  • In this follow up video/sequel to the 2015 video, Chibson vs. Gibson: A Comparison of Les Pauls, we compare a 2015 upgraded Chibson (with Seymour Duncan pickups) against a 1996 Gibson Les Paul Classic (with Wolfetone pickups) and a 1998 Gibson Les Paul Studio (with Gibson pickups).
The video presents a blind test into three different amps: a Clark Beaufort, a Fender Twin Reverb RI, and a Marshall JCM 2000 TSL. All amps were recorded with a Sennheiser e906 into a Zoom H5n. The Clark showcases clean rhythm tones; the Twin shows clean lead tones; and the Marshall shows dirty riffs and dirty leads.
All neck positions are explored with the tone and volume at 10 for all tests. All guitars were restrung with the same type of strings the day before.
After the blind examples, the truth is shows as to which guitar was which. Prior to the reveal, please comment as to which you thought was which.
The video ends with comments regarding the Chibson, three years later, after using it live for this time span.

In the Tweed replica, I like guitars 2 & 3. They sound brighter and stronger, maybe I prefer #2. More open sounding, stronger signal. On the Twin lead examples, I definitely prefer #2. Now I can really hear that Gibson woody tone in the midrange, and a tasteful amount of brightness. Both #1 & #3 sounded anemic by comparison, #3 sounded a little better. With the Marshall amp they sounded more similar, which is to be expected since tone and sustain are affected a lot with overdrive distortion. But #2 definitely was brighter and more even tonewise, although #3 was close. And actually all 3 guitars sounded pretty good. Whichever was the Chibson it obviously was helped immensely by the updated bridge and pickups. I have seen part 1 of this series.
Whoa! I am shocked to see the results. I thought #2 was the Classic and #1 was the Chibson. Amazing how much difference pickups, bridge and tuners make! Very cool video dude.

Monte Lang Thanks my friend! It goes to show that upgrades go a long way in affecting tone. Thanks for taking the time to detail your thoughts! Much appreciated!

I picked #2. It just sounded more open. The Gibson Les Paul sounded a little boxy to me. I thought #1 was the Les Paul Standard and # 3 was the studio. I have a couple Chibson's and like you I regularly play "shot and beer" bars and clubs and I use two of my Chibson LP's that I modified almost exactly like you (pickups, bridge, nut and tuners) all for a total of about $400-450 per guitar I am pleased with the results. I did the work myself along with a complete fret dress and I enjoyed doing it. If something happened to one of the Chibson's I wouldn't be happy by any means, but I won't cry too much either. It comes with the territory. I own a 1973 Gibson Les Paul that I have had since I bought it used in 1975. It stays home now. Nice video.

Rick Holly Thanks Rick! Nice to hear from someone who has had a similar experience and who totally knows where I am coming from. Interesting that you had the studio and classic reversed. Shows that boutique pickups are often over-rated. Great to hear about your ‘73 Les Paul! Cheers!

Here’s a question? How much more difficult would it be to put in the correct truss rod? I could have gotten it with a chibson now, but it increases 200$. Ho much more advanced is the old nut style?

I actually liked the sound of the Chibson more than the studio or the Classic.

Wow, I also picked #2. I thought is the Classic LP, it sounded more open and a great sustain. I was absolutely sure that #1 is the Studio. The real Classic sounded a little lower, probably Slash pickups did that confusion for me.
Anyway, great job and a very good sound for a China guitar. Probably not as much playeble as the other two in terms of easiness of playing.

kelemn francisc Thanks for your honest opinion! Funny how impressions change. All three guitars are easy players. Goes to show how pickups matter more than anything else!

    Thanks for the fun test.
I heard at once that the Classic is the 3rd one. Doubts were about 1st two... The common rule - chinese guitars get ALWAYS lost in the mix, it just has no that dense sound that american guitars have. Here we have no mix so I was doubting... Still the Studio is mostly close to the Chibson in that terms, it has very unbalanced sound - too bright bridge and too dark neck.

We all know Chibsons are bad news for obvious reasons. But looking at it from strictly a player perspective, and for the right person, they can be an great deal. This video demonstrates very well that a modified Chibson is capable of running toe to toe with a Gibson for a fraction of the cost. Only you can decide if it's right for you. Just remember no two guitars are the same and if you are not comfortable working on your gear you should probably look elsewhere.

Guitar 1 (studio) because it sounds the best, guitar 2 (chibson) less sustain & thin sound, guitar 3 LP standard, sounded brighter and a bit muddier than the studio.

No difference on dirty or clean to me. For the money I’d go chibson as a player. If I was a collector I’d go Gibson. 260 for chibson one piece body and neck 300 max up grades and then do your own fretjob-setup. 560 for a 95% 2000 dollar lp. I’d take that over a used studio any day as a player. I put the slash pickups in one of mine and some gfs classic alnico 2s with the Kwikplug wiring harness in another one I have. Slash pups are a little better but not much. I tried the gfs veh pups first and to be honest they’re not to good unless you play lead only. But the gfs classic alnico 2s are a lot better for the Gibson sound.

No hater here! I just bought 3 chibsons, all from different sellers. I plan to do an unboxing of when they come in. The first was a site unseen 92$ with case, delivered. Unbelievable, and that will be interesting. The other 2 are about 245$ no case, but free delivery. I don’t care about the headstock controversy, Gibson is insanely overpriced, screw em if China wants to compete. I don’t plan on selling them as Gibson. I will upgrade as necessary, and I might sell them as chibson, who knows.

whats wrong with me? totally, clearly i love #2. #3 is ... light colored. anyway, expensive pick ups working good on cheap chinese one. i guess pick up price higher than whole guitar price, isnt it?

The chinese gibson's may sound the same to an untrained ear. what they dont have nowhere is near the amount of sustain a real gibson , pick up has. Buy the cheap wood, put some good hardware on it and tell Gibson to shove their pricing where the sun doesn't shine.
