  • The War of 1853-1856 is most often known as The Crimean War. But the battle for the Crimea was only one episode of a much bigger war. The confrontation between the Russian Empire on the one hand and the Allied Forces of the British Empire, France, Turkey and the Kingdom of Sardinia on the other affected a huge territory stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean. In fact, it was a war for world domination - in effect a world war.
    What were the overt and covert reasons that caused the confrontation between the great powers in the middle of the XIX century? How it all started and what role the Russian Empire ultimately played on the world political stage is all told in this challenging and insightful new four-part documentary series, WORLD WAR 0.

    Fascinating to see the Crimean War from the Russian perspective. Of course all countries view their history through nationalist glasses. The series bombards one with facts. As a Brit I could dispute some of them. But the really great thing about this series, and also the one on the Romanovs, are the superb historical reconstructions which look as if no expense was spared. Well done !

      Btw there is not only The British Crown acted like a traitor toward Russian Czar Nikolai 1, the same did emperor of Austro -Hungarian empire in 1848 who promised to Nikolai with his parole d'honneur to save the lives of Hungarian rebels. Nevertheless all of them had been executed. After that Nikolai 1 said that the lesson is Do not trust Austrians. Period. And later in 1918 The British Crown rejected an offer of Lenin to save the lives of the family of Czar Nikolai 2, which then had been killed by members of Socialist Party (not bolsheviks)

      @варфоломей ночь I just wanted to add that nuclear weapons are not what we usually think today. Due to a large number of reinforced concrete buildings, even nuclear weapons cannot do much harm to a big city. We have all seen pictures of Hiroshima, but it is never mentioned that this city was built from typical Japanese paper-wood buildings. At that time, countries possessed ridiculously low amounts of nuclear weapons, and the Red Army was battle-hardened.
      I very much doubt that after this war, someone could seriously think about an attack on the USSR. It is these events that have given our world so many years of tranquility.

    • @BRANDMAW
      @BRANDMAW 3 роки тому +1

      @варфоломей ночь Still, one must understand that the military headquarters has plans for all occasions. This is their job. And the fact that the United States had such a plan does not mean that there was at least some chance to implement it. I can only agree that the very fact of the Cold War can be saddening. But the fact is that the USSR declared the Cold War back in 1917 when it announced a course towards a world revolution. The USSR opposed the entire capitalist world. The Cold War is a natural reaction of the capitalist world to the new world order. In the same way, the Spanish Empire, as a representative of feudalism, drowned the world's first bourgeois revolution in blood in the 16th century, postponing the onset of capitalism in Europe for 150 years (War for the Netherlands, the so-called Religious Wars).

    You know Russia, there is a Greek prophecy that you will give Constantinople back to the Greeks and a Cross will stand on top of Haghia Sophia again. Then we Serbs have a prophecy that a Russian Tsar will visit Serbian Kosovo and Metohija when not a single Albanian will inhabit Serbian Kosovo. Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Crimea is the land of Russian Saint Vladimir the Great.

    Spassiba for this great documentary ! A leading French historian, Jacques Bainville, wrote a book ("Trois générations") analyzing the fatal path which led France from the Revolution and the Napoleonic myth to the tragedy of WW1. In the middle of the story stood the mystery of the Crimean war : "Why on Earth would France go to war against Russia ? Britain had good reasons for it (empires' strategy), but France had only bad reason to join Britain's and Turkey's cause.
    A small mistake at 20': The Catholic Church had been banned indeed during the French Revolution, yet after 1814 and the return of the Bourbons, it had almost completely regained its organization and influence. It was only threatened by the 1948 revolution, to which Nap.III put an end.

Dantes for years served the French emperor with lies and hatred words toward Russia and Russian people. He played a main role pushing the French emperor to join England and Turkey to fight with Russia

    These Star Media documentaries are so skewed to the Russian "way" of viewing things. This one makes it appear that Russia won the Crimean War. I watched all four parts and not once was the narrator able to simply admit Russian defeat in any one battle. Give me a break. There's a more realistic 3 part BBC Crimean War series on UA-cam.

    Ну если царь лох, то почему бы его и не кинуть; наполеона разгромили союзники при ватерлоу, а не при бородино, а в русской военной компании, французов победила погода, а не царская армия
