    Shannon - I have had countless projects at my home and although I usually feel confident, you have always provided reassurance to me in the process. I have tackled several projects just because of you. Your teaching is fantastic, informative and you always explain the things that worry me. Your shower surround video, specifically the drain adjustments, cutting, measuring, etc helped me today. Thank you!

    Much appreciated this informative video. I'm putting in a Maax three-piece shower, very similar, and using the same drain I think (BMI #01824). Your video cleared everything up for me!
    One tip I can add: for screwing in the top half of the drain, a short piece of 1x3 board (finished dimensions 3/4" x 2 1/2") locks in there perfectly.
    I'm going to follow the instruction, not put silicone sealant on the underside of flange of top piece, but will monitor closely, hopefully ok. I get the sense the top piece completely "funnels" into the bottom piece, within that underside gasket. I hope...

Would you recommend lining the floor/walls with a cement shower pan or cement board to prevent any leaks from any cracks that may occur? I'm trying to err on the side of caution for all scenarios. I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks so much

    • @HouseImprovements

      The grout is only needed to help support the floor of the shower and keep it from flexing. So really it depends on the shower you have purchased. Check the installation instructions that came with the unit.

    Shannon, GOOD video! Thank you.
    Just bought a Maax US36 and for the life of me, cannot locate their installation guide. Have a call into them but their website is difficult to navagate. Maybe because I’m in the US? :) Yours brought light to problem.
    There is a 1” +/- lip in the front, and funky plywood at the corners for plumbing & leveling, I got that thanks to your awesome video.
    In my opinion, there needs to be mortar under the floor foundation of the stall.
    Here’s the problem when the stall is plumb & level while dry fitting, when I installed the drain, it sits 3-4 degrees out of square with the stall. Is that normal or just a flaw.
    Hopefully I’ll get a quick response from Maax technical!

    Very informative. The only issue I saw was with gluing the drain on. You should always apply glue to the pipe and the fitting. Also, I am hoping that was glue and primer in one, otherwise that fitting will definitely leak someday. if you are not using a 2 in one (which I would never use myself) you must apply primer to the fitting/pipe and then apply the solvent (glue) to the pipe and then the fitting.

    • @johnjames77
      @johnjames77 10 місяців тому +1

      I would not worry about using primer on a non pressure ABS fitting.

    Shannon there is an easier to install, heavy duty, shower stall flange available, that is brass, (a little more pricey), but you can install is from the top, making it so much more easier to do....Oakley makes it, and it screws down from the top, compressing a large rubber seal onto the 2" pvc shower pipe that was roughed in. You still have to carefully figure/measure the height to cut off the 2" pvc pipe, like you did, but there is not gluing needed with this flange.

  • @cleo335i

    Hi,
    I had my rough plumbing done from the builder, so there is now a round hole in the concrete, about 8" in diameter, to install the p-trap. The concrete is 3" thick, and there is gravel underneath. My question is if I should fill the hole with concrete or just gravel is fine? If I do the gravel, it'd be easier if I need to replace the P-trap in the future, no?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  10 років тому

      Your P trap should be installed under the floor already, (it sounded like you thought you needed to install it still). Fill that hole with sand or gravel and cap it with 2-3 inches or concrete if needed to keep your shower base stable. Changing the P trap would be years down the road , if ever, so don't worry about that.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  10 років тому

      Usually a 8' hole posses no problem left unfilled, but check that your shower base will sit solidly without filling it.

    • @tonyg7729
      @tonyg7729 10 років тому

      HouseImprovements Thanks, your videos are very helpful. My base is 32x 60, so the hole does not seem to pose a problem if not filled with concrete. And I don't have the p-trap yet, just a horizontal 2" ABS pipe coming from under the concrete.
      I have two more questions:
      1. What type of screws should be used to screw the base flange to the wood? I was thinking number 8 panhead predrilled with 3/16? The instructions state to install the cement board just above the flange, and then cover the flange with the tile, so the screw shouldn't be an issue?
      2. How to secure the shims to the concrete? I mean, if I just put them on the concrete then put the showerbase on the top, they might get displaced eventually, no?
      Thank you!

    When I saw how little room you had for a mistake I was holding my breath. If the home owner ever purchased a new shower some day that was a little higher could the pipe be extended somehow? Could a dremel be used to cut the pipe? What if you bought a new shower that had the drain off by 5" from this drain? Is there a way to fix that situation?
    Thanks Shannon. I enjoy your videos.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  9 років тому +1

      In most cases you would need to change some plumbing in the floor to match to the drain location. A Dremel could be used with the proper cutting wheel.

    • @ds99
      @ds99 9 років тому

      Thanks Shannon. It's good to know that there are options. I'm currently trying to decide whether I should replace my bathroom shower with another fibreglass shower or build one from scratch using tiles. The problem with fibreglass is it turns yellow in time and starts to look horrible. The problem with tiles is they can stain easily if someone rinses hair dye from their hair.
