This is a really good video. Definitely going to try out these ideas. These licks and chord melodies can be applied to any key or musical genre once understood and practiced. Time to cook up some jazz-country metal jams.

Will definitely try and use techniques 4-6 in my next jam. Played with a drummer for about an hour today and realised my pentatonic and natural minor scale playing restricts my sounds to be super blusey. Love all the jazz ideas. Thanks dude!

Dear Samurai you're content is GREAT, thank you for that, this is just a suggestion: I was born and raised in S America, so Spanish is my native language and I learned music in my country, so once again this is only a suggestion but on the 5:08 mark you point out that notes are: Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do, but it is actually: Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si Do, because B is Si, so well there is that piece of information, I don't know if it is easy to repair or not but I felt it was handy info, my regards and keep rocking bro

I've seen a similar comment a number of times. In English speaking countries the 7th note in the major scale is Ti.

If your solos have fallen into the routine, and you can't seem to take an interest in it anymore. There are a few ways you can do to spice things up:
1- you can get sexy glam collant clothes
2- you can roleplay your solos as if you were a fireman or a police officer that had to play a solo during his work,
3- or you can try different toys, like special picks, Ebows, or even a real life violin bow. I've once heard of a guy on Anthony Kiedis Biography that would even use some kind of lube so that hos fingers would slide better.
4- You can try different ways of plucking the strings, like with your mouth
5- You can invite more instruments to the party, like those guitar players that take turns in playing with 4 necks guitars, and play at times 12 string, bass, etc.

well hi samurai. i've watched this video and i think this concerns mainly on the single or serveral licks. but sometimes i got such a problem that i feel the whole part solo of mine ist in lack of something structural and sounds quite disordered like a Chaos. i'm wondering how to make or should i have a structural design while i begin to play the first note of my solo or even before that or maybe after that. cause i can't now play quite a lot and good licks but doesn't sound pretty good integral... thx for checking it out!!!
One time I used a rockabilly lick in a green onions solo, and I'm still proud of it

There are 12 chromatic notes.
Zack Fraser yes there are 12, but the last one is just an octave of the root note of the scale, so it's kinda like the same thing (the frequency of the note is just doubled). 11 or 12, both are acceptable
Actually no, the 13th note is the octave. On a guitar this is a little confusing because you think of an octave as the 12th fret, but you need to keep in mind that you're counting from 0.

hi! i've ddescovered your series of videos just recently and i love them, you are pretty serious and you know how to explain yourself prefectly. but I have to make a constructive critic. those mistakes, when you miss the number "6" and instead you say "5", man you should record tat part again. I really think that make another like 7 seconds shot sayin the right word would seem a little bit more professional, in terms of editing and video cuality.
I put ths comment almost everywhere in youtube because no one seems to care about it and it just teems like they are not worried enough.

Not necessarily, as long as you are playing notes within the key of the song. If you dont know a whole lot of theory, staying in a particular key without running through a scale can be difficult though.
Or you can start on the 3rd or 5th note.
Ah oké I've been taught best to start on the root and end on it, maybe cause I just started they told me to start from somewhere.
I think that that is pretty bad advice. If you are still really new to soloing, I would recommend relying on your ear first and foremost and then start intellectualizing it later. If you are always thinking of starting and ending on the root you are developing bad habits early on.
+Nathan Poignonnec Everything you do will sound different. It's up to you to associate different practices with their sounds, and choose from them as you wish. I won't say hitting the root is necessarily bad, but it will be a borderline corny/square/uninteresting sound. But something that's what you want. So like I said, it's really up to you to know your stuff so you can knowledgeably pick your poisons.

@Tony Dinh Considering he's teaching, not just playing for your enjoyment, it matters. Everyone makes mistakes, but pretending it doesn't make a difference is just flat wrong.

Whoever introduced solfege to an english audience thought it would be better if all the different notes started with different letter. Changing Si to Ti. That's why in English speaking countries you will never hear anyone call it SI
