent of the bulk bins? e.g. where might have them? Because I can't seem to find any place just by Googling it and I know some people might be more clued up than me. :)
I just emailed Pepperidge farm (Campbels) to ask them to stop putting the plastic trays in their cookie packages. They are the only packaged cookies I buy. I am sue there is a thick cardboard they can use. Lots of tips here! thanks
Water pic. Helps fighting gum disease and plaque and bad breath and cavities. I wish I had known about it years ago! My breath is so fresh all the time. It's amazing. I also use the baking soda and activated charcoal to keep my teeth bright white. I get compliments all the time
At 5:15 you talk about the no poo method and that your husband said he doesn't like the smell of the vinegar. You said you would have a solution, but you didn't mention what this solution is. I would love to get an answer, because I have the same problem that my partner hates this smell. So please help me! 😊
I wonder if the zero waste community wonder or care for the waste that bulk store produce, which must be less than regular stores but still there is waste. Also, all the stores even second hand produce waste, so, I wonder, why would they call themselves zero waste if they are still making waste? I think that a more appropriate label for them would be low waste
Many stores actually print two receipts, so you could simply not take it and use online billing to manage your finances. The other option is to reuse it as note paper since the printer ink does fade so fast. Lastly, shred and compost. The online option would work well since many companies(not sure about air lines) are going in the direction of electronic boarding passes and bar codes that can be scanned off of phones now.
You aren’t supposed to compost bones. They are animal products and contaminate a compost. But otherwise, I love this! We are so wasteful and think it’s the only way to be or that it’s normal!
Not sure about this. How can animal products that have been worn and worked down to their minimal aspects be able to contaminate compost? Aren't there bacteria and bugs that can work it away? Or are you talking about city composts that use grinders and bacteria? Just curious.
I've already changed for the minimum at home - I even moved to a studio ;) but starting a zero waste plan will be more difficult for sure. Cause it doesn't depend of us only... But we should all try
I'm guessing the alternative to Lip Plumper is NOT Lip Plumper. Also, the alternative to toilet paper is a thick wet rag(wash cloth) then washing said hands often. Depending on the religion of the people that can see you, choose the hand you eat with. One may have to practice. Please, still wash both. Wash often whether you need to or not.
I don't really have a problem with the idea of minimalist lifestyle, but when the lady said she was going to can all the food she uses in a year and a one day! Not unless she has a commercial kitchen and a whole lot of help.
+SingtingzIsReady The video equivalent of "too long, didn't read." Along those lines, I'm always surprised by the seemingly poor physical audience at Google. I'd want to go to most of these presentations.
The problem is supermarkets in my country do not allow their customers to go in with their bags. They should be put in the front counter and are allowed to be taken only after we finish shopping. :(
hello Bea. I loved the video, wanted to know if you have any commercial type projects? I have been asked by a business park to put together a proposal for Zero Waste at the location. any help would be great..
What if somebody wants to start a minimalist living and zero waste lifestyle at the same time. He/she has to declutter, but at the same time he/she also cannot throw the waste. How to resolve it?
Beyond Green donate things that you are getting rid of rather than just binning it :) also don't through anything out until it is broken and only replace for a zero waste alternative at that point
Always eat organic meats to protect animals (they are expensive because they pay a lot to make sure their animals have a good life before feeding us and they donate money to organizations that protect animals) even vegetables that are non organic have a terrible side effect on the humans behind, did you know that those farmers get cancer and lung diseases because of pesticides? Let's eat organic! Meat and vegetables! Like we are supposed to eat!
While organic is a powerful movement, it's not as progressive as it could be. Many pesticides can still be used on organic food and many organic regulations do not encourage progressive waste management programs. Lets work with our law makers to make sure organic becomes what we need it to be, and keep supporting it so it can be the true normal :)
I see this lifestyle to be the future of our species. I love that she's not vegan and eat a very balanced diet, I just can't believe a family of 4 has just collected a jar of garbage. Sorry, but it's impossible if you leave on planet Earth!!!
What is the ultimate motive of Zero Waste? Is it to have a paid vacation? When your saving is reinvested to care and share the nature and unprivileged community, I'll be serious listening to you, Bea.
While the 'they paid for our vacation' line did throw me off, it may be more comforting to think that "instead of staying in a hotel and using those little plastic soaps and paper disposables where housekeeping might come in and waste energy and resources cleaning every day, we can earn some money by having people stay in a zero waste home and experience what it's like to reduce their consumable nature". Not to mention that many natural and state parks use the revenue from vacationers and tourists to keep the environment protected and provided for. Also, it is a talk presented to google employees. If you are looking for an unprivileged community then you are looking in the wrong spot.
Instead of cooking with oil, use lemon/lime/orange juice. Healthy and much tastier. Use salt for tooth paste. In the old days, people didn't have the tooth paste or floss, and had functionable teech.
Your cell phone can be a good alternative for note taking. Aside from that, have you looked into making your own ink and caligraphy or dip pen styles? Many can be made from glass, metal, and wood to avoid plastic.
For everything electronic, use your devices as little as possible, do not purchase if you do not need, make sure that if you are thinking of replacing something to make sure that you did use it as much as possible and that there are no reasons it would need to be replaced sooner(screen protectors/phone cases are plastic but extend the life of the phone by at least a year). Try to buy devices the same size or type as your previous ones to avoid building up unnecessary chargers, cables, and carrying cases. Make sure to recycle at local electronic recycle events. A good option for computers is to build one yourself so you can do research on each part to try to find the best possible option. And with the experience of learning to build a computer if it needs to be fixed you can replace a single part or two instead of the entire thing. Its not much, but its a good start since it's hard to be part of modern society without access to electronics. Personally still own a pair of blue tooth ear buds for almost two years and my phone is over three years old and still works as well as my husbands brand new one, minus the memory space.
If you are interested in saving more money by changing habits a little bit every day, I wrote a short tip book as well, here: www.amazon.com/Getting-Ahead-Staying-Behind-Beneath/dp/1492387762/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1470928686&sr=1-3&keywords=%22eric+santaiti%22
In many parts of the world, Africa and South East Asia, people don't use toilet paper. They have water pistol gun or water in bucket. No waste and healthier.
They have it in Japan too! Have you tried it? Personally have been using the toilet right before the shower as often as reasonable to save on water and paper waste.

+Leyna Stemle She did and they eat way less meat than before :)
+Mao Yu It's such a shame they're not vegan though, as the vegan lifestyle would tie in BEAUTIFULLY with being zero waste.
+Rehana Sara I know right. It would be such a great thing.
Em Freeman check out a channel called "ECO BOOST" i
A British girl hosts it she has good #zerowaste ideas and you can ask her.
thezerowaster.com/zero-waste-living-uk/
Her website is so much better I think!
I just emailed Pepperidge farm (Campbels) to ask them to stop putting the plastic trays in their cookie packages. They are the only packaged cookies I buy. I am sue there is a thick cardboard they can use. Lots of tips here! thanks
Does anybody know of a vegan alternative to the silk-as-floss concept?
+Samantha Wright I think organic cotton would work just as well.
Samantha Wright you should check out Lauren Singer's channel, i think she has a video on flossing that is waste free and vegan :)
Samantha Wright try a water pik or a metal gum stimulator
takes a lot of coal and h20 to run millions of waterpiks. plus they're made of plastic.
She mentioned they use a bulk bar soap for hair, body, etc...
you can also use shikakai, or chickpeas flour with some water to make a paste, and use some essential oil for a better smell.
she said she used bar soap for her hair/body and gets conditioner from a pump at her local market. : )
Ansalexandra S. I mix a few drops of peppermint oil and a few drops of lavender oil into ACV.
bravo👍👍👍
I wonder if the zero waste community wonder or care for the waste that bulk store produce, which must be less than regular stores but still there is waste. Also, all the stores even second hand produce waste, so, I wonder, why would they call themselves zero waste if they are still making waste? I think that a more appropriate label for them would be low waste
so inspiring!
What about when you travel on planes, !???what about the boarding pases, or at the supermarket what do you do with the ticket from the bill
How about the junk mail keeping coming to our mail box? Today we listened to her video in Climate Action Course at Stanford.
So excited about this! Can you please invest in fixing the Android app? It has many bugs. :/
I'm going zero waste so my plastic doesn't end up in the ocean or the landfill. So horrible for animals, and they don't deserve it!
I've already changed for the minimum at home - I even moved to a studio ;) but starting a zero waste plan will be more difficult for sure. Cause it doesn't depend of us only... But we should all try
Whilst I applaud this lady and her efforts, it is a hell of lot easier to do all of this stuff when you don't have a day job.
Once you get your life figured out it goes on autopilot, but yes, it does take some time.
She addresses this at 34:47 :)
She has a full time professional job, as does her husband, and 2 kids - it's something you have to make time for if you want to commit!
shes actually a full time pofessional
I can't see the bulk app on Android in Australia ,,,,😏
I'm guessing the alternative to Lip Plumper is NOT Lip Plumper.
Also, the alternative to toilet paper is a thick wet rag(wash cloth) then
washing said hands often. Depending on the religion of the people that can see you, choose the hand you eat with.
One may have to practice. Please, still wash both. Wash often whether you need to or not.
I'd like to buy the book but I would buy her eye makeup TODAY if she could somehow sell it without plastic packaging. Is that possible?
While watching this talk I regularly get rid of half the stuff in any given cupboard!
I cant find her app
I don't really have a problem with the idea of minimalist lifestyle, but when the lady said she was going to can all the food she uses in a year and a one day! Not unless she has a commercial kitchen and a whole lot of help.
Three kids and a husband might help a bit! ^-^"
Seriously though, ii thought the same thing! o.o
that app didn't work for my phone kept telling me to restart my phone apparently others have the same conplaint
how do these videos have less than 10K views when there are more than 300K subscribers?
+SingtingzIsReady The video equivalent of "too long, didn't read." Along those lines, I'm always surprised by the seemingly poor physical audience at Google. I'd want to go to most of these presentations.
The problem is supermarkets in my country do not allow their customers to go in with their bags. They should be put in the front counter and are allowed to be taken only after we finish shopping. :(
Zero Waste Queen!
Yes she is!
hello Bea. I loved the video, wanted to know if you have any commercial type projects? I have been asked by a business park to put together a proposal for Zero Waste at the location. any help would be great..
Are they saying no to condoms or can you compost them?
What if somebody wants to start a minimalist living and zero waste lifestyle at the same time. He/she has to declutter, but at the same time he/she also cannot throw the waste. How to resolve it?
Saraswati Devi that's a good question. I think you can declutter first and then become waste free? i'm not sure haha
+cookie dough
Hahaha... It's like saying, "I am starting zero waste by throwing lots of waste."
Beyond Green donate things that you are getting rid of rather than just binning it :) also don't through anything out until it is broken and only replace for a zero waste alternative at that point
Beyond Green decluttering doesn’t mean everything goes to landfill... donate, recycle, gift, sell etc. so many options!
Bea caught me wastin
If you are looking for an unprivileged community then you are looking in the wrong spot.
cinnamon oil is a great lip plumping . my lip balm :Hurraww tinted balm
Instead of cooking with oil, use lemon/lime/orange juice. Healthy and much tastier. Use salt for tooth paste. In the old days, people didn't have the tooth paste or floss, and had functionable teech.
Not sure if "functionable" is the goal with teeth in a time where taking proper care of yourself can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Wow!!!
How do you buy a zero waste pencil and eraser
Memorize in the head.
Your cell phone can be a good alternative for note taking. Aside from that, have you looked into making your own ink and caligraphy or dip pen styles? Many can be made from glass, metal, and wood to avoid plastic.
Good to know you are all well off to afford moving houses easily
IN LOVE
What about electronics? Computers? Phones? Ear phones?
You would use a lot less waste if you didn't eat meat... it's such a unsustainable business...
+Davis Schaffer Agreed.
PineapplePoko But why do things in a half-arsed way? Just go vegan!
okay , so is it safe to assume that you produce less waste than her? Nothing and no one is perfect but she is doing a damn fine job.
who knows. but it's ignorant for her to say she's "ZERO waste" or "waste FREE" while supporting a wasteful industry.
I agree, thank you
If you are interested in saving more money by changing habits a little bit every day, I wrote a short tip book as well, here: www.amazon.com/Getting-Ahead-Staying-Behind-Beneath/dp/1492387762/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1470928686&sr=1-3&keywords=%22eric+santaiti%22
