    If I need 5Vdc out, why should I use a smps (which requires a dc input) instead of using a 230:10 ratio transformer, which gives me 10Vac, rectify that, which leaves 8.5Vdc after the diodes, and then use a linear voltage regulator such as a 7805 to drop the last 3.5V, resulting in 5Vdc.

      Usually smps is more energy efficient. Lots of losses occur in transformer cores and usually the transformer needs to be of a decent size

      Well, it would be difficult to pack a 230:10 iron core transformer in your luggage so that you could charge your cellphone on the road. An Apple Cube SMPS has its uses.
