  • Recently I was given 5 film cameras, 3 did not work but two did. This video is about one of those cameras, how I got it working, out on location with it, developing the negatives using the semi-stand and the results I got from this 70 year old camera, enjoy.

You are a real master of the whole photographic process, Martin! From “building” the camera, taking the pictures, up to darkroom work and printing. I enjoy your videos a lot. Greetings from Germany!

I have the same camera and few other folders, what I used Uni acrylic paint marker for any cracks on bellows- acrylic paint is like liquid rubber and when dry I applied some shoe polishing liquid ( the one from the bottle with sponge tip) . Great photos Martin. I use my folder with makeshift xpan mask and 35mm film - so far so good.

Enjoyed that Martin. Must have been very satisfying to get the Penguin working again. Those old cameras have a soul, unlike the modern plastic things. Interesting to hear the WW2 history of the Tarn etc.

Thanks for this Martin, I've actually got two Kershaw Penguins, one of which was my mother's, which she probably had from new. I'll try and use these now.

Thanks a million (inflation you know) for the tip on Cerium Oxide power. I also collect elderly glass, including per WWI Cooke.
Many of my lenses need a bit of help with contrast. I'll give it a try on some of the off brand stuff.

Thanks for going through the process of fixing and using the camera from start to finish. I really liked the softness and rich mid-tones of the images. The creamy white of the swan was very nice.

Thank you Martin, this is very helpful, as I recently got a Soho Pilot, a basic bakelite 120 english folder and shares a lot of similarities in construction with this. I need to disassemble the rear element in order to adjust focus and clean it, and hopefully put a roll through it sometime!

    Hallo Martin,
    Matthias

Excellent video! Enjoyed the stories of your area. I just recently refurbished an Agfa Ansco folder that was gifted to my dad by a neighbor in the mid 60s. I used the camera a few times until the film was discontinued (616 film). I found some adapters to use 120 film and I should get six shots out of a roll. I think that I'll take it for a walk in a local cemetery tomorrow to try it out. Thanks for the inspiration 🤗

Hi Martin hope your better and recovered from your issues, nice to see and learn from your wonderful vlogs again, I wouldn’t profess to teach you to suck eggs, however I have many cameras over a hundred and some I have purchased after watching your UA-cam on, mostly folders but I have many other film as well as modern DSLRs and Mirrorless, also lenses again over a hundred.
I have used isopropyl on many that I have had issues with, Pentax Spotmatic, Canon, Minoltas and others and on some I have literally soaked the mechanism to remove gunge and sticky residue, but also on battery compartments on flash guns and other things, remote etc that have had battery’s left in, my latest success was a mirrorless Olympus E-M5 that I picked up for £60 as was advertised as on off switch not operating , or actioning, when you switched off it didn’t and the battery had to be disconnected so the chap had given up on it, a couple of sprays and actioning the on off and turning the mode dial and fixed.
Let me know if any success but even if the red Halina goes to charity, good for a kid to start.
    Regards DG

Hi Martin, Shanghai GP 3 is available in 620, FYI. The focus assembly reminds me on old slide projectors, some used the same principle. I'm typing this while I watch so there might be more. Thanks for another interesting video. Take care, Martin in Austria

    • @martinhensonphotography

Yes I think your right about the focus, I have used Shanghai film in 127 format, great results

      @Martin_Siegel Рік тому

@@martinhensonphotography Thanks for the reply. Shanghai do their GP3 in 120, 127, 220 and 620. They also do sheet film and 35mm (canister and bulk rolls). I need to run some 620 through my old Kodak and some 220 through whatever takes it.

Great stuff Martin. I'm going to try your semi-stand m/o of pre-soak, 30-45 seconds agitation, then 10 seconds each 10 minutes thereafter for 45 minutes.
I currently use a one hour semi-stand of 5 minute pre-soak, 10 seconds agitation, then three inversions at 30 minutes and water stop bath on the hour.
I've had a little bromide drag on 35mm (haven't developed any 120 yet) and your semi-stand m/o looks like it'll rule that out completely. Not tried Pyrocat HD - Fomadon R09 and Bellini HC-110 to date, so thanks again for the semi-stand variation.
Look forward to giving it a go.

I think you would like the Pontiac block metal 45 which is a French camera built out of a block of aluminum. I bought one back in 2015 for £16 and its a beautiful design and finish. The only thing that let's it down is the lens which was not the best. I too got a lovely grave stone image but my shots in the French sunshine revealed light leaks which ruined the other shots. Where did you get the black rubber paint from as I might try that as to replace the bellows using camera bellows in Birmingham would be too expensive. Another great video martin thanks for the stories. I lived by a moor side when I was young and on the Moors was a decoy factory to divert the Germans from bombing the factory called ROF chorley which was a one mile square bomb making factory. Concorde at the French airport looks like a pinned dragonfly staked on a large poll. Such a shame for a beautiful aircraft.. We have gone backwards with technology these days.. For testing the 35mm cameras I just point the camera at my house and go through the shutter speeds but any 120 format I just go out and hope for the best..I've got some of my best images using this method and if I like the camera I'll go out again with it. Just CLAing some mamiya sekor TLR lenses for a mamiya C3 I picked up. First time out with the 105mm produced some great pics now on my Instagram monoart69. I've picked up a 65 and 180mm to extend the range. These are prone to haze which the cleaner you used would get rid of.

I had a 6x9 camera given to me by my Mum in 1973. You'd think a 6x9 camera would offer great quality, but it didn't. I've scanned some of the first negs I took of buses and trains I took from 1973 / 74 and they are total crap.

I came up with a different workflow: Winding on *before* the shot, because folding out the front sucks at the film so that it might not lay flat. Winding on the film straightens it out. Might not have so much of an effect with this type of lens and apertures, but it makes a difference with better lenses near their open aperture setting.

Hi Martin, love the video so much so I went and bought one of those cameras. Can I ask please, when you touch up camera with black paint, do you use matt or gloss? Would it be like Airfix paint? Thank you.
