When I went to music school back in the Jurassic era that scale was called the "8-Tone Dominant Scale". I like how most these days just say Half-Whole, or Half-Whole Diminished scale. Makes it's clear exactly what they want.

Right! 8-tone=octatonic, so that makes total sense to me!

Great insight and explanation. This is a challenging topic to teach and you’ve come up with some useful methods for organizing the material, breaking it down, and for cool memory aids (as in thinking of the diminished circle symbol as a hole, for WH scale, etc.). Great work, thank you.

Just bought your book 5 minutes ago. The one on solo piano playing. Through hard work, sweat and tears, I hope to be as good as you..oh and with a lot of fasting and prayer too. lol

Great lesson! I found interesting your fingering. I use in all three scales only the first three fingers. But it is always good to practice different fingerings. I am not yet convinced that the fourth finger will work good on black tones (F# or Db left hand ) especially in these scales., but this is a good challenge to practice it. By the way I use your mirror lesson to practice this fingering with two hands, because two of three scales (with the fourth fingering) I can play in mirror. The third one is mirroring itself. Oh, man I would like to take two free years practicing all your lessons :)

Cool! He uses some in minor keys, but he’s not generally the first composer I think of with this scale.
