First time running a competition peg and raker saw. 4 cuts in 15.5" white pine.

  • first time using a competition peg and raker. this is a 6 ft Jim taylor 3 cutter "round raker" which I believe just means the rakers are swaged. I am super impressed with how well this thing cuts and how quickly it progresses in the kerf while cutting in some fresh-ish White pine. I'll have access to quite a bit more white pine and will have other opportunities to use the saw, but I don't want to dull it too much prior to competition time.
    Experiencing how the competition saw cuts has me hooked on getting better at the single buck discipline for sure.

    What are the specs for raker height and set? Do the leading and trailing rakers have any lead?

      Raker height is at (.021-.022) by feeler gauge and straight edge and appears equal with leading&trailing edge. I don't have my dial raker gauge set up yet so feeler is all I can offer. Cutter Set is .015 by my set dial gauge.

      @@Jzelenko27 That's hungry, though the weight of the saw adds to the downward advantage. A simonds 342 combination gauge with the swage pin removed fits a Federal A6Q dial gauge with some minor mods. Not sure how the gauge's shoes would fit the narrow gullets of your saw though. 0.015" is what I give all my flat ground saws.

      It is hungry, but I've heard some can go to .030 for a VERY hungry saw, but it is a white pine saw and will only be run in white pine or an equivalently soft wood. And .015 is what I've found to be pretty good on my flat ground saws as well .010-.012 seems to be pretty good on my taper/cresent ground saws so far. I'll have to look into the simonds 342 gauge set up, that sounds interesting. Otherwise, I have a dial gauge, and I was gonna set one up like Jim Thode did with angle iron.

    Man if you can pull the saw handle a little further past your chest and put your back leg a tad farther back as to force yourself to get a bit lower, you'd be tough to beat at a pro/am comp. Where do you live?

      Thank you! That's the hope, haha, and I tried incorporating both of these suggestions today when I was practicing and both helped quite a bit. Bringing my foot back helped in the bottom of the cut and i got a better push with bringing the saw back a bit more. I still have a ton to learn with sawing, but I'm really enjoying it. And I live in Central Minnesota currently.

    Keep the cookies at about an inch thick. Less chance of it breaking. Last cut went great because you stuck to the same angle.

      Kept my cookies thicker at about the 3/4 to 1 inch range today and that definitely helped. Still happened a time or 2, but I hung when it happened. So that probably contributed.
